I'm thinking I'm going to get one after about 5 years on a Squier Strat for obvious reasons.
I don't have enough for the Gibson so I was thinking it was the a good one in the price range. Thoughts?

get the standard, plus top, ultra, or custom, they are all fucking excellent guitars for the price range and they all do justice to the gibson if you cant afford it (although if you have the money by all means get the gibson). im pretty sure you'd be more than satisfied with any of those, i made a similar upgrade a couple years ago. however do not get the 100 or the special, those are beginner guitars and wouldnt be much of an upgrade from a squier strat.

For sure, I was looking at the plus top. Yea, i wish I had the money for the Gibson, but college just eats away at it haha.
What did u upgrade to?

The custom is freaking expensive now, went up 150 bucks. the Standard is best for it's money IMO.

Yea the custom and ultra are like 800 vs. 650 (plus) and 550(standard).
I just like the look of the plus better, and since I'm obviously going to be using the guitar for quite a while I'm willing to spend a little extra to have that nicer look.

I bought my custom before it went up in price (around $600ish?) and I love it. Even play it more often than my tele now.

Why not buy used? You could probably (Definitely) land a used Gibson in the $700 range.

It seems like the customs and standard plus are close to being the same with simply cosmetic differences? Am I seeing that right lol?

This is a great idea. Craigslist. Saw someone selling a Gibson Les Paul Studio in Ebony w/ hardcase for 600. I wish I had gotten it.

I have giftcards.... I don't mind going with the Epiphone. Just making sure its a solid guitar first.
I would just get an ibanez for about 350 you can get a nice ibanez with akkneck-thru body and duncan pick-ups

I've never been a huge fan of Ibanez. Not that the don't sound good, I just never liked the way they feel necessarily. Thats why i'm looking at the LP, I've just always liked the way they looked and the feel better.

Buy it, then swap the pickups for a set of burstbucker pro's. will sound deadly close to a Gibson LP standard

Yea I was thinking about eventually replacing at least the bridge pickups with something like those or dirty fingers.

I wouldn't recommend the Dirty Fingers... It's essentially a bad copy of the Seymour Duncan Invader. If you want that tone, you'll probably be better off with the original.

I dont know anything about the dirty fingers, but the burstbucker pro is my absolute favorite pickup.

Alright thanks. I'm not planning on changing the pickups for a while after I get it, but it's good to know in the long run. I would probably end up going with the Seymour Duncan or Burstbuckers for the bridge.
Get it in white. You'll get compliments every time. I have the white epi custom, and I constantly get compliments.
The other guitarist in my band has the standard, and it sounds good.
Warning: the guitar input will probably mess up on you eventually and get loose, but it's a quick fix.

Plus, that "akkneck-thru" body he mentioned, I've never heard very good things about them.

thats exactly what i did. i went from one of the most shitty strat knockoffs you could get (besides first act), it was a behringer starter pack (behringer doesnt even make guitars, lol) guitar. i went from that to an epiphone les paul and holy shit i still havent gotten over the shock haha. ive never had any first rate guitars, like a gibson les paul or an american telecaster, but in comparing the second rate ones i have (epi les paul plus top, fender MIM tele) while the telecaster is more versatile the les paul is definitely better quality and came with much better intonation and action right out of the box, hardly required any tweaking.
as for pickups, one guy said some will make it sound close to a gibson LP and thats pretty awesome, but the alnico ones it comes with arent bad at all, they'll be richer and will work with your amp a LOT better than your current guitar already. that said, you're gonna have to play with your amp settings and it might take some getting used to becuase the LP has a much thicker and more gainy sound than your strat, but once you get everything right you will never turn back to that old dusty thing haha.

damn thats a hell of a deal, but i always felt like i wanted any wear and tear on a guitar to be my own and come from my own fingers, cause any guitar i get is going to be very close to me and i wouldnt want one that was handled by someone else for years, haha that would just strip away the feel of "my guitar".

speaking of les pauls i notice that the studio is so much cheaper than the other gibson LPs. does its quality warrant the gibson name or would i be better off keeping the epiphone plus top?

I hear different things from different sides so I really couldn't say. People that own studio's will claim that the tone is better than the epi customs and vice versa. I'm pretty sure that a Gibson studio LP is the same thing as the higher end epiphone's except made in America, that's the only difference I can find anyway.

i wish they made gibsons or at least epiphone customs in the same transparent blue color i have my plus top in :( that's my favorite les paul color. with gold pickups and hardware it'd be so damn beautiful.

Yea that's the one I'm going to by, by far the best les paul color, gibson or epiphone, out there. In my opinion at least. If you really wanted the gold hardware you could just go out and upgrade your parts.

well i wanted a new guitar cause ive had this one since i just turned 15, and the resale value on this guitar is incredible, it used to be cheaper than it is now (i got mine for 499) and i can get something very close to that on ebay, in fact you never find them being sold for less than like 350 unless there's something wrong with them. i dont know im just about to finish my album and i feel like a brand new guitar would do me good, even if i go out and get the same exact model.
