View Full Version : My Day At Warped Tour

So this was my first year going to Warped Tour and I figured I would type up a news post just to bring up a few points that really got my attention. Before all of that, I would like to thank Bryan from Thin Dark Line (http://www.purevolume.com/thindarkline) for getting my friend and I in, that was really nice of him and you guys need to check the band out. They will be out on tour quite soon. Here are a few things about my experience at Warped: I was at the main stage standing in the middle for Thrice's set and I don't know if it was just the D.C. crowd but the kids were incredibly rude, throwing CD's, watter bottles, and anything else they could get their hands on in all directions, I left after Thrice's set was over. I honestly don't see the thrill in this and have never witnessed anything like this, I've been to a lot of shows in the past too. Did this happen at your Warped, and how did you feel about it? Secondly, I'm not one to hate on the younger kids because that was me at one time, but I don't understand why they fight to get to the front and then as soon as a song comes on they start to cry and yell at people that are in their way. That really bothers me, if you can't take the crowd, stand to the side. It's live music, of course it is going to be a lot more intense then watching a music video. Thirdly, even though you think you are cute yelling at band members to take of their shirts and that you want to "make sweet love to them in their 4 million dollar bus" I'm a dude and I don't want to hear your sweaty fantasy's. But, those type of people are almost at every show. On a more positive note I really like how Warped trys to include everyone. They had a hip-hop tent and even though there weren't many fans I thought it was really cool how they were trying to bring in more forms of music. I also liked how they had tons of activity's so it is basically impossible to get bored. My highlight of the entire Warped Tour was being in front for Circa Survive and being able to sing with Anthony Green. He knows how to work the crowd and his involvment was awesome. Make sure you check them out. I really wanted to see Boys Night Out play and I'm sure they did a great job, but we decided to leave early. Please leave your responses in the reply's, I'm really curious to know how your Warped was.

i understand where you are coming from with the rudeness of the crowd. warped tour brings in people from all different aspects of life (dare i say, out of the 'scene')that dont know how to respect the band/audiance. especially with the popularity of this genre of music, warped tour's crowd's have been getting worse and worse, especially among the younger audiance. ill see if its even worse this year on friday...

edit: i think this will probably be the last year i go...but who knows

I wanted to go to this Warped Tour today, I've only been to 2 concerts in my life before. But of course I was too lazy to buy a ticket and regret not buying one because I did nothing at all today except complain that I wanted to be at Warped Tour seeing MCS and BNO and all the other bands.

yeah you'll get that at just about any warped. like the one i went to in florida, avenged sevenfold played and i was in that crowd, then right after them on the next main stage the starting line played and all the a7x fans booed tsl and yelled "you suck dick". it happens at all of them. and they throw water bottles and all that stuff. its part of the experience. and now that fuse and mtv show fall out boy and my chemical romance, you'll find the fans that yell stupid shit like that.

I saw circa right before they got on warped and it was such a good performance, except the rest of his band was somewhat boring. Especially the guitar player that looks like david spade.

and warped tour is basically a fat hang out for douches. After a couple of years of the flying overpriced water bottles and the middle fingers in the air you get used to it.

I went to the Indianapolis date on 7/20 and it was very good. I didn't have any rude crowds around me, so that was a plus. I started off the day with Saosin, which was badass. Later on, I saw The Junior Varsity who played a great set and really appreciated their crowd. They gained a new fan in me that day. After them, I saw Thrice, they played two new songs that shredded my face. After them, I saw MCS who was steller live, they played 4 old songs and 4 new ones. After that I saw Mae, Funeral For A Friend, and Relient K. To finish off the night, I saw Boys Night Out, who played songs from their EP, which was awesome. The last act I saw was Emery and they were the best act I saw all day. They came out wearing Hawaiian shirts and short khaki shorts. They had colorful cups with umbrellas in them. They were also wearing leis and visors. They then proceeded to play the best set. It was intense and amazing. This year's warped was way better than last year's warped.

