My band is called Pool of Radiance
Please check us out @ www.myspace.com/poolofradiance
We have 2 rough demos up now which were recorded in my frends garage using garageband, a cheap microphone and an amp which was plugged directly into the computer
Sorry for the quality, as we did not know how to mix or master in garageband
But go check us out and let us know what you think of the music

no offense, but...

and i don't see how that would be for fans of screamo as it is not screamo. if you want to sound screamo, you should sound more like this...

Not screamo.

01/30/09, 06:19 PM
Haha it has normal vocals mixed with screaming
Therefore it is considered screaming
Look at the red jumpsuit apparatus
They're screamo, yet they have normal vocals as well on songs like face down and atrophy
So anything that has normal singing and screaming is considered screamo
And like i said the recordings were very rough because they were done with almost no experience and no good equipment
So if you dont like it im sorry but it is considered screamo by many people.

you sir, are very horribly wrong. the red jumpsuit apparatus is not screamo. neither is the devil wears prada, scary kids scaring kids, alesana, bring me the horizon, or a ton of other bands who mix screaming with melodic vocals. to the people on this site it is widely considered post-hardcore, for lack of a better word (though some can think of better words). if you want real screamo listen to swing kids, city of caterpillar, circle takes the square, touche amore, comadre, etc.

ok...
so i think weve pretty much established that what you did was NOT screamo WHATSOEVER...
that being said... i really didnt enjoy it... at all...
thats not to say i didnt see potential...
so here are my suggestions:
1) lyrically, you were ok, they were generic and some even made me cringe, vocally, not at all... i recomend either auto tuning the voice, improving it, or finding a new singer
2) musically it was good... deifnetely showed some originality there.... LOVED the instrumental demo
3) dont be cocky... a site like this has a MASSIVE audience and before you go posting a project like this make sure you KNOW its the best it could be. NEVER rush it... learn how to mix and then post it on here, because i can see jason or someone posting a link to your page right now and saying "worse than brokeNCYDE" Try finding someone who knows how to produce or rent studio space for a day or two or something
Anyway i hope you take what i say seriously. Im really open to any music (i listen to everything from brokencyde to radiohead to anberlin to underOATH)

Thanks man
I meant to say clean vocals, not normal lmao
And yeah i didnt mean to come off as rude or anything in my last post
but i was told by some record executives i talk to and my friends know that say my music is screamo/rock/metal
Its metal because of the riffs we use behind the clean vocals/screaming
Its apparently screamo to them because of the screaming, but i guess maybe its more Post Hardcore than anything you're right haha
And i will heed your advice and try to find a producer or sound engineer to help us record a demo
the studios here in Maine are expensive and we dont have money to spend on studio time so we tried to self produce
I promise i will ave better quality demos up eventually
I just have those demos up as a demo purpose, not to showcase our full potential, but just a snippet of it.
They are also unmixed/unmastered, hence why the vocals sound so sloppy on the demos.
My real niche for mt voice is really more for things like pure screaming like lamb of god or stuff like that genre, or soft pop music or light rock like 3 doors down and stuff.
So again sorry if my last post seemed rude or anything, as i didnt mean it to
And i will take your advice and work with it as soon as i can
Thanks!
P.s. I have much time to improve as im only 17, so dont go thinking im an adult :P

Actually that band page is going to be changing into my solo page because once i graduate im going to basic training for the army and my first base is either hawaii or germany once im done with my basic and AIT
So im buying a ton of nice recording stuff for home recording stuff to sound like studio quality songs
And im making my own electronic/powerpop type music
Cause im good at the cheerful stuff just as good as i am with screaming haha
Im hoping to electronic music with cool guitar riffs and synth melodys will attract the attention of a much broader audience
Especially if im over in germany as i know they LOVE that kind of music haha

haha are there a ton of bands out there combining synth riffs with powerpop riffs and stuff but then using screaming vocals instead of clean?
Im thinking about doing like an electronic band with screamers and one clean singer
Me being one of the screamers/synth players
It will hopefully be a 6 or 7 piece band
2 guitar players, 2 synth players, 2 screamers and 1 clean singer.
Im trying to do something innovative and something original
I dont want to be like all the rest of those powerpop type bands
I wanna start a revolution lol

Hello The Devil Wears Prada/ Alesana/ Breathe Carolina/ List Goes On.
The Drvil Wears Prada and Alesana dont really use synths in their music much
And when they do its more of a metal type sound then a pop sound
And breathe carolina is more powerpop anyways, i havent heard many songs from them but from what i have heard they dont scream
Im not saying im gonna invent something completely new with what im gonna do
You'll just have to wait and when it happens you'll understand what i mean haha
Im not gonna have the typical cliched type music out
I am going to make music with meaning and passion
not just for money or fame, but for the fans
So just wait ;]
2 synths and 3 vocalists? No offense, but I can't see that sounding like anything except a big clusterfuck of noise.

