Behemoth – Ezkaton
Record Label: Metal Blade
Release Date: November 11, 2008
Who?
The legendary Polish death metal act Behemoth finally has made the jump to Metal Blade after trying out pretty much every other label that exists.
How is it?
If you’ve never heard Behemoth before, this could be a great way of introduction, as it obviously serves as a hypebuilder for the full-length that will be coming out later this year. But even if you have heard Behemoth before, and you would assume that one Behemoth song is every Behemoth song at this point after the ninth full length album, you might actually be surprised with this disc. First off, the EP starts horribly with “Chant for Ezkaton”, a throwaway thrash number that fails to capture the group’s power and fury, and instead just comes off incredibly cheesy. Skip it.
“Qadosh” luckily saves the day, more Nile than Nile, and more evil than…Nile. After that, two covers randomly show up, one by Master’s Hammer (who?) and the other, one of the worst Ramones songs ever made (“I’m Not Jesus”). Both fly by at crushing Behemoth tempos and you might as well forget they’re covers. The last three tracks are live versions. “From the Pagan Vastlands” and “Decade Ov Therion” slaughter while “Chant for Ezkaton” is just as lame as ever. Overall, you could save yourself the trouble and just download “Qadosh”, but if you’ve crazy about Behemoth then go ahead and buy the EP.
Also of Note:
1.) The disc comes with a sheet advertising three Behemoth ringtones. That would be a way to disrupt class indeed! It’s just incredibly difficult to imagine the meeting Behemoth held in which they decided this was a good idea.
2.) The band members’ names are Inferno, Orion, Nergal, and Seth. Holy crap! What a ridiculous name Seth is!