My Warped was awesome, in S.F. It was also my first Warped and the crowd was really respectful from what I saw. There were some little teenyboppers, but you get those at pretty much every show. The only downside was that there were so many bands playing that I didn't get to see everyone I wanted to see.

DemolitionLover
08/10/05, 08:15 PM
I didn't see many bands on the main stage because there's just too many people. My favorites were probably Circa, TREOS, Reggie, and Bleed the Dream. Also I went to chipotle afterwards and got to eat with This Day & Age which was really cool, they're coming back in September so I can't wait.

Great day.

also a pet peeve of mine is the incredible amount of crowd surfing at warped at the main stages.

i'm sure this has been said before, but it gets ridiculous when you see people go over and over again. even during slower songs. i for one, am in the crowd to have a good time, not get kicked in the head.

ps: if you're 160 pounds+, do not fucking crowd surf.

08/10/05, 08:16 PM
warped tour is always like that. it is so rediculous down here, becuase it's just what you described + trailer trash + radio trash + rain during the 2nd or 3rd to last set every year.

p.s. i wish it was like a draft, where i could trade you atreyu and a7x for circa survive. if you want you can pick a romance band too. i think we had some to spare in florida.

my warped experience this year was a ok one.anyone from az knows the heat can get a little much but you get used to it.this was my fifth warped tour and my lest fav to date.i was just kinda out of it.haha word of advice dont go with your ex girl friend lol.i saw thrice, the bled, the starting line, hidden in plain view, the matches, amber pacific, some of silverstein, underoath,my american heart,a little of strike anywhere, and the all american rejects.

out of all i think hidden in plain view, underoath, and thrice impressed me the most.

holy shit, i hate girlslike this, i was watching Halifax at the cleveland date and i was front row singinig along when these two girls pushed in front of me and starting scremaing at me to jump and such and then screamed at halifax to take thier shirts off... luckily halifax told them no and were kinda disgusted by them, please girls, go for the music not the fucking "hot guys", if you come for the guys, do us a favor and stay at home and whack off or something, save it, cuz ppl wanna hear music

i went to the camden show last year and during some sets kids would be throwing empty bottles or full bottles....and some bottles wth piss in them..yes piss. it was terrible. instead of enjoying the band i was watching i had to constently look around to make sure there wasnt a gatorade bottled of lord knows what coming towards my face.

but really other then that everyone at warped tour come to see bands have fun and meet new people. cant wait for this fridays show.

HFStival is insane. We were up front (5 feet from the fence as seen below) for New York Dolls and Social Distortion and there were girls in sandals next to us and a guy tripping on acid/shrooms/something nuts who couldn't even stand up. HFStival is bad. But I still loved it.

Hey, just a quick question for anyone who may know...

I know it was posted here that Midtown dropped off the tour completely, but I had heard somewhere else that they were still going to be playing the last couple of dates...

I have a ticket for Englishtown, but I'm not sure if I'm going to go. If Midtown is playing then I definitely will be, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Motherfucker next to me that was on acid/shrooms/whatever who couldn't stand up had teeth missing, a beer in one hand, his shirt was ripped to shreds, and he was overweight. He was a stumbling, bumbling stereotype.

when you get so many kids in one place...you are bound to have the assholes among the one who are actually chill. it sucks. and the sound usually sucks too (not the bands, but the actual sound). Only reason I go is to see friends who may not be in the same spot all at once....or to see a few bands that i know wouldn't normally tour all together. otherwise, its a shitty show. bad sound, bad crowd, overpriced food. But, when you have the right mix of bands, the music has the potential to make up for all that.

and on that note, i am going to nyc warped tour on saturday. as bad as it might be, I still go...

