View Full Version : Inauguration Day Thread
Thought we should have this up for everyone to discuss the 44th President of the United States, and the Inauguration ceremonies taking place tomorrow.
Although I don't agree with all of Obama's proposed policies, I see this day as history in the making. The inauguration of a President of African decent. He has inspired Americans like nobody before him, and I definitely wish him all the best.
Discuss.
Who's going to be in D.C tomorrow for the event?

Really great idea for this thread. Surprised it wasn't created before. I was offered yesterday to go to DC, but I don't think it's worth it.

I was tempted as well. I'm not sure if I can handle D.C with 2 million more people in it. Plus, how close to the parade route, or the Capitol building could you get?
I found an awful hotel about 3 miles away from D.C for 480 a night.
On a cool note; when I was in D.C 3 months ago, I stayed at the same hotel Obama is staying at right across from the White House.
Pretty pumped to hear his speech!

Yeah that's why I don't really want to go. It will be more enjoyable to just watch in my home. His speech should be amazing.

I went downtown for the We Are One concert yesterday and it was awesome (you can see some pictures in my newest blog post).
Tuesday will be crazy, but I think it's going to be incredible. I'm not going to pass up the opportunity to see history, especially since I live about 20 minutes away from it on Metro (plus, they gave us the day off of school.)

I'm not sure why, but American politics is so much better than Canadian politics. I'm much more interested in American politics.

I think it's ridiculous the the first day of classes for a lot of colleges (including mine) is tomorrow. I think that election day and inauguration day should count as holidays.

I just think for a group of people that get trashed for not being interested in politics and never going out and voting, that colleges should really shut down to try and encourage people to pay more attention.

Its a different system, and it took me awhile to get the hang of your electoral system. But the American primaries and general election were my Super Bowl this year. And I guess the Canadian election was my Grey Cup. (Canadian Football League Championship. Which no one pays that much attention to, because its terrible)
American politics is just so much more relevant. What Americans do very much affects what we do. ie. Your bailout to the auto industry was announced, and we followed suit with a similar offer (based on the capacity of our economy).
Plus, I believe your foreign policy is much more relevant than ours, and much more interesting.

Election day as a holiday is a great idea. I think more states (and provinces in our case) should look at this and see if it has produced a better voter turnout.

I was just going to ask that. Are businesses and schools open in D.C tomorrow?
DC Public schools are closed, as well as many of the county schools in the DC Metro area (including Montgomery County, Maryland, where I live). Federal government offices in the DC Metro area are closed as well. As for businesses, I'm not sure. I'm assuming that due to road closures and the mass of people taking public transportation that day, that many businesses in DC are closed.
I just think for a group of people that get trashed for not being interested in politics and never going out and voting, that colleges should really shut down to try and encourage people to pay more attention.
exactly. it doesn't take much to get informed and form some sort of opinion. but for some reason people resent politics and government. That is one reason I love Obama. He has gotten so many more people engaged in politics and government. Its refreshing to see someone so inspirational to first-time voters.

That's because of us being the biggest power in the world for so long. Our decisions affect a whole lot of countries. I guess that's why more people pay attention to our politics than other countries.

Yeah, driving into DC is probably not the best idea. You could try driving down, parking your car at a Metro station, and taking the subway into the city. Unless you're in the city and staying in the city overnight, Metro's probably the best way to get there.

How this isn't already done is beyond me. I'd like to know who would vote against something like this.
That's because of us being the biggest power in the world for so long. Our decisions affect a whole lot of countries. I guess that's why more people pay attention to our politics than other countries.
I'm always really surprised finding out the foreign interest in our politics. It makes me reevaluate how important this country is.

Same here. Except I keeping thinking "President Barack Obama" and how cool that sounds.
I've never found Jimmy Carter's presidency as bad as the right likes to paint it.
His problem was he didn't act boldly enough in front of some pretty big problems. He's the reason why Democrats have the image of being weak. Obama already doesn't have that problem.
The real question is, if Obama has a Roosevelt/Reagan/Clinton-type presidency, how long until another white man is elected president?
Hahahaha.....it blows me away all of the comparisons to past presidents like Lincoln/Kennedy/Roosevelt and how accurate they are.