The fact that you want six or seven band members = just like alesana.
Screaming and singing = Alesana/ The Devil Wears Prada.
Synth = So many fucking bands.
Breathe Carolina does scream on a few tracks.
And regarding the first point of your post, how do you use synth in a metal way? The fact that you bang your head around more than you actually play it?
I feel sorry for your fans.

Wow why are you trying to put me down?
As the other guy said...good luck to me
B/c luck is all you need to make music sound good
That and obviously skill
But you dont have to be an ass to me about my idea
I know alesana/the devil wears prada does singing and screaming...Im not stupid
And theres different ways to play every instrument haha
Theres different ways to play the synth, just as there is t play the guitar
So please dont try to start anything on here, i was just throwing out my idea, so please dont bash it

Lol i can see why you'd say that because 2 synths might sound weird together
but theres The Medic Droid who has 2 synths and one lead singer and 1 back up singer and it sounds good
but theyre electroni and clean vocals only, not screaming and stuff
But it would probably just be one synth player and 3 vocalists, because a band can sound really good with 2 screamers and a clean vocalist
Look at Bullet For My Valentine they sound pretty darn good with 2 screamers
But yeh it will be cool once i can actually get the ball rolling on this project so i can record stuff snd show you all how good it will turn out

But seriously im not sure if you're trying to starta fight on here or something, but it wont happen because im not that immature and i only wanted to express what i was doing with MY music eventually. Pool of Radiance was started by Mike Smith on 1/17/2009. This was a thought of his to become the next big screamo band in Maine or even the Nation. Mike was going to have this be a solo project, but as he thought about it he figured a band would be better as we could play live shows and get more money if we were a band. Mike then receruited his friend of 3 1/2 years Sky Critchfield to play Drums. He also recruited his friend of 2 years Steve Wiley to be their guitarist. From there they got their first gig, which they have been practicing for as much as possible, as a group, and as individuals. Mike has some nasty screams and vocals, Sky has some nasty drumming going on, and Steve is a great guitarist for lead or rhythym, and is great at playing hard songs. All together they form Pool of Radiance. So far they have gotten great reviews for the demos they have up, and they will hopefully continue to grow as a group as time goes on.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I guess i'll be the first to give you a bad review. You guys are fucking atrocious!

Is everyone on here really this rude?
Everyone has different styles of music they like
Plus, these are DEMOS for the purpose of DEMOS, they're not mixed, not mastered, and sure as hell arent as good as they could be
Thats why its called a DEMO, not a finished product, not a mixed or mastered product, but a DEMO
So if you have something bad to say so be it, but at least im out there doing my thing and getting paid to do gigs

people on this site are rude. if a large group of people dislike something, they will group together and rip on it as a whole. that being said you have to think of what you're asking for. you asked people to tell you what they thought. this is where people end up getting their feelings hurt, as most people really don't want the truth, and only want to be told what they want to hear. sometimes people call me a dick because i do tell them the truth. but i always have to explain to them it's what they asked me to tell them. think about that.

screaming sounds kind of tough guy-ish. nothing too special, but it's decent. but i listen to a lot of like hardcore/punk type stuff so my ears are used to better screaming. but for just starting it sounds pretty good. i'm kind of in a band, but we just need a drummer. but my friend ray screams for us and he's pretty good. he does like a thrash kind of scream, and he does it with no mic at practice and we can still hear him perfectly over the instruments.

haha nice your screamer must be damn good then haha
and yeah my screaming still needs work, but if i go to germany for a base for the army, i will be being taught by the underground german thrash metal bands who can scream amazing and a bunch of bands said they'd teach me to scream like crazy good without hurting my vocal chords for free
So that will be wicked fun i personally think.
My voice is more suited for either just screaming, or songs from bands like 3 doors down and stuff. If you could hear me live you would know i sound much better than those recordings make me sound haha