Pat,

I went to the Minneapolis warped tour ... I totally agree with you on the point of people being rude. I have been to many shows as well, and no one was ever as rude and nearly every single person I came across at that concert. It was awful, everyone was throwing anything they could, and then there were so many people fighting with each other. And the young kids! OMG! What is wrong with parents allowing their Pre-teen daughters come to concert dressed like a whore? The sad thing is, most of these young girls I saw had their parents following them, holding all of their swag they got. I kept hearing young girls say "Buddy Nielsen is going to marry me!" "Pete is so cute, lyke OMG!!!!". I was appalled at the crowd. The youngest of the crowd members were complaining at everything ... I mean what did they expect at an outside all day concert?

It was my sister and I's first warped tour, and honestly I don't know if I will ever go to another one. I have never had a bad experience at a show before. I've always had fun, been in good crowds, and everyone looked out for everyone else. This concert was completely the opposite.

My highlight was meeting some really cool band members, like the lead singer for Monty. He was great ... and My American Heart's merch guy...I don't remember his name, but he was totally awesome.

There you have it ... that was my warped experience!

I didn't see many bands on the main stage because there's just too many people. My favorites were probably Circa, TREOS, Reggie, and Bleed the Dream. Also I went to chipotle afterwards and got to eat with This Day & Age which was really cool, they're coming back in September so I can't wait.

Despite the shitty crowds and the heat, today's Warped date was amazing. I didn't get to see some of the bands I would have liked *cough* TREOS *cough* but, I'm going to Montage Warped tomorrow, so I'll definitley be seeing their set then. My top three of today: Thrice, Circa, and Saosin. By far.

Top 3 performances of the day today at DC for me were Thrice, Circa Survive, and Saosin.

Fall Out Boy sounded like crap and muffled as usual.

The Starting Line sounded great with Andy from Hot Rod Circuit and Funeral For A Friend was stellar. The Kinison put on a really good performance as well.

I love the Vagrant tent with its $5 CDs!

My highlight was meeting some really cool band members, like the lead singer for Monty. He was great ... and My American Heart's merch guy...I don't remember his name, but he was totally awesome.

There you have it ... that was my warped experience!

Yeah it was so hard to see anyone ... at least where I was at.
yeah oh well.. like they said before im sure they will all continute to be the same.. i wish the bands would say something.

randalls island this week is supposedly sold out so everyone is panicking over tickets suddenly.

that place really is awful though. its always a dustbowl and people have to walk around with tshirts and stuff over there mouths to not inhale the dirt and then sometimes they'll spray water down to keep iut out of the air and it just gets to be a huge mess. not to mention its going to be in the 90s for it

there are a bunch of bands i wouldve liked to see play on warped tour this year but dealing with the heat, the crowd, all of it, just isn't worth it to me. i'll hopefully be able to see these bands play again elsewhere

Yeah, dude...I think it was like, six or seven years ago, but Eminem was on Warped Tour one year...

...about Warped trying to include other types of music, that is.

The same thing happened to Papa Roach the same year Green Day was headlining...they had already committed to the tour, then their album came out and they were bigger that your crazy aunt (I read something like that in the latest Alternative Press today...yep, stole it...). Anyway, they totally tore it up on stage and if it weren't for the fact that that was the only time I've ever seen Green Day live, they were probably the raddest band rocking that year.

I went to the Warped in Bozeman, MT...you know, the one where Matchbook Romance were accosted and held up from ruling all over the face of the Salt Lake date. But people were pretty cool during the shows, no really obnoxious behavior, aside from the rabid MCR and Simple Plan fans...the Offspring didn't even play our date!!!

Yea, I went and saw circa play at the beginning of July and they were amazing. Anthony Green is unbelievable.

Yea, I went to the Warped down here in Florida and it was pretty much the same. I got clobbered in the head with an Apple Pie while I was waiting for Senses Fail. That didn't make me happy. There was also a high heel flying around too, that would fucking knock someone out if they got hit. Who wears high heels to warped tour anyways?

Anyways, I'm glad you had fun Pat. I would have rather gone to the DC one with my friends, but... thats okay.

