I want to create a mix for my friend who thinks that bands such as My Chemical Romance are emo. I'd like to give him a lesson in true emo, so I was wondering what you guys would think are some good songs/bands to include on it. I've got some stuff in mind but I'd like to hear other people's suggestions.

Says the one with the new TBS album as one of your favorite albums. To be fair, he didn't say TBS are emo, just asking for some advice.

As for the emo, www.fourfa.com (http://www.fourfa.com) has a list of bands i think that would be classified as "true emo", check that out i guess. The "what is and what isn't emo?" argument is tres old so i hope this thread doesn't turn into that.

True, I guess you're right. I'm sorry. I got upset and in the heat of the moment I said some things I didn't mean. Can we just forget the past?

Can we just forget the past? We've all got a bit over-excited today, perhaps its best for everyone if you just calm down, go for a little sleep and wake up and we'll forget this ever happened.

Good people in that band right there.

That said if you want advice as to what to put on the mix tape start here:

Indian Summer
Hoover
Rites of Spring
Fugazi
early Jawbreaker
early Hot Water Music

From there you can either go with the indie rock-emo mix stuff like Sunny Day Real Estate and Christie Front Drive or you can go with more hardcore emo like Angel Hair, Orchid, and Heroin. You could even go with the early poppy stuff like Saves the Day or the Get Up Kids.

burn him a cd consisiting of

Lifetime
Jimmy Eat World
Texas Is The Reason
The Promise Ring
Screeching Weasel
Mineral
Braid
Hey Mercedes
Rites Of Spring
Sunny Day Real Estate
Jets To Brazil

and Jawbreaker, and he'll be set. now all of those bands may not be "emo", but they all set the foundation for today's "emo", and are all great bands in their own regard.

Jess7286
08/16/05, 12:21 PM
Most of those bands you listed are post-emo, which is cool. At least you didn't say TAKING BACK SUNDAY!

To add to your list I would suggest Cursive, Breaking Pangaea, At The Drive-In, and Postal Service. Maybe even Get Up Kids.

GoodCoreRecords

Not to mention, save for Rites of Spring, most of those bands came AFTER the foundation was laid for emo.

Yes, but he did say they are foundation for TODAY'S emo. I thought it was a really good list, since the kid who we are making the cd for, he probably listens to alot of current "emo" bands. He will relate more with those bands.

Although to give him a true taste of emo, use something that Still_Life or even yourself, Good Core, recommended.

or perhaps, double disc.
Disc one, foundation of emo
Disc two, post emo which influenced today's emo.

I thought the point of this was the exact opposite of that, to show the kid that bands like MCR aren't emo. Today's emo would be bands that are actually still emo, and influenced by the old stuff. Like The Pine is influenced by Evergreen, City Of Caterpillar had a Maximillian Colby thing going on. End Of A Year is very influenced by Rites Of Spring/Embrace. That sort of thing.

I think that's why a double disc is a good idea.
First disc shows him what has influenced his "emo" bands like Dashboard and TBS or whatever. Bands on that disc would be the newer post emo stuff. Braid/Hey Mercedes, Get Up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate. He could hear the enfluence on bands he knows.
Then he pops in disc two, and hears the bands that influenced disc one.

Just an idea.