Yeah theres a certain way i do it that it doesnt hurt my throat
But if you try to hard it definitely will end up hurting you in the longrun lol. But ive been learning little by little how to control the scream....Im good at the middle screams, and im starting to be able to do low growls, and i can even do like howie from killswitch screams now, but those hurt my throat.
So im still developing my screams and i hope they will be fully developed in a couple years so i can make some kickass music
I also need guitar lessons, as once i go solo i will not be able to play very well because im self taugh and didnt learn chords yet i only know how to read tabs
So im gonna have someone teach me guitar haha

Sorry man, but you are just not meant to sing. The screaming made me laugh too.
As me and someone else have said though, Im 17, just started singing 2 years ago with NO formal training whatsoever, and i just discovered my screaming about 5 months ago, so obviously im not going to be amazing at singing or screaming
I have years and years to improve and perfect my abilities
I can however play bass pretty well and synth pretty well
So maybe that talent will get me somewhere if i can join an existing band or something
Who knows, i guess only time will tell rather singing and fronting a band is right for me, or if i should just be a member of a band playing an instrument.

I might want to add, use grammar and such if you're trying to promote your band. I'm no grammar nazi, but it always makes for a better appearance and people will take you more seriously. That would help immensely.

Haha ok i will change it to i wish they would die then, because honestly they need to. Their music has no point to it whatsoever and i dont understand half of it.
And i understand what you mean with the grammar. It seems more professional and mature. Instead of just me putting a bunch of words without structure which seems sloppy.

Pretty any much band member that's well known and posts on here does it, it definitely helps their appearance. No one's going to listen to you if you type like a fourteen year old. Look at The Maine.

musically its alright...VERY cliche and predictable
vocals, are terrible....get some training and they could be better i suppose.... and the "screaming" sounds like a bad attempt at a tough guy scream.

Im glad you like the music. Im not sure how the songs are cliche as one is about war and how bad it is and one is about a friend who almost killed herself...but i am glad you have an opinion.
Yes as ive said. Im 17, just started singing 2 years ago. I plan on getting vocal lessons when i get the money. I also plan on working on my screams because they arent the best at the moment.
Thanks for the input though. Appreciate it.

Bottom line: your vocals don't cut it. you will never get anywhere. bragging about getting paid a little for a gig doesn't mean shit. lines like "Mike was going to have this be a solo project, but as he thought about it he figured a band would be better as we could play live shows and get more money if we were a band." are ridiculous. . You seem to be only interested in the money that will never come your way due to the shitty band you have. Musicians that play for the love of the music is who i want to listen to. Not some horrendous band that makes a myspace page with shitty demos that are only concerned about making money.

Not going to lie, i thought it was a joke at first, It made me sad it wasn't. You've mentioned 3 doors down and red jumpsuit apparatus a few times. Here is your problem, they are all terrible bands. You seriously need to work on your vocals both clean and screaming because honestly they are pretty bad. No one needs formal training to sing well. Also please stop using the word screamo. If you want to know what screamo is check out orchid, transistor transistor, circle takes the square, ect. I wish I could give you some positive words man, but honestly its really not good.

I said to get more money because were unsigned and dont have jobs. And we also need MONEY to get into the recording studio. We play local gigs not just for money, but for the fans we have aquired as well. I could care less about making a lot of money, we just need enough to get into the studio and record better demos. So dont think me or the band is in it just for the money, because were not.

I'm the president of Major Label Records, so I know a thing or two about music, yo, and I've determined that this band isn't very good. That's right - you can all stop debating it, the verdict has been reached.
Actually I haven't listened to the band, but they're called Pool of Radiance, they're screamo, and from Maine, so probably not my thing. Even if they were, apparently they're only in it for all the money they're making.

I'm sorry dude, but the riffs are poorly played, the vocals sound like a 12 year old kid having a sinus attack, and the screams are just plain bad. The lyrics are not original at all.
Honestly, I think you should give up trying to "start a revolution" and being "the nations biggest 'screamo' band." It just isn't going to happen, I guarantee it. It's cool you like music, but I recommend you stay on the listening side of it.

Still have no response about the atrocious vocals. That is a voice not even your mother could love. Your voice is screwing the chances your other band members have.

Yeah i understand now that were more post hardcore type music than screamo. It was a misunderstanding on my part, but myspace doesnt allow us to use post hardcore as a genre or i would.

