After Sept. 11, the government closed access to the crown along with the rest of the Statue and Liberty Island as a security measure. Visitors to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/topics?topic=Statue+of+Liberty) will once again be able to climb the 354 steps from the base of the Statue of Liberty to the iconic crown that overlooks New York Harbor (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/topics?topic=New+York+Harbor) -- but not quite yet.

It would be awesome, I think I went went in the summer of 01', because last time I went to the statue, the only reason I couldn't go to the top was because you had to be on one of the first ferries over.

Go Obama! There are other things he should be focusing on that are more important, but still. When I get to finally go to NYC, I will appreciate this. :-d

and you can interchange "he" with "we" as well. and that works for a couple of the things he has done thus far.

We've already been talking about opening it back up forever, after we realized that no one intended on blowing up the Statue of Liberty.
The crown is pretty cool... but climbing that staircase was one of the scariest experiences in my life and I'm not sure anyone could pay me to do it again.

I don't think spending 10 seconds telling his staff the reopen the Statue of Liberty's head is really that big of a distraction.
Some people think it is, apparently.

If George Bush had re-opened the Statue of Liberty, would we have made a thread about it? Probably not.
Do you guys think we're getting a little too carried away with what Obama is doing?
Care to show me who is claiming he's the best president of all time for doing this?
I was being sarcastic when I said "best president ever", and all I'm saying is I think we're blowing some of the things he is doing out of proportion.

How so? To me it seems like people are just excited.

It's 10 seconds that could be used to figure out what to do about our economy. My copy and paste isn't working right now, but are we overreacting about Obama's every move? Yes, and we have since he first started campaigning. But it's because we're all excited.

About which part.

I'm excited too!! Very excited. I think he's going to inspire millions of people to do great things for America, and I'm really excited for him to come to Canada, to see how his relationship with the Prime Minister progresses. Excited to see how he is going to end the war in Iraq, and excited to see the result of that country and what they can do for the Middle East. I'm excited to see him resolve the economy, but most of all, I am excited to see him take his "bipartisan" stance, and "restore politics in Washington".
Now opening the Statue of Liberty, I wouldn't really say "excites me". I think people are getting too excited, and setting Obama standards which he'll never be able to reach.
Thats just my opinion. If you want to continue to be excited about everything he touches, carry on.

Are you sure about that? Because you and some others seem to have a problem with this.

I hope Obama spends every waking second thinking about how to fix the economy otherwise he is just wasting time.

I wasn't really kidding about it. Our economy is in shambles. My loved ones left and right are getting laid off and the ones that have jobs are still struggling. Decreasing spending on Iraq (or eliminating that expense altogether) and creating jobs should be what a good majority of his time should be focused on. There are about 938204 things that should come before deciding to open up the crown. I also doubt any presidential decision is made in 10 seconds. But like I said, it's cool he opened it, and so far I am really excited about what all Obama is going to accomplish in his first 100 days and in his entire term. So far so good.

It may not have been decided in 10 seconds of real time, but Obama realistically could only need to spend 10 seconds on the subject. Tell somebody to look into and hear a report back later on and make a decision from there.

I suppose so, yes. I just think it's a silly thing for anyone to be 'looking into' when if asked the majority of Americans would want his Admin looking into other things. That's all.

Obama would not have solved the economy if he had used those 10 seconds on it. It's better to get things done (no matter how small they might be) while working on the economy than do nothing but work on it. It gives off the impression that you're doing stuff.

I see your point and my point is lost, but that's okay.

I realize Obama deals with multiple things at once, my only point is there are a lot of important things he could be doing simultaneously rather than opening the Statue of Liberty. It was just an observation. I've said a million times in this thread it's nice he opened it.
Who knows when he thought about this? There was a 3 month period after he won the election where he wasn't President. Heck, he could've thought about it while he was still just a candidate.

Not to mention a 7+ year period before he was President when the crown was closed. I doubt he was brainstorming about this in the Oval Office with his top advisers.