I went to this show too. I thought it was great. The only thing i didn't like about it was the set up of the stages. So far i find that St Louis has the best stage. Plus in the ampitheater you can smoke. Honestly if you are outside in a place like that let me smoke damnit!

First of all, what the hell happened to midtown/THE BLED? I was so dissapointed when I arrived there and foudn out they weren't playing. They were the band I was looking forward to the most.

Second, I don't know why but I just can't get into Circa Survive. I saw them today at warped and I've listened to the cd muliple times, but I just cant seem to get into them. I think it may be because I was expecting them to be as good as saosin, which were AMAZING tonight. Their new singer sounds almost like Anthony :) It made me happy to they're not ruining the old songs.

My #1 of the day was most definitely EMERY. I was so suprised at them. I have both their cds, but they just completly blew me away. Great stage presence, and great overall sound. LOVE IT.

As for warped tour, I hate all the little girls there solely to see fall out boy/wear flip flops and then get mad at yuo when you accidently step on their fragile feet. If you're going to whine at that shit dont wear fucking flipflops. I also get pretty pissed when those same girls crowdsurf. It ruins the actual show for everyone else. I mean, I want to actually watch the band rather than being pummeled by a person's foot in face.

That's about it.

I hate it in most aspects, but there are usually so many good bands, I just can't turn it down. I can pay $50 and see Sugarcult, New Found Glory and Green Day or pay $40 and see: Washington Social Club, The Stereophonics, Citizen Cope, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, Pepper, Unwritten Law, Sum 41, Gold Mind Squad, The Bravery, Louis XIV, They Might Be Giants, Interpol, Echo And The Bunnymen, Garbage, New York Dolls, Social Distortion, Good Charlotte, Billy Idol, Coldplay, Foo Fighters

Motherfucker next to me that was on acid/shrooms/whatever who couldn't stand up had teeth missing, a beer in one hand, his shirt was ripped to shreds, and he was overweight. He was a stumbling, bumbling stereotype.

Can anyone on this site spell 'ridiculous'? Maybe your parents should have shelled out a bit more money for private school. Clearly the system has failed a good many of you. As far as warped goes, I haven't been to it since 2002 for many of the reasons already mentioned. The chaotic atmosphere doesn't bode well for me. That, coupled with various objects flying at my head at all times, whether they be water bottles or fat chicks crowd surfing, kind of ruins the experience. So don't mind me, continue with your reminiscing and poor hold of the English language.

i fucking hate when people throw shoes....:shake:
me too! i had photo passes at one of the warpeds i went to this year and spent half my time dodging shoes that were flying at the stage and crowdsurfers (as opposed to taking photos). lame, definitely lame.

[edit] although, at all 3 warpeds i went to (especially san francisco) i found the crowds were MUCH more decent on the sidestages, they were usually very excited about the band (being from reno, i almost never see crowds singing along to bands that aren't on tv very much if at all) and nobody was throwing anything or yelling anything obscene.

and the one good thing about sacramento warped? due to it being 108 and very humid (every year, that is), people don't really want to get close to each other, which means less pushing/crowdsurfing/general annoying things that suck in the heat. yay.

i have to say while i can understand the appeal in crowdsurfing, it's really fucking annoying to the people below you. especially when you feel the need to crowdsurf seven times in ONE half hour set. i've seen security guards tell kids that they need to give other people a chance to crowdsurf, and that's ridiculous that someone would crowdsurf enough that they had to say that.

really? outside of pete saying the same thing EVERY time they play, i thought they were a good live band, they just need to mix it up a bit. their crowd is really annoying but if you can get past that they really know how to get people moving.

it's not so much that it's annoying to the crowd members, it's disrespectful to the bands (well, it is annoying to the crowd members, one should not have to endure bottles and shoes to watch a band they love). and it causes problems for the photographers, as i mentioned before.

