View Full Version : Anthony Green vs. Max Bemis?

I had an argument with one of my friends the other day.
He's an Anthony Green Fanatic.
Im a Max Bemis freak.
We both had many valid arguments.
I conceded and admitted Anthony had him beat as a vocalist,
But Bemis pwnd in lyrics and musicianship.
Sure, Anthony Green has more experiance,
But i think Bemis has more influence.
Green has raised 3 bands to fame (Saosin, Circa Surive, Zolof)
Bemis has released several albums with ridiculous amounts of tracks, including guest vocals from the likes of Green himself, Chris Conly, Gerard Way, Hailey Williams, Chris Carrabba, Anthony Raneri, and Aaron Gillepsie. Not to mention his current rising project of Two Tongues.
Who do YOU think is a better pick?

Both are extremely over-rated, but Max Bemis is a piece of shit, so Green wins.
And Anthony didn't really do much with Zolof if I remember correctly.

A lot of people like Green, but I've never understood it. He just has an unbelievably high voice. I vote neither though.

I can't get into Say Anything; they just kind of annoy me, to be honest. Two Tongues didn't impress me either. So, Max isn't very high up in my mind.
As for Anthony, I find Circa Survive to be rather overrated, and I prefer Cove's voice in Saosin over his. The Sound of Animals Fighting is pretty sweet, though, and I don't mind his solo music. Thus, Anthony > Max, at least in my opinion.

Nah people way up in Vermont have love for Circa too. I've always liked Circa over Say Anything, and I think that Green's lyrics are far superior to anything Bemis has done.
viva la cymche!
01/29/09, 04:10 PM
They're on the exact same level of over-rated, that they're almost the same person. Singing in a very high range does not make a good vocalist. Maybe if he did more with his voice, he would be more interesting. Plus, Bemis might be a good songwriter (barely), but, I don't think Say Anything is a good band. They have a lot of good songs, but they're realeases never hit me in the way it hits others. Plus, I had to listen to that entire double disc album in the car, and the only track I that stands out (besides the one with Conley featured) was We Killed It, the, or one of the, shortest songs on the record.
Summary: They both suck.
Green, Max Bemis isn't talented and in that video where he discussed "emo" he just became a huge douchebag to me.

Yeah, I just can't stand anything that I've heard with Bemis in it including the Two Tongues album.
Green to me is just a better writer with lyrics that are much more thought provoking. And on the same note I think that musically Circa is better too, as they're far more moody and diverse. If you look at a song like Stop the Fucking Car, the entire song is a build-up,and then it just ends. Fucking brilliant.

Haha, I have agreed so far with everything you've said in this thread.
I am a Circa fan personally (thus the On Letting Go avatar), but even if I wasn't, I just can't stand Bemis. His song WOW (I Can Get Sexual Too) or whatever is simply awful, and while he may be a nice person (I don't really know, nor do I care to know I guess), the songs he writes make me want to incur a large amount of wrath onto him.

You're going to judge Say Anything and Bemis on that one song, which isn't even that bad, and completely ignore the rest of the stuff they've done? Don't get me wrong, Bemis is no genius, neither is Green, but Say Anything is a pretty decent band.

bemis. green is a better singer in the technical sense, but his voice can be extremely grating. plus bemis is a much cooler person, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging your better than some people when you actually are.

not true i liked it from belt, yellow cat, and chia-like, all the songs were just well written musically and the vocal/lyrical style was different from what i was used to
woe is what sealed the deal for me. coming up with the ending to that song is proof of genius.

interviews, both video and in print. i understand how he's off putting, but so am i and i respond positively to his "arrogance" and find that artists who genuinely seem to have some skill and talent and recognize that in themselves have more true down to earth qualities. it's the same reason i don't get mad at bono for making out there comments about u2 and himself being a rock star and king of the world, because he's fucking BONO and they sell out any place they play no matter the size on this planet in a matter of minutes and clearly have the artistic integritiy to back it up.

someone is probably going to rip into you for thinking youre comparing max to bono. have you ever read or watched any videos with anthony? now that is a cool dude, doesnt take himself too seriously. he is just a great guy who doesn't put himself above anyone else and is really good with fans and people around him. i dont think im understanding what youre saying, max is arrogant and down to earth at the same time?

