i got into this discussion after watching Notorious (which by the way is garbage, it's totally just a puff piece for Sean Combs and the guy who played 2pac was terrible). but it's hard for me to say who the best rapper of all time is, i just have a top 5 in no particular order:

Jay-Z
Eminem
Nas
Kanye West (when he raps, he's a genius. when he sings, he's a joke)

Eminem has admitted that he's well aware that he only got as far as he did in hip-hop because he was white. I just dislike how so many people try to obscure the fact that he's a phenomenal rapper of his own merits.

Nas is one of the most respected rappers out there, not just among fans but also his peers. His delivery is just so good, he doesn't need to rely on fancy beats or overly catchy hooks (disregard Street Dreams and that song with R. Kelly, etc.). Nas never disappoints with his releases, from Illmatic to Untitled (Hero is a sick song, you can't deny that). You make good points, but I highly disagree that Nas is overrated.

As for Kanye, I can see why some don't like him but I got into his music at a time when, forgive the lingo but, rap and hip-hop were truly dead. You had garbage being released by Lil Jon and company polluting the airwaves and here comes Kanye who had something to say and some of the most creative beats in years. Say what you want about his personality, but he's a genius in the studio. Last Call from College Dropout is probably one of my favorite tracks ever.

Let's just hope he's done with this Pop Art bullshit and gets back to what he does best. These two rappers are very different in my view, but both are favorites
