Click here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/reviews.php?action=viewarticle&artid=217) to read a new review (http://www.absolutepunk.net/reviews.php?action=viewarticle&artid=217) of Emery (http://www.emerymusic.com/) - The Question. The sophomore album from Emery (http://www.emerymusic.com/) is out now on Tooth and Nail Records (http://www.toothandnail.com/).
I too am trying to write more concise reviews. What do you think? And how do you like the album?

I think that's about what I'd give it.
Good album, I might need to listen to it a bit more though.

Yet another well written review Garrett. Also, Emery's new album is something that needs to be purchased and not just downloaded. Do it, come on, do it.

Great review, I agree with you on almost all accounts. I'd give an 8 too. It's a very good album.

Another solid review buddy. I really enjoyed how you played with the name of the album throughout the review that was well done. I haven't heard this album as of yet, so i can't share my opinion on it, however i will be picking it up tomorrow.
Well done Garett.
Awesome review! I would have maybe scored it higher just b/c its one of my fav albums so far this year.

seriously...i'm not digging it that much. i listened to it in the car and the first 2 tracks are good, but it just kind of seems to run together after that...any rec's for getting in to it? maybe i will just keep listening. i did'nt really get ahold of the lyrics either...just more listening to the music...

the lyrics are amazing...check out tracks 3,4 and 6...if you are a fan at all i think you will be blown away. they actually have something to say, not just another seattle band.

After listening to the album like 5 times I am just blown away by 'In a Win, Win Situation'....its different and slower, but I think it might be my favorite track on the record. Seems as though they like to close out their albums with longer, slower, emotional tracks with this and 'The Secret.'

the lyrics to listening to freddie mercury are so good. it addresses them having to deal with being a christian band and how its not their job to force it down peoples throats and make them believe.

I really liked that song because it addressed a really interesting issue of their lives. My one question was, did anybody else think this album took a more "Christian moral" approach than The Weak's End did? I don't really know how to put it into words, but their Christianity seemed to come out more in this album. Not that it really changes the music at all, just something I thought I picked up on.

It definitely took a more Christian approach, in my opinion. Some of the parts sound really "churchy" if you know what I mean.

I cant recall what your older reviews were. But if you mean concise as in not a track by track breakdown I really like this way better. Good work.

i like this album, i need to listen more though...i actually disliked the lyrics quite a bit on the 1st couple of listens, but i think as a whole this album is a lot better than the weak's end, which i found very boring at times

Great review, amazing album. Personally I'd score it a 9/10.
For those of you who havent been able to initially get into this album, my recommendation is to continually listen to it over and over, and concentrate on the caliber of musicianship and lyrical expression displayed from each song. Much like The Weak's End (at least for me), it took quite a few listens through the record before I realized it was probably one of my favorite albums of this genre. Also, listen to the songs in their intended sequential order...not just individually on purevolume, it really makes a difference

about the more christian approach:
in between 4th and 2nd street just screams church hymn to me haha i dont know why.
oh and i was wondering... who else noticed that if you stick the song titles after the album title they form the actual "questions" of the cd. the the album title and song titles are really unique as they actually fit together. just wondering if anyone else noticed

etc.
Hes got the concept wrong......the QUESTION is the entire albums song listing.

Is Where Were You When I Was- written or sung anywhere? I can't seem to place it.
Also, where were you when I was The Terrible Secret?

holy shit i finally get it...you were right SLADE..
Where were you when i was..."So Cold i Could See My Breath"?
Where were you when i was..."Playing With Fire"?
Where were you when i was..."Returning The Smile You Have From The Start"?
Where were you when i was..."Studying Politics"?
Where were you when i was..."Left With Alibis and Lying Eyes"?
Where were you when i was..."Listening To Freddie Mercury"?
Where were you when i was..."The Weakest"?
Where were you when i was..."Miss Behavin'"?
Where were you when i was..."In Between 4th and 2nd Street"?
Where were you when i was..."The Terrible Secret"?
Where were you when i was..."In a Lose, Lose Situation"?
Where were you when i was..."In a Win, Win Situation"?
Emery definitely went out of their way to create an actaul work of art with a message that isn't overwhelmed by their beliefs and explains a contemporary debate of forcing religion on others because as Christians "it's not our job to MAKE anyone believe".
Best song on the album: "Listening to Freddie Mercury"
Best lyric on the album: "Your words cut when they are so cliche / So here's my knife because I came for the buffet" ("Studying Politics")

Where is the line "Where were you when I was?" And how does that make sense with The Terrible Secret
sputniksignals
08/03/05, 01:56 PM
the line is on the booklet not in the actual cd. so some of you who wanted the booklet all pretty and didnt want to break the seal are missing it. but anyways
where were you when i was the terrible secret?
it makes sense to me. people can be secrets. affairs perhaps. i dont know ask emery :-P everything else fits though and im sure theres some explanation for it

So what exactly is the message that Emery is trying to communicate with those questioning statements? The artwork looks like a guy sends the question to a girl and she sends it back to him. What does this all mean? We are all asking the same questions? Where does faith come into this? And what do questions like "Where were you when I was the terrible truth?' have to do with anything?

i am liking this stuff now. maybe not every song...bit i listened to freddie mercury again...lyrics are my favorite part of the new emery right now, and i really like this question stuff i had no idea it went so deep.
sputniksignals

im thinking that the questions arent addressed to the girl. being a christian band, im going on a limb to assume that the real person that the questions are being asked to is god. the whole faith in god plays in because they put their faith in god when they ask him the questions. the usual "why are we fighting?" "why did you let me get hurt", etc. i dunno but thats my take on it

Best lyric on the album: "Your words cut when they are so cliche / So here's my knife because I came for the buffet" ("Studying Politics")
Don't forget right before that, "We began with concluding remarks" too. Every time I listen, the album gets better

Furthermore... how does "Where WERE you when I WAS - So called I CAN see my breath?" make sense? The tenses don't even match up.

hey i dont know how old this thread is but i was wondering if anyone could give me some thoughts on something. on this new album theres one line where he says "if you cast the first stone, then throw them all" that seems slightly un-christian. maybe im interpreting it wrong. any thoughts?