i'm not comparing his talent to bono, i'm comparing his attitude. and that might not even be accurate i've been drinking. but if you read that again, i'm saying my definition of down to earth is different than most. i'ts great to be humble and all, but sometimes there's something great to be said about someone who recognizes that they have talent and are smarter than most of the idiotic fucks surrounding him in this worthless "scene". i know nothing about how bemis treats his fans, and if he's a dick in that regard there's no defense for that. but, he's clearly an extremely an intelligent person, has catchy melodies and lyrical hooks oozing out of him and he knows it. i find nothing wrong with being self aware, especially when oneself is talented. now granted if you don't find him talented or think his music sucks you're going to find his personality coupled with that just that much more irritating. biut i don't know what to tell you if you don't like IARB

oh no i know what you were saying about the bono thing. i was just saying other people might jump on you for it because they wont really look at what you mean. i kind of get what youre saying now but max always just seemed like a douche to me. there is a fine line between recognizing your own talent and coming off as an asshole. and its not that i dont really like say anything but after a little while i just get irritated by his voice and some of the lyrics are kind of blah to me. im a big fan of anthony and circa so im always going to make an argument for them no matter what.

and vise versa for me and say anything so that's cool. i'm just naturally irritated by guys who sing in a range that is clearly unnatural and i wonder how they even discovered they could hold a pitch that high. not to mention, that even if it a was female with that same voice i think his tone is terrible and distracting and take away from his genuine knack for lyrics and melody.

at least you can have a decent conversation about this. so many other people would just flip out and get all AP.net about it. i dont even think of anthony's voice as being that high anymore. the first time i heard it i liked it so i guess its just one of those things that is either something you like or something you dont. one of things i really like with the release of avalon is that those lyrics are easy to understand on the surface and are nice and simple but still sound great. and then with circa you really have to read into them and put your own spin on the meaning. he can pull it off both ways and i think a lot of people would struggle with that.

anthony's vocal range isn't "unnatural" its just unusual, hes an upper-end tenor I which is still a guy range. the reason it sounds higher than everyone else is because most tenor I's dont really belt out at the top of their range very often at all cause they dont need to; in these kinds of music, the louder chorus melodies are typically written in the upper ranges of a baritone or tenor II, which happens to be closer to the middle of a tenor I's range. you'd be surprised but actually adam lazzara of TBS has the same vocal range as anthony green, and he proves it in the song "one-eighty by summer" -- hes singing the same notes anthony sings in his songs. the only thing is adam doesnt belt that much while anthony is belting all the time, and anthony's voice is a bit thinner than adam's. other examples "in the scene" are chris carraba of dashboard, lead singer of the used, claudio of coheed and cambria (although hes worse than anthony is with the whole "thin voice" thing).
it should be noted that i havent listened to any of those latter 3 examples since i was maybe 13 years old. hahaha

hahaha why the fuck would you judge say anything completely from a song that was clearly written as a parody of modern mainstream pop music? you can even tell by the video that the song is a complete joke. its an enjoyable pop song too regardless. but it should be noted that that album (IARB) is the only one i consider to be worthwhile by say anything, they're really just a scene band who struck gold and made one really good album of quality that they'll never reproduce.
that said, anthony's definitely the cooler guy. i met him before their show with thrice and he was just so down to earth and chill, i was pretty surprised. i had never been a circa fan and i really wasnt much afterward but after meeting him and seeing just how much charisma he had on stage, how much he could get the crowd into it, i mean it just added a set of balls to that high voice (along with his scruffle of facial hair, lol) and made me realize that anthony green is a fuckin' MAN. meanwhile max has a really loud mouth and is always trying to say something poignant to gain publicity and you can tell he just thinks really highly of himself and thinks hes more important to music than he actually is. yeah, you wrote a sweet album, get over yourself you're not preserving a scene or leading a movement.

Ah I knew that was the wrong song to go with, as you are right. I have heard other songs (just to clear that up that I'm in no way judging them on one song because that would be stupid), and I didn't care for anything else as I thought it lacking in creativity and imagination, which is what Green's lyrics are full of.
And that's the problem I have too. I've listened to some of IARB and I don't really understand the hype. I guess it's all personal preference, but I think it was overhyped by a lot of people, and didn't live up to my expectations of what a good album should be, whereas both Circa albums (On Letting Go not so much) have been amazing.

Anthony Green. How is this even serious? His vocal range is out of this world. He has such control over his voice as well. Great lyrics. The whole package. My little sister once put on Say Anything's self titled on in my car. I had to take it out. It was so goofy and cheesy. Especially that song Hate Everyone.
