The Homosexuals – The Love Guns?
Record Label: Serious Business
Release Date: November 11, 2008
Who?
That’s right: there’s seriously a band out there called The Homosexuals, and I’ll admit to having picked up the EP solely to hear how godawful these thirteen-year-olds must be. We have seriously run out of band names. Believe it or not, though, the group has existed in one form or another since the late 70’s (counting some long dormant periods). Love Guns? is pretty much their big comeback, even if one Bruno Wizard is the only original member. I guess when you’ve got a name as genius as The Homosexuals, you’re gonna stick around.
How is it?
I am surprised to say that it’s awesome. The last thing I expected to find on this EP was a jangly, college rock vibe, especially since there’s a pornographic scene on the cover. “Slow Guns” in particular brings to mind early R.E.M., but purposefully knocks its rhythm off balance during the chorus – perhaps to take a step away from the metronomial drum style of early indie. The rest of it gets pretty ridiculous. “Daddy Sent Johnny” is some kind of crazy noise freakout that Lou Reed would play if he worked at an indie record store and wanted to flex his cred. “Don’t Touch My Hair” doesn’t make any more sense, riding a computerized cowbell to the point that it sounds like the British equivalent to Ween.
There’s a lot of variety crammed into these four songs*, but without a doubt the best song is “Slow Guns” which, as luck would have it, is up on the MySpace right now! So go check that out.
Also of Note:
The Homosexuals will be playing SXSW this March and putting out another EP any day now, so keep an eye out.