It is not going to matter if you get a half inch closer to a band that you maybe know one song from. I wanted to see My Chemical Romance at the end of the night but couldn't because I couldn't breathe. And it's not like I was in the front row either. I was a good hundred and fifty feet back from the stage. And as i try to get out people are still pushing forward trying to get ever so much closer to their "favorite band". Why can't anyone just listen to the music and enjoy the show. That's why 95% of people go to concerts, to enjoy the music. Now I'm all for jumping up and down and going crazy but I'm not about to destroy somebody and pin them so that they spend a whole show with their left arm pinned against their back. I feel sorry for those 5% because most of the time they miss out on a great show. And as for the people who throw shit...grow up. I have too much respect for most of these artist to throw something at them. Most of the people who do this are probably in that 5% anyway, but have some respect. I love concerts and plan to keep going but there are people that will eventually ruin it for everybody else.

I went to VA Beach and DC. I saw Gratitude for the first time at VA Beach....holy shit, they are great live. MCS had a good crowd who sang along to every word. MXPX and Relient K were fun, as was Race the Sun. DC was flipping hot, especially when the sun was beating down on your back (i.e. at the Smartpunk stage). But I stuck it out and saw two amazing sets from This Day and Age and Acceptance. Words cannot describe how I feel about Acceptance. I'll be seeing them twice next week! Bleed the Dream was sick, I'd never seen them before. I saw the Dead 60's play and they weren't too bad, having never heard of them before. FOB, well let's just say I've heard them worse. Anyways, my highlight was definately Acceptance. In my opinion, there were too many "screamo" bands, but I guess that's the trend right now, so what can you say?

valient thorr (a band i never heard of, and i live in Chapel Hill where they are from. check them out, the dude is fucking crazy. he got the entire main stage crowd to crouch down while he told a story, then he wrenched his silk shirt and drank his own sweat.)

i was appalled to see saosin on a main stage. i know i will get bashed for saying that, since everyone here loves them, but how can you main stage without a full length out. not that i agree that valient thorr had a main stage, but MCS played a small stage and would have been a more worthy candidate.

Couldnt have said it better myself. People just need to respect the bands. I think it was mentioned earlier on this post that the a7x fans would boo the starting line when they came on. Seriously if you dont like the band then go find another band that you like and watch them. Thats why where are like 6 stages, theres something for everyone. So dont ruin the show for people who are fans of the band playing. We all pay around 30 bucks for the day, just let people enjoy it and get their money's worth. Im sure nobody would ever pay 30 bucks to have to dodge water bottles, and shoes all day and have to listen to a stupid little teenie bopper whine in your ear that its too hot and that her feet hurt. What happend to the days where shows were actually exciting to go to?

i didnt get to see the DC show, but i've been the last three years though and most of the kids there are idiots. half the kids that show up don't care about the music and would rather ruin the experience for the other kids. in the last three years i've had many water bottles thrown at my head...i suppose i'm used to all the assholes that show up to these events. but i truly regret not going this year 'cos i really wanted to see Saosin and Circa Survive...they're kinda my reason for living, lol.

i thought warped in bristow, va (or DC ro everyone in the venue) was pretty good, although not as good as last year. the worst part was the delay on the smartpunk stage. acceptance was supposed to play at 2:50 but ended up playing at 3:20 so i missed circa survive but i still got anthony, steve, and cliff to sign my program, they were really sweet.

i saw jeff from this day & age walking around and told him how excited my friends and i were to catch their set. mae at 1 was good, that was the most excited i've ever seen them during a set. i saw paramore at 1:30. anthony green was in their crowd for three songs. they played well although i could've done out with their screams, doesn't fit real well. this day & age was next and they had my favorite set of the day. great energy. acceptance followed TD&A on the smartpunk stage and they performed very well. j. vena hit some crazy notes. i caught motion city after acceptance, they were ok and played a lot of older songs (closing with throwdown) but they played some new ones that just don't do anything for me (LGFUAD etc). i missed the majority of mxpx's set which bummed me out but they sounded good from what i heard. i got the live get up kids disc for 5 bucks and then went to see FOB since everyone i went with wanted to check them out. they could've done better, i wish patrick would dictate, he has a good voice but sometimes you can't understand what he's saying. good day overall but the bottle throwing was ridiculous. it look like some got filled with rocks and other bad stuff.

