I scream a lot in my band, well, all i do is scream, no singing, so i'm looking for some good vocal distortion. not that my scream sucks enough to try and hide it, i just really like distorted screaming. i've been running my mic through a shitty yamaha effects box from ages ago, its so worn out i don't even know what model or anything it is. but i use the "Ring distortion" minus the reverb and it sounds alright. but! i don't really like how it sounds. anybody have any suggestions on good scream distortion?

get as close to the mic as possible, and scream as loud as you can. thats how i do it. best possible distortion. cup the mic, as well.

thats not really what i'm going for. i would like the screams to obviously have some distortion that can't be made with my mouth, my hands are busy by the way so i can't cup any mics.

When you sing too loudly, you can clip the mic. That means the signal is coming in too strong and cuts across the frequency distorting it.
This is the way a lot of vocalists doing it, but it can run the risk of sounding horrible live.
I suggest you don't need any heavy distortion just a moderate amount of crunch. Perhaps a Boss DS1 would fill the deal for you. You really just need to borrow pedals and see what works out.

even if you just scream, you should learn to sing properly, you'll have much more control over your breathing, which in turn will give you more control over your dynamics, allowing you to distort a mic more easily.

In my opinion, there is no "right" way to have a good distortion in your songs. I suggest tring out different things, and if it sounds good to you, use it. Boss distortion pedals are a good start. DS-1 SD-1 but in reality, a little goes a long way when you record...
