Has anyone ever heard of this?

Apparently this is suppose to be the worst film ever made and is currently becoming a cult classic. I couldn't believe it was real until someone told me they've actually ordered it from Amazon.

At least watch the trailer if you could use a good laugh.

Don't think they originally intended for this to be a "black comedy," but lol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Room_(film)

The settings of The Room are important to the film. Most of the action takes place in Johnny and Lisa’s living room – a constructed set, which is notable for its red walls, columns in the corners, framed photos of spoons, a television behind a sofa, a sandpainting, and a spiral staircase that leads up to the bedroom. Characters come and go as they please – even when Johnny and Lisa are not home – often staying for such a short period of time that they don’t bother to close the door.

Occasionally actors from The Room other than Wiseau will attend the screening. In April 2008, at the conclusion of the screening, Kyle Vogt who played Peter was spotted in the back of the theatre. Once his presence was realised, he received a standing ovation and was ushered to the front by the crowd for an impromptu Q&A. He was able to confirm what many suspected which was that he left the production once his contracted time was up, then rather than giving his remaining lines to someone like Denny, as he suggested to Tommy, they instead inserted a completely different actor to carry on where Peter left off, leaving the audience bewildered yet again. Robyn Paris who plays Michelle was present at the 2008 anniversary screening, hiding out under a wig.

I'd actually say it's much, much worse.

Not sure what's funnier, the special effects of them on the roof or the actual "acting".

The reviews on Amazon are great as well:

It is, without question, the worst film ever made. Including movies made on beta max video cameras in special education high school classes. But this comment is in no way meant to be discouraging. Because while The Room is the worst movie ever made it is also the greatest way to spend a blisteringly fast 100 minutes in the dark. Simply put, `The Room' will change your life.

Hahaha wow, the roof scenery looks fucking terrible, not to mention that lead guy looks and sounds absurdly bad. It's probably not a good idea to have a lead actor whose English isn't always understandable.

i cannot wait to experience this - there's a theater in LA that has monthly midnight showings. from the wiki page:

"On the last Saturday of every month, there is a midnight (11:55pm, Saturday night) screening Sunset 5 Theater, where a cult following of about one hundred loyal fans go to interact with the film in a similar fashion to The Rocky Horror Picture Show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rocky_Horror_Picture_Show). Audience members dress up as their favorite characters, throw plastic spoons at the movie screen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projection_screen), toss footballs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football) to each other from short distances, and yell insulting comments and criticisms about the quality of the film."

The Room

You have to watch this friends first of all. Secondly you have to go into it thinking that this is a legit movie.....(because it is? cough)...Anyways, this movie is made by a man named Tommy Wuseau. He's a foreigner of some kind, and this is his attempt at making a soap opera type film. But what he makes instead is a movie thats so unbelievably bad that its actually good because of it. Like I cant tell you if this was intentional or not, but regardless its a MUST SEE. I think this movie has the record for longest running movie to be playing in the theaters...as it still plays in California weekly.

GREAT movie.

Oh my....this movie. There are so many words. Anything you may read about it is absolutely dead on. I bought it on Amazon and received it in the mail a couple days ago. Watching it tonight was an incredible experience I will not soon forget. The entire film is so incomprehensible, such a horrific trainwreck....that you must watch it as soon as you can and share it with those closest to you. If you are in any way at all a fan of sitting around with some good friends and mocking a terrible film, this is right up your alley. Hell, this is up your alley regardless. Characters we have never ever met before walk in and out of scenes to say something of apparent importance and then they disappear back into the nothingness they came from. There are framed photographs of a spoon for some reason. Storylines are created and then dropped just as quickly as they were introduced. Old ladies have breast cancer and then apparently they don't, or it's simply inconsequential because it's never mentioned ever again. A young man named Denny has a run in with a drug lord during the first half hour for some inexplicable reason, which is then left unexplained for the duration of the film. The skyline on the rooftop scenes is blue screened in and I really don't know why. Men stand around in tuxedos and decide to "play a game of football" which basicaly consists of them standing about three feet away from each other and tossing the ball back and forth. They do this several times actually. Gratuitous sex scenes abound in the first half hour (I think there were roughly 3 in the first 30 minutes or so) where Tommy Wiseau apparently makes love to Lisa's navel and we have the unfortunate displeasure of watching his naked ass writhe about. One of the sex scenes even looks like it was a repeat shot from an earlier sex scene. Emotions swing wildly. There is barely a plot here. After a good ten minutes, you won't care. The dialogue is so trite and horribly read that nearly everything spoken becomes an instant joke. I am dying to see this at one of the screenings in L.A. now.

Oh and for Arrested Development fans, apparently David Cross was a huge fan of this movie when it came out around 2003 and he allegedly wanted to make references to it. There's a particular scene in this movie where Tommy Wiseau's character, Johnny, does a horrible impression of a chicken and several other men join him in making horrible impressions of their own. Watching it, I could not help but wonder if it served as an inspiration for the reoccurring chicken joke on Arrested Development. Check it out and see what you think.

Just looks like a regular shitty movie to me, no Howard the Duck or Gigli.

IAmNietzche
02/09/09, 06:47 AM
In pre-production (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-production), director Tommy Wiseau had to decide upon the shooting format of the film. He was confused about the differences between 35 mm film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/35_mm_film) and high-definition video (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_video), so he decided to shoot the entire film in both formats with two cameras (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movie_camera) side-by-side on the same mount. This experiment allowed Wiseau to compare the formats on a large scale, and he plans to use the information that he gathered for a DVD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD) documentary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_film) and a book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book).