i went to the Portland warp tour and for the bands i watched people were respecting them. Although the whole people complaining after fighting their way up front is stupid. Exactly if you don't like it PLEASE stand off to the side. Especially during MCR the whole middle of the crowd fell over right by me (i was about 3 people back from the barracade) and Gerard had to stop the set just so people can get back over because it was full of little girls and kids who were throwing fists. Other than that all the bands i watched went off with a bang and Thrice had the greatest reaction ending the night.

Actually, Acceptance's time was correct. It said it on the blow up sign and the whiteboard by the smartpunk stage. The Samsung text messages to my cell phone was cool, but all the times were an hour off. Maybe they should work on that for next year because I think it's a good idea. Also, the 45 minute delay in opening gates at DC sucked, but I think that was a venue problem.

I've been to warped the past 3 years in camden NJ, and I would like to just share a small story from last yrs, that sums up a lot of what warped tour is becoming/is. I had my way up to the front of the main stage in a band's previous set (I cant remember who it was at this point). It was around 2 in the afternoon, the sun was high, it was hot, and the Ataris we're about to take the stage. At this point I had lost my friends, and found myself next to a girl about 14, or 15 wearing pink sandles, and a pink shirt. She stood quielty, eager to see Chris, and probably was a huge fan of the Ataris latest cd, and the song, In this Diary. She matched very nicely for a friday night, but at this spot at warped tour, it was clearly no place for her, I mean sandles, in the front of the crowd? NEVER EVER. Anyways, so out came the Ataris, opening with So Long Astoria, and all hell breaks lose. The crowd then opens up front, and I look to my left, and their is the pink shirt and sandles out on the ground, eyes straight up in the air. I'll never forget the sight. She clearly had passed out from the heat, and choatic mess at this point. She rushed quickly out of the crowd, and given the proper assitance. Anyways, point is people need to understand what they are goin into when they go to warped.

Eat something
Drink Water
Go with Friends
Deal with the crowd and people
If you can't handle it, stay to the side
Most importantly, go for the music

Pat this was my first year NOT going to Warped Tour hahaha

The throwing shit thing happened last year as we were waiting for Bad Religion in Dallas last year. It was fun though, everyone was just bored while some other band was playing on the other stage.

I figured Warped would probably have the worst crowd ever this year, so I just stayed at work instead.

Actually, Acceptance's time was correct. It said it on the blow up sign and the whiteboard by the smartpunk stage. The Samsung text messages to my cell phone was cool, but all the times were an hour off. Maybe they should work on that for next year because I think it's a good idea. Also, the 45 minute delay in opening gates at DC sucked, but I think that was a venue problem.

you sure? you could be right but i know this day & age was supposed to start at 2:30 (i know they had a delay in setting up), so i'm puzzled as to why acceptance would start 50 minutes after their (TD&A) set had started

at all three i went to the times on my phone were right, but at the first one i went to the times on the smartpunk stage were an hour off on the blowup thing (expecting to see armor for sleep and emery coming out in astronaut costumes = startling) for half the day, they fixed them around 2pm.

while the warped tour in pompamo was good, it had it's fair share of disappointments.

-emery was not there for all flordia dates. (my luck)

-amber pacific did not play

-no my american heart shirts

-nasty thunderstorm(florida, the sunshine state) causing me to leave early and miss thrice

-the fact that florida gets pretty much the end of the tour meaning all the amazing bands drop off like (strike anywhere, tsunami bomb, underoath, gym class heroes, roses are red, armor for sleep, a wilhelm scream...do i need to name more?)

Yeah, because TDAA had 30 minutes to play, then 20 for Acceptance to set up, which turned out to be about 25.
