View Full Version : Oh, Sleeper Call Out Inauguration Irony
Anton Djamoos

Oh, Sleeper (http://www.myspace.com/ohsleeper) are not happy (http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/9862/ohsleeperpissedbm4.jpg) with the money spent on the inauguration festivities.
It's pretty ironic to me, considering the current economic state of our nation that we elect a president who's main campaign was "fixing the economy", and then we spend $170,000,000 (170 million dollars) on today's inauguration.
I'm so glad that CHANGE has finally come to save the day......wait......

This band sounds just as ignorant as Forever the Sickest Kids. They're just bitter that their conservative ideas did not prevail on November 4th. Seriously, how much money out of their own pocket went towards the inauguration? Zero. This band should shut the fuck up and pursue eugenics.

Well lets see.. Most celebs who went paid anywhere from 25-50K that helped fuel today's festivities.. now, multiply that by God knows how many.. and we're close (okay, not TOO close, but we're getting there). Then, factor in private donations and companies lending some cash, and we have our 140 million.
So, a bill was just passed to put, what, 700 Billion into the economy and their crying over 140 million that has no factor on the given situation?
If you ask me, they're just dying for myspace hits today.
Theyre just pissed cause no one will spend money for them to put out another record.

Not to mention just as many people would have been upset if he had toned it down. In '77 when Carter was inaugurated he ran a toned down ceremony where he walked to the capital rather than drove since there was a gas shortage and he dressed down. The media torn him apart for not being "presidential."

Never a good idea for bands to be political. Oh wait, unless you are supporting Obama. That's really easy to do these days. They should have just kept thier mouths shut or at least understood where the money was coming from. But to instantly hate the band because they question Obama's cure for the economy is really typical for some Obama supporters. I voted for the guy and am completely estatic he is president, but there are some things about his presidency that I'm not looking forward to and none of them have to with him.

Really, do the research, find out who funded this, and find out where the money went.
It's not like Obama suddenly taxed every single American in order to fund this party, and it's not like the money just disappeared.

It doesn't matter who funded it in my mind. The fact that Americans raised money to throw a giant party is stupid. Someone could have spoken up and talked about how stupid this was and that the money could be used for something even more important.

01/20/09, 08:43 PM
Yes, because it would be better to have the ceremony be unsafe and unfriendly to the 2million people who came from not just across the country but from other countries as well. I'm sure that when hundreds of thousands of people were turned away and/or injured, it would make a lot more sense considering this was supposed to be a candidate for the people. That money was mostly spent on extra security measures and jumbotrons, so that all of the onlookers could be a part of history and not fear for their safety. Sometimes people don't think before they speak.

It's a lot of money, sure, but in the grand scheme, not really. The cost of the stimulus package working its way through Congress could pay for such a celebration every day for the next twelve years. And that may or may not be enough to revitalize the economy. The real challenge in improving the economic picture is to restore employment levels, which luckily, there are plans for. This celebration is fitting and appropriate and, in terms of "harming the economy," innocuous.

I know he just now took office, but I feel like a simple speech and the crowd going wild is most definitely enough. What I meant by it doesn't matter is that in my opinion, whether it was done by fund raisers, or Wal-Mart donated a ton of money or whatever -- that much money for this event just makes me scratch my head.

because the problem with our economy is people these days spend money they dont have. we are not at liberty to spend money in order to support our american economy. the majority of money spent supports asia. we are steadily losing money. the rich arent getting richer, everyone is losing money. we as a country have to save money, not spend it on bullshit jobs for an excessive party.