Actually 3 Days Grace is one of my bigger influences. So tell your brother thank you for the compliment in a way, because even though i will admit my singing is not the greatest, our sound is still not too bad.
Although to the people saying i suck at singing: I realize im not the best, but look at people like the singer from Panic! At The Disco, who sucks in studio and sucks worse live. They still made it big. Look at Fall Out Boy. Patrick Stump sucks live, but they're still famous.
So there's a lot worse singers out there than me

I dont see why you say my drummer only has a bit of potential. He can play double bass like theres no tomorrow and can easily play songs by Disturbed, Trivium, As I Lay Dying and almost any crazy metal band out there. And as for the guitarist, we have a new one now named Steve who can play anything from 3 Doors Down to crazy metal like The Devil Wears Prada, Trivium, and more. Now as for my singing...I have acknowledged the fact it sounds sucky in the recordings, but if you heard me live you'd know i was better than those make me seem. But i am alos mostly a screamer, so im much better at that.
These recordings are from like almost a year ago now, so they sound shitty compared to what we have done now(We just need to get into a studio to record stuff now)
Trust me, the new recordings will sound much better than these.

No offense but Brendie Uries voice is very shrilly and he sounds like hes barely hit puberty. And honestly i like fall out boy, but patrick stump just doesnt cut it live. He sounds so much different live than on the records, which means its a lot of didgital hollywood mumbo jumbo making him sound better. Also, fall out boy as a group is good overall, but patrick really could work on his vocals. And yes the recordings on my bands page may suck, but you cant say i suck live because you've never heard me live haha

Brendon Urie used to not sing to well, but he's really cleaned up his act. You should listen to them again. I'm not a huge Panic fan, but he really isn't that bad of a singer. And Stump has done the same. His singing has improved so much in the last few years. He (depending on the song) can pull of what he did on the record now.
And since you aren't using autotune or anything (if you are it didn't work..) then what I hear is how you would sing live.. so yeah we have heard you live.

Ok yeah i looked up some new panic song and live videos and Brendon Urie has REALLY improved his singing voice. And patrick stump does sound better live than he did even like 7 months ago when i heard them live on tv haha
And no honestly thats not how i sound live anymore at all. I've really improved my screaming over the last year, and my singing voie has developed a bit more
But mostly i just screamo now because its what i was meant to do i think. Go to my bands page and go to Videos and watch the video we have up. You'll see my screaming is much better now.
I do know my clean vocals do suck compared to a lot of singers out there, but like i said i am only 17 so i do have much time to find a good vocal coach and improve the clean vocals.

Yeah i thought i had mentioned i replaced all clean vocals with screaming? If i didntt hen oh well. Glad you think its better though. But yeh i kind of didnt use enough breaths in between choruses and verses to make them sound amazing lol. But i am much better, i wish the video quality was better than it was.

Idk what it means, but unfortunately i found out it is a copyrighted name by the Dungeons and Dragons company back in the 80's so after our first concert were changing our name so any legal battles dont ensue haha
how is this not a joke topic?
Just bc the vocals suck doesnt mean its a joke topic. I've already said many times that the vocals in this suck, so stop trying to say its a joke. Weve already established that it's not(If you had read the past posts like you should have). So if you want to think itsa a joke then go ahead haha i dont care.

You can't be serious?
edit: That was a bit harsh. Look your drummer isn't bad, and I'm not going to say anything about the vocals as it's already been said, but seriously get some new songs because at the moment you sound like a bad linkin park/limp bizkit rip off, you definetaly sound more like nu-metal than anything else. It's good that you're trying to make music but your attitude sucks, you ask for criticism then get upset and defensive when it is given, certainly not the way to do things as maybe you should be listening to people's advice.

Oh no its not that i cant take criticism, but the way you guys were saying some of the stuff pissed me off a little. So of course ill get a bit defensive. But trust me ive been taking EVERYTHING people are saying into consideration and working to improve. I've been writing newer, catchier songs, i've improved on my screaming a LOT since a year ago when the recordings were made, and i've been doing a bit of vocal technique stuff with my chorus teacher whos helping me with pitch and stuff. So new stuff you here will be much better.

Haha no one cares if we can play other bands stuff. But were doing a cover, of a cover, so were gonna try and make it our own, so it will sound interesting.
Oh and we dont have any new stuff yet as we took a huge break after these were recorded to write songs and imrpove on our older stuff. But the new stuff will be up soon i hope, and if not it will be up by may hopefully if we can get into a studio.
