Keyboard/synth compatibility

What should I look for in a Synth/keyboard to make sure it's compatible with computer programs, such as; Ableton Live, Reason, Cubase, and such? I need a synth/keyboard badly!!

Also if you have a synth/keyboard what program do you use to dabble or play on?