Seriously, fuck these dudes. They're just typical Republicans... money hungry without any concern for the poor. They're used to touring and recording by being funded by their Republican-rich parents. Makes me sick how level-headed musicians get shit on while the spoiled get ahead in life.
And I could say "Said like an idiotic Democrat."
Not concerned with the poor? What does that have to do with anything? Lucas was saying how stupid it is to pay $170 million for a party, and you somehow drew his feelings toward the poor from that?
Fairly certain that none of the members of Oh, Sleeper are living lives of the rich and famous.
And if they were money hungry, I'm pretty sure they would (1) stop talking about Christ from the stage because Jesus doesn't sell or (2) not be in a band.
In short, your response makes zero sense.
Everyone calling this band ignorant should realize that this was one member of it that posted the bulletin.
Agreed.
love how "accepting" we are of a black president and how "accepting" we are of homosexuals, but in EVERY single thread where a band is christian it is brought up negatively....how about we practice what we preach in ALL situations. if we aren't allowed to have homophobia, or racism - how about we don't discriminate based on religion either (regardless of how wrong this band is).
Agreed.

Doesn't mean everyone has to slander the entire band.
Agree. Unless the whole band feels the same way, this guy should've kept it to himself and posted it on his own myspace, it's simply going to lose them fans by posting it for their tens of thousands of myspace friends to see.
But I do enjoy this band, I saw them live last year with August Burns Red (or was it 07....) and they tore it up. So just because one of them posted some ignorant, unresearched rant on the band's myspace doesn't mean everyone has to tear them up for being Christian.

Technically, the money was put back into the economy.
Not "technically," it was put back into the economy, actually.
The money spent on the inaugural celebrations are supporting domestic jobs. All those parties ("balls") going on in DC are pumping money into the city through tourism, employing locals, purchasing goods & labor IN OUR COUNTRY.
Oh, Sleeper's argument sounds like it came straight out of the "No Spin Zone."

They single-handedly elected obama and worship him like god. Wait when he let's you down.
FACT- Obama WON'T solve all your problems
FACT- Bush is NOT as stupid as you idiots think he is. Do YOUR research. The economy was good under Clinton who had a CONSERVATIVE Congress. The economy only really began to tank when the LIBERALS took over congress in 2006.
If the economy is "fixed" he will only be fixing the problems that people like him caused (giving houses to people who can't afford them anyone?). Also, just so you "kids" know, the economy goes in cycles.
Oh Sleeper is an extremely talented band who have acccomplished far more than most of you ever will. They make incredible music with intelligent lyrics. Not only that, but they stand up for what they believe in and aren't affected by ignorant, unintelligible people like you. They know that your opinion doesn't matter. This thread = proof there is no objectivity when it comes to politics.
Saying the 170mil was put "into the economy" is technically true. However, democrats are always complaining that trickle-down economics don't work. Very little of that money was put into "the economy" in a way that will affect the American population. Security firms and tech rental?
The benefit of the big inaugural bash was a big boost to local business... but it was for one day. Putting that 170 mil toward health care or small business development would be much more beneficial to the "American people".
Whether this cash came from private citizens/corporations or not, it went to support the man, not the cause. Is the man greater than the cause? Shouldn't the cause come first?

I don't think you understand what Obama means to people. Yes he's not Christ and no, he's not MLK. But he is someone that gives me and millions of other people hope. Plus you say he hasn't done anything on the magnitude of MLK, Obama being elected president is something of a huge magnitude. He is the first African-American to be elected president, something that for a long time didn't even seem like a posibilty. Him being elected proved that our society is moving forward and to show that racism, while it still looms in our culture, is getting weaker and prejudice is being put aside in favor of supporting a man for his ideas. To be honest, what he's has acomplished is of the same magnitude of what MLK has acomplished, if not a little more.
As for the Christian bands, I don't mind them having ideas. However, I don't like it when a band will kick a member out of the group because they don't believe in the same ideas as Haste The Day and Mychildern Mybride did in the past year. To me, it's kinda hard to think of those guys as being Christian while there shunning people for not believing for what they believe in, which as I remember is exactly the opposite of what Christ would of done and that's my two cents on that.

i think the idea with Haste the Day and MYCHILDREN MYBRIDE is that their faith became more of an aspect of why they exist as a band. I think it would be equally awkward to be in a band that stands for something you don't believe. It's not hypocritical, it just doesn't make sense (I wouldn't be in the RNC if I had Democratic ideals).