Ha.

SkyHeldUpByStar
02/09/09, 07:36 AM
Yeah, you can tell every single time when he switches back and forth between the two formats (which is very often).

This may look like a regular shitty movie you see on the Sci-Fi channel every weekend, but I assure you it is not. This movie is far worse than those movies. There is nothing redeemable about it other than its status of being "so bad it's great."

Edit: I also think that part of the draw for The Room is the mythos surrounding it. There's that huge audience of people who have gone to see it faithfully every weekend for the past five years during the midnight showing. The antics of said audience are now notorious around California and thanks to an extensive Entertainment Weekly article this past December, the word has begun to spread. Tommy Wiseau, the writer, director, producer, and star comes from somewhere in Europe but nobody knows where....because he refuses to tell anyone for some reason. He somehow spent six million dollars making this movie...but nobody knows where it came from....because he refuses to tell anyone for some reason. He has stated that he spent 1 million dollars on the soundtrack alone which is laughable because of how bad the soundtrack is (see the love scenes). He paid big bucks to get a huge billboard up in California advertising his movie with his face plastered on it...and it's still there to this day. Apparently Tommy Wiseau even attempted to get his film nominated for the Academy Awards by putting it up "For Your Consideration." He shows up for every midnight screening and fields questions, no matter how awful they are, and apparently still does not fully understand the motivation behind the audience's desire to see the film. His answers to their questions are just as incoherent as the movie itself. One of the crew members has said that filming was a horrific experience because everyone would show up to the set except for Tommy on certain days because he would only arrive when he "felt inspired by the art." Wiseau says in interviews now that he always intended for this to be a black comedy to which one of his actors, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that this was pure bullshit and that Wiseau longed for this movie to be his big dramatic breakthrough. The movie was intended to be serious as all get out. I don't think Tommy Wiseau even knows what "black comedy" means...

Most of this has been said, but here's my take:

I finally got around to watching this today. Cinematic masterpiece. I don't think it would be nearly as funny if Wiseau didn't star in it, his accent alone provided tons of laughs for me. Several storylines were dropped in the middle, which quite frankly, blew my mind. You're introduced to characters who don't get explained until 30-45 minutes afterwards. That along with the picturesque shots of San Francisco, the "football" playing, and the flower shop scene make this a must-see for any casual movie fan.

Haha, that was my reaction the first time I watched it, and a friend of mine who saw it recently said the same thing. I think it gets more amusing upon repeat viewings because of all the things you really start noticing. I didn't even notice the first time that I watched it, but at the end when Johnny shoots himself (does anybody even care about spoiler tags for this movie?), Denny shouts out "Tommy why?!?" instead of "Johnny why?!?" That got another chuckle from me.

But yeah, I agree it's more jaw droppingly awful than funny the first time you see it. Literally everything wrong you could do in a movie happens on screen here. I really wish I could have been a fly on the wall when the academy came across his submission.

Oh, and apparently that guy at the end of The Room who shows up out of nowhere and acts as if we're supposed to know who he is, is actually supposed to be Peter the psychologist from earlier in the film. I guess the actor quit and Tommy replaced him with this guy but chose not to explain it. His only reasoning?

Peter left. Now you are like Peter, but you are Steven

I read that AV Club interview a few days ago and it just completely creeped me out. The part about the sex scenes and that one bit about Danny and how there would be multiple actors for each character was bizarre. Even in the text I had trouble understanding it. I'm completely astonished at how seriously he takes it.

Lisa, who had pretty much “just gotten off the bus from Texas.” Oh, and she was 18. I believe our wincing was audible over the phone. EWWWWWWWWWWW. Fuck that is gross.

Hahaha, that was my reaction. Probably a bit of information I could have gone without. I just think it's hilarious that Steven is supposed to be Peter because just the other night I was having a discussion with a friend of mine about who Steven may have been, and this was one of the overriding theories. I guess Peter just died when he tripped while playing tuxedo football.

I don't know if I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but Tommy was strange, possibly on drugs/ caffeine, and unreliable. He left the autograph line to play football outside the theater where he proceeded to run into the street, almost getting hit by a car. He answered his Q&As in a way which left us more confused than ever, and he invited a birthday boy onstage, lifted him, flipped him upside down, and had the crowd sing to him. Go see this psycho if he comes to town.

In the EW article (which is not online yet) Schklair tells the story of how Wiseau met him in 2002 and asked him to not only be the script supervisor but also to “tell the actors what to do, and yell ‘Action’ and ‘Cut’ and tell the cameraman what shots to get.” Here’s the exchange, according to Schklair:

Schklair: “Umm…you want me to direct your project?”
Wiseau: “No! I am director!”
Schklair: “Yeah, you’re the director, whatever. But you want me to direct your movie for you?”
Wiseau: “Yes, please.”

^ One of my favorite moments. A lot of people miss that one on the first viewing.

Mark: I used to know a girl; she had a dozen guys. One of them found out about it...beat her up so bad she ended up at a hospital on Guerrero Street.

Johnny: Aha ha ha. What a story, Mark.
Possibly my favorite part.

I'm so glad this thread got bumped. After a couple years of contemplating it, my friend and I finally watched this a couple months back.

I still need to see this and really want to. It's going to be very hard to be better than Troll 2 though in a best worst kind of way.
