ive been playing guitar for over one year now and i recently quit my band because i wanted to actually learn how to play more than three chord pop songs. but to the point what are some scales that a beginer(SP) like me try to learn first.

the formula for the major scale is WWHWWWH

for example, the Bb Major scale on guitar would be this:

e------------------------------------
B------------------------------------
G------------------------------------
D------------------5--7--8----------
A--------5--6--8--------------------
E--6--8------------------------------

natural minor (aka Aeolian) is the major scale with a flat 3, 6, and 7.
Bb Nat min would be:

e------------------------------------
B------------------------------------
G------------------------------------
D-----------------------6--8--------
A-------------6--8--9---------------
E--6--8--9--------------------------

harmonic minor is the natural minor scale, only with a major 7 instead of a flat 7
and for Bb harmonic minor, rather than Ab as the 7th note in the scale, it would be a B natural

e------------------------------------
B------------------------------------
G------------------------------------
D-----------------------7--8--------
A-------------6--8--9---------------
E--6--8--9--------------------------

get a cheap scale book or music theory book for about 10 bucks. First learn the Penatonic Scale and then move on to the Major Scale and its various modes.

I just finished studying some guitar classes at Berklee and i learned a whole lot. Very helpful.