Fact: No president can EVER solve all of America's problems. No president ever has.
Fact: Bush still will go down as a bad president due to a wide number of other things he did other than the economy.
Fact: If you want to blame anyone for the housing crisis, you have to blame two groups of people: The banks and lending companies who gave the loans to the people who couldn't afford to pay them back and the people themselves who bought the houses they couldn't afford. You really can't blame it on Obama or the Democrats, it's not their fault two parties made mistakes on both sides that led the economy to be what it is.
Fact: Trickle-down economics doesn't work as great as you think it does. All it really achieves is giving tax breaks to people who don't really need them (the rich) and widens the gap between the rich and the middle and lower class.
Plus to be honest, Oh, Sleeper really haven't achieved that much.

Shouldn't the cause come first?
very intelligent post. i agree with you strongly.

Once again, there is no "their". It was just one member making a bulletin.
And he has since posted a new one:
I just wanted to clarify that today's bulletin was not the opinion of Oh, Sleeper. It was my personal view and opinion and I shouldn't have posted my personal thoughts on the band's myspace. Very unprofessional on my part. And I apologize if anyone took offense to what I said. It has nothing to do with Oh, Sleeper....nor the music we make. I support our president and didn't mean to talk negatively about EITHER political party. I hope you guys all have a good night.

love how "accepting" we are of a black president and how "accepting" we are of homosexuals, but in EVERY single thread where a band is christian it is brought up negatively....how about we practice what we preach in ALL situations. if we aren't allowed to have homophobia, or racism - how about we don't discriminate based on religion either (regardless of how wrong this band is).

5. no. they suck

You asked for this.
Deregulation of the financial markets spanned both the Clinton and Bush administrations. After the creation of mortgage backed securities and collateralized mortgage obligations, financial institutions took advantage of these rising returns by buying up these instruments and virtually dismissing credit risk. Because the yields on MBSs skyrocketed, lenders started to get greedy and offered mortgages to borrowers that couldn't afford the terms. This risky debt, known commonly as a subprime mortgage, offered tremendous upside because of the risk associated with the investment. Thanks to creative stipulations on mortgage terms, inexperienced borrowers were offered lowered "teaser rates" on their loans or balloon payment options which allowed them to defer their debt or manage to afford the earlier loan payments. Eventually, defaults flooded the markets, losing MBSs their marketability. Since no one wanted to buy the securities, they lost all intrinsic value and were written down on the books of any company levered in them. This both destroys your investment banks and dramatically widens credit spreads, deterring any banks from lending. Without leveraging, all investments become extremely risky, save U.S. government backed treasury securities. Now that the financial sector/equity and debt markets are crumbling, the dollar is weakened (after Greenspan spent a few years obliterating fed rates), and outsourcing is continuing to hinder American economic growth, unemployment numbers blow up and discressionary spending is shot to hell. Without Americans feeding money into our huge trade deficits with other countries starts a chain reaction where foreign economies begin to feel our pain and suffer as well. This problem is further propagated by the media, which talks about the current recession like this is the first time our economy has fallen. Oh wait, the business cycle is...cyclical. There was a bad recession in the 1980s, now it's happening again, and years from now, it'll happen again. One can only hope, however, that Obama's socialized healthcare plan, economic stimulus package, and virtual recreation of FDR's "New Deal" will actually help the economy grow rather than exacerbate our nation's debt.
Is this a liberal vs. conservative problem? No, it's an issue of deregulation that both parties in the government foolishly ignored. It's a problem where a risk was poorly assessed on a new financial instrument. It's the ongoing issue of the U.S. importing more than we export while solely relying on the fact that foreign countries will never ask for returns on our Treasuries. And, most importantly, it's because of people like you that don't know what the hell is going on.

