game saves, mp3's i think...no clue...maybe downloadable content from the internet
the Xbox says something about 50,000+ blocks remaining... Ive never seen mine say anything other than that.
I'd prefer wireless controllers, but if im not going to spend an extra hundred bucks for a bunch of other stuff i wont need

I'm pretty sure if you get the hard drive you'll thank yourself later because then you wont have to fuck around with memory cards that I'm guessing will cost an arm and a leg. The $399 version is really a deal when you look at what you get. A 20 GB Hard drive alone would be the extra hundred bucks, and then if you decided later you want a wireless controller thats another $50. Really, I can't see myself going for anything but the higher version.
according to the accessory list the hard drive seperately is $99.99 and wireless controllers are $49.99. so it seems it is worth it

the bare bones version should come with some sort of a hard drive, from what i hear they're supposed to be removable so why can't i upgrade to 20g when i need that much memory?
i have a dvd player, don't NEED wireless controllers, don't have a broadband connection so the headset is useless to me, and i don't have a hdtv, so besides the hard drive i could care less about everything else in the $400 dollar package...........i think i'll stick with regular "old" xbox (that came with a drive for $299) for a couple more years and save my broke ass a couple hundred bucks thank you very much.

What I don't get is why they still need to sell memory cards. If you use up that much space for video games you have too much time on your hands.

some food for thought....Down the road, probably starting in Nov, the dvd industry is gonna split into 2 pretty much for High Definition, Blu - Ray dvd (which is Sony and Disney) and HD-DVD (pretty much everyone else). So those of you that use your gaming system as a dvd player also should probably take this into account. Sony ofcourse is going to put out Blu-Ray on their machine, as far as its known now Blu-Ray will not be compatible w/ regular DVD's, so unless you have a dvd player also you're gonna need to get one if you plan on relying on PS3 for your dvd player. On the other hand the other technology for HD-DVD uses a red laser which infact will be compatable w/ older dvd's. The battle between the Blu-Ray / HD-DVD is looking to shape up as Beta Vs VHS all over again. HD-DVD seems to have an upperhand in this instance because they are backwards compatable, as far as its known right now. It is possible that Blu-Ray will be backwards compatable if someone knows if it is please post it. But those of you that rely on a gaming system as a dvd player also should think about this when taking in account of which system to buy. Now you might be thinking, oh well i can pick up a dvd player up at a walmart for $30 bucks but these HD DVD players are going to be pretty expensive in the beginning so the advantage of having the gaming system/dvd player is a good investment. I don't look for Blu-Ray to win this one unless it is known that they are able to be backwards compatable.

Blu-ray Disc: PlayStation 3 BD-ROM, BD-Video, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
Also, This news article explains who is with Blu-Ray and who isn't:
Blu-ray wins two more backers, while HD DVD looks doomed (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050817-5218.html)
8/17/2005 6:25:35 PM, by Ken "Caesar" Fisher (http://arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/bios/caesar.html)
Late last week the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) pulled an Ace out of its sleeve and announced that not only will they support the Advanced Access Content System (AACS), just like HD DVD, but that they're adding two more weapons (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050810-5194.html) in the fight against piracy: BD+ and ROM-Mark. The ploy seems to have worked, because not only did it net them Twentieth Century Fox, but this week two other companies have hopped on board with Blu-ray.
Earlier this week Universal Music Group said that they would adopt Blu-ray as the standard for their next-generation audio discs—a nice catch for the BDA. Even better, Lion's Gate Home Entertainment today said (http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/August2005/17/c0890.html) that they, too, want on the Blu-ray bandwagon.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 17 /CNW/ -- Lions Gate Home Entertainment (LGHE), a division of Lions Gate Entertainment (NYSE: LGF; Toronto), announced today that it will release content on the new high definition Blu-ray Disc format. As part of its cooperation with the Blu-ray Disc Association, LGHE will begin releasing new films, TV programming and other titles from the company's vast library in that format when Blu-ray hardware launches in North America.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, and Buena Vista Home Entertainment (Disney) were all previously on board. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures has put their HD DVD plans on hold, and NBC Universal has scaled back their release plans for the holiday. Among the big hitters in the computing industry, Apple, Dell, Sony (obviously), HP, and Philips (among others (http://www.blu-raydisc.com/Section-13469/Index.html)) remain committed to Blu-ray. HD DVD's backing (http://www.hddvdprg.com/about/member.html) is considerably weaker, although Microsoft's role in HD DVD (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050731-5152.html) remains unclear. Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, and Universal Pictures are still officially supporting HD DVD. For now.

They're gonna stick to whatever format that they wanna back. The only way they would make movies for the other format is if the one they previously backed didnt take off and the other format did.

If the studios were gonna release movies on both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, they wouldnt be taking sides. But if Blu-Ray catches on over HD-DVD like it looks like it will, people who purchase a PS3 will get a damn cheap Blu-Ray player. Stand alone models are gonna exeed $1000 when they're released in the U.S.
