baby steps, man, baby steps. its awesome that you are really liking death cab. maybe after listening to them for awhile you can work your way back to their older and slightly less accessible material.

i'd like to also recommend elliott smith at this point, and im sure being such a huge brand new fan you might have gotten into kevin devine, hes got some of that more mature sound in the newer records.

bright eyes was a good rec as well. if you want something a little more rockin' the weakerthans are sweet, but i dont know if i have any good recs that would have quite as much energy or focus on dynamics as brand new on their latest.

The Secret Stars (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Secret+Stars)- lo-fi, mostly soft, guitary stuff. I think they said they make their music for cuddling. That sounds a little lame, but they're really not.

The Beta Band (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Beta+Band) - One of the most soothing, deep voices ever.

Stereolab (http://www.last.fm/music/Stereolab) - Electronic, female vocals that alternate between French and English with hints of psychedelia.

Oh for sure. I may get shit for this, but I actually like Songs To Fan The Flames of Discontent the most. To me it was a precursor to Shape, and more simpler str8 up hardcore. Call it the traditional hardcore kid in me  ;)

haha. not at all. it's like techno-y (i wouldn't know the correct term because i don't listen to techno). just have a listen yourself.

Coltrane > Miles.

But Miles is certainly great.

i really don't think you can compare the two. both are amazing musicians, but if you're judging on talent they played different instruments. so if you're going to compare musicians, i'd say a better argument would be armstrong and davis, or something of that sort.

I like Coltrane far more than I like Miles.

/Comparison.

Disagree with this too.

A Love Supreme >>> Anything by Miles.

Here It Goes
01/30/09, 04:35 PM
If you do like Brand New but are looking for similar artists but slightly different, start with Manchester Orchestra and Crime in Stereo. Both hugely influenced by BN, but with a different sound definitely: Manchester is quieter, CIS is louder.

kearn1tm
01/30/09, 08:47 PM
Sketches of Spain, Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew are all above A Love Supreme for me.

Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew are superior to A Love Supreme. Moreover, Bitches Brew has been far more influential on contemporary Jazz than most anything Coltrane has recorded.

Haha. Me no likey....maybe he should go on tour with XO Skeletons (http://www.myspace.com/xoskeletons) *scoff*

Anyway, I agree with pretty much everyone else that the two are incomparable and Miles >>>> Coltrane.