While I concur that their statement was probably slightly bland and a bit "ventive" I'd actually take it a step further with CHURCHES spending millions on renovations and upgrades while the homeless still seek shelter and people are still hungry.
And since we're into stereotyping, I'd actually say they're ahead of the curve. Not everyone is going to jump on the Obama bandwagon when he gets in office, unity and being apart of "the crowd" isn't trendy and the desire to be unique and "hip" or "original" is valued much higher then actual intelligence.
...after all, at one point in time our old president Bush had an approval rating of 90% at one point, before he decided to chase our attackers and the terrorists who slammed a few jets into our old trade centers. Then justice lost its "sexiness" and so-called "peace" took its place.

I disagree. It's for us to care, it's just not for us to support dictators and rebels (Hussein and the Taliban) in one decade when it suits us, then go after them the next decade. Both lead to our detriment. Caring is one thing, getting involved where you shouldn't is another.

It was perceived that Iraq was helping out the terrorist cause and had weapons of mass-destruction (ie: blogs/AP.net.)
I'm in agreement with most that we should get out of Iraq and let them self-destruct. It's not for us to care.
Sadly it will still be a long time untill we can get out. Truth is if we left tomorrow, the whole country would cave in and crumble. Look at Somalia for an example.

man your a riot, not once did I mention this band, and not once did you post anything worth reading. Shittier politics? I dont know what to say. For the sake of everyone, keep your minds open and dont absorb everything the media feeds you. George Bush got slammed for spending 40 mil dollars 4 yrs ago, thats fact. Any dollar the gov't spends is our money. I cant wait till the Bush bashing is over with. Its the biggest bandwagon ride if seen in my life.
He did? I don't remember seeing much slamming. I remember people throwing rotten food at his limo though.
Yup. Agreed. Opinions like mine are stupid. How dare I.
When your opinion is that "invading Iraq=chasing down 9/11 perpetrators", opinions like yours are COLOSSALLY stupid, and contribute to the dumbing down of the population.

I don't even know who this band is. After reading that though, I don't even want to know about them.So you have to agree with a band's politics before you give them a listen? Sounds like you are a real fan of music.

I don't believe mere perception should be sufficient burden of proof for war.
I suppose you're right. But what we now call "perception" was once called "fact." A majority of America at the time called our current "perceptions" facts. We now obviously know better.
...I'm not sayin, I'm just saying.

I knew that was post was coming. No, their political views have nothing to do with it. Their ignorant views, on the other hand, have everything to do with it. Anyone who has done enough research would know that this price tag is not unusual for inaugurations.

i've met lucas before and he seemed like a dick then too. i can't really say much that hasn't already been said before, but i figured oh, sleeper doesn't have much to offer with ryan gone.
i have met lucas, and all the guys in oh, sleeper, and to be honest they were all pretty cool. thats me though.

Agree with their politics, no. Be assured that they at least have a head on their shoulders...perhaps so.

This was kind of what I was getting at. I'm saying we shouldn't just "up and leave". Too many innocent people, like many have already, will be mortally effected.
Maybe my opinions arent so stupid? But again, this is AP.net, honest opinions are suspect.

Why not? Millions of different reasons go into a decision making process -- or judgment process -- of liking a band or their music. I don't see why their intelligence or political preference can't play a role. There are countless bands making music and at some point a decision to either listen or not listen is made ... what draws that line is different for each person. I see no problem with one of those reasons being political. And I am 100% fine with that going the other way.

i love lucas, solid dude, fun to hang out with, but that doesnt change the fact that his comment was very very very dumb.

