View Full Version : Joaquin Phoenix
Am I the only one who thinks he is just trying to pull a huge joke on everyone, ala Borat or Bruno?
I think we're all going to laugh our asses off when his "documentary" by Casey Affleck comes out.
Or has he seriously gone off the deep end?
Here's his rap performance from the weekend:

And here is where he falls off the stage:

Here's a video of him being interviewed.

Okay, yeah, after watching the first video as well as the interview....I'm kind of leaning in the direction of this being an elaborate joke. He was usually pretty well composed in older interviews when he, "was an actor," and here he just seems almost unintelligible. If you listen closely to some of the lyrics in that first video, he seems to be throwing lines from popular songs in there ("it's getting hot in here" for example). In the interview he said his music will "drop" around February 14th....is that of this year or next? Besides that, white boy definitely can't dance. If I'm wrong and he turns out to be dead serious, it'll be worth a laugh, but yeah I think I'm becoming convinced of his tomfoolery...

I HOPE it's a joke, like someone said, it's hard to believe his family and friends would just sit back while he throws his career (and sanity) away...unless his family and friends and just humoring him to keep him from going off the deep end. You've gotta wonder what happened there.

In the clips and amid rumours he intends to work with Sean Combs, Phoenix looks like a filthy hog; broad and bloated, his hair virtually obscuring his face; his ruined jeans exposing, repulsively, the tip of his penis. The rapping he performs consists of him yelling and smoking, then whistling energetically, then falling off the stage. It is ridiculous, not tragic, but vile – an attempt on his and Affleck's part to mock his credulous admirers and put one over on the kind of straight media Phoenix despises (when promoting Walk the Line, he would stop interviews to ask if an alien was growing out of his head, and so on). This behaviour may be intriguing as instances of performance art, in which the actor is expressing, covertly, his disdain for the star system, which is, arguably, a revolting tissue of lies and imposture.

You're a joke.
I knew it!
from Entertainment Weekly:
Following his widely panned three-song debut as a rapper at a Las Vegas nightclub on Jan. 16, two competing theories emerged: Either Phoenix is perpetrating an elaborate Andy Kaufman-style hoax (with an assist from his friend and brother-in-law Casey Affleck, who's ostensibly shooting a documentary about his career transition), or he's truly lost his marbles. The truth, it seems, is closer to the former. "He said, 'It's a put-on. I'm going to pretend to have a meltdown and change careers, and Casey is going to film it,'" says one source who recently worked with Phoenix.
Whatever his motivation or ultimate endgame, don't expect him to break character anytime soon. "It's an art project for him," says a source. "He's going full out. He probably has told his reps that he's quit acting. Joaquin is very smart. This is very conscious. He has a huge degree of control."
so awesome.

Found this too.
"Ok, so now that it's aired, let me say that to me as an audience member, it was clear to me that it was an act. During commercial breaks he and Dave would laugh and talk cordially, and when it was over he took his glasses off, turned and waved at the audience and chuckled and had a MUCH different demeanor. http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/05/06/casey-afflecks-mockumentary-starring-joaquin-phoenix-finished-shown-to-buyers/
Over a year ago, Joaquin Phoenix announced his retirement from acting, grew a magnificent beard, started rapping, and fell off a stage. In his few public appearances (including one on Letterman) Phoenix insisted that the move from actor to MC was a legit, honest career change.
But no one really believed it, and soon it was apparent that he was the subject of some odd film being made by his brother-in-law, Casey Affleck. Now the film is finished, or at least in presentable form, and has been screened for buyers.
