I'm going to be singing and playing bass in a band but It's hard for me concentrate on having the bass line right and doing the vocals good at the same time.

any tips?

Just follow the rhythm?

What's harder is playing lead guitar and screaming.

You need to have on of them down good enough to where you can do it subconciously. Most often it would be the bassline/guitar riffs/drum beat. When I play along to songs (I am a drummer), I also try to do back up vocals too. I find I stay in time a bit better if I am singing too. It all clicks together. But once I get to a fill, either I mess up lyrics or mess up the fill. This goes back to being able to play whatever you have to sing over by memory without thinking. Hope I helped out.

Learn the bassline until you can play it with your ass. Well at least with no effort at all.

Then slowly put the vocals to it, slow it down to half tempo.

Build it up slowly.

Practice.

yeah, practice a lot. I sing lead vocals and play lead guitar and found it very difficult at first. But practicing every chance you get will help.

Good luck.

I read that Les Claypool (Primus) recommends that you practice the bassline while watching TV, so that you learn to do it without concentrating.

Also, learn the two parts perfectly seperately, then bring them together.

my buddy learned how to play bass watching les. no musical training at all before that, and he just picked it up, watched les and became the sickest bass player i've ever seen.

Yes, I know that I have to practice. I just thought maybe some people would have tips on making it easier.

Its hard to sing and play bass, because your singing the guitar part (the melody) and playing the bass part, so one guy is playing/singing 2 parts of the song, its hard to do.

You know..I hate the fact that I have a horrible singing voice, but I can sing and play
along quite well now. :(