seriously? you can all call me an idiot but i go to one of the best universities in the country, something most of you probably don't do. yeah the university of north carolina, a "public ivy" with around a 35% acceptance rate, among the top 25 lowest i think (easily the top 10 in public schools). the root of the problem is that you don't want to admit that you are wrong. i do respect the people giving reasons for their opinons though not the idiots who say "oh sleeper is retarded." i bet you are too

i understand what you are saying, but this inauguration is $130 million dollars more expensive than the last one. i think it is not so much the amount the people have a problem with, it is the symbolism of a country who is going into a dark and difficult economic time where hundreds of thousands of Americans are losing their jobs while the people in Washington live it up. i do not blame President Obama, he does not plan this stuff. I blame the ignorant people in Washington who do not realize the kind of message this is going to send. Like i said before, i think the people who have a problem with this are people who are looking more at the symbolism rather than the actual dollar amount.
for the record, i voted for President Obama. I just think that a celebration on this scale sends a bad message.

Haha I find it amusing because that band (or band member) did not even talk about their political views. They were just complaining about the price of the inauguration, which is what I consider dumb and what makes me not want to listen to their music. Their political views don't even have anything to do with it. I'm sure some bands I listen to aren't left-wing, and I am okay with that. But like you said, if I wasn't, then I'm not sure what the big deal would be? People don't listen to musicians/bands for different reasons.

1) It seems to me that the problem is not with the celebration or the price tag, but with the high cost in the context of the current recession. The blame, then, falls on the media, who are so disunified by party lines that each side will expose some inane or irrelevant "secret" as a means to "get ahead" both in the ratings game and in the political sphere. The American government does a rather sound job of keeping most budgetary information from the eyes of the average American, because the end figures don't change our day to day grind in the workforce. So why, then, did the American public need to know the cost of such an event? Because it propelled one political party, and their media supporters, over the other. Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss.
2) I personally have nothing against Obama, and I know that if he makes good on even half of his promises we as a nation will find ourselves in a better place in 4-8 years. However, any argument that he has made a great stride for Civil Rights in the same vein as MLK is a bit of a hyperbole, truth be told, since MLK was purporting the idea of color-blindness within society, while the election of Obama seems to sharply contrast this by making color one of the main issues of the campaign/election. Yes, this is a historic day. Yes, America has come a long way since slavery and segregation. But can we, possibly, look at the man as a messenger of the platform, as a beacon of the cause, rather than a symbol of color or a shift in the national perspective? Because when you actually start to look beneath all of the surface stuff- his race, his religious background, the puppy he bought for his daughters- is when you really understand that the Change (yes, capitalized) that he is promising is based on ideas, not on the distance between black and white.
3) I really don't think that this band member has ever taken an economics class, otherwise he'd realize that, despite the slow process of trickle-down economics, the money spent will still help to support the economy through income taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, and whatever else the workers at the inauguration decide to spend their money on, not to mention the fact that the money will instantly revive one of the most popular, yet still ailing, tourist cities in America, our nation's capital.

Anyone who has done enough research would know that this price tag is not unusual for inaugurations. As much everyone wants to call it ignorant, its not. The argument they have is pretty reasonable. That doesn't mean that they are correct in any way, but to say that questioning why 170,000,000 dollars was spent is ignorant is just the wrong word to use in my opinion.

I'm afraid I won't bother reading the rest of your post since you're absolutely wrong there.
However, buried in a recent New York Times article published one week (http://mediamatters.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com% 2F2009%2F01%2F06%2Fus%2Fpolitics%2F 06donors.html%3F_r%3D1%26pagewanted %3Dprint) before the controversy erupted over the cost of Obama's inauguration, the newspaper reported that in 2005, "the federal government and the District of Columbia spent a combined $115.5 million, most of it for security, the swearing-in ceremony, cleanup and for a holiday for federal workers" [emphasis added].
You read that correctly. The federal government spent $115 million dollars for the 2005 inauguration. Keep in mind, that $115 million price tag was separate from the money Bush backers bundled to put on the inauguration festivities. For that, they raised $42 million. So the bottom line for Bush's 2005 inauguration, including the cost of security? That's right, $157 million.
