Forgive me if there's already been a thread, but I searched and found nothing.

A criminally overlooked and under-appreciated Alt Country/Country Gothic band that was overshadowed among the '90s Alt Country subgenre. While Old '97s, Whiskeytown and Wilco were teetering on the edge of mainstream acceptance, David Eugene Edwards was writing some of the most naturalistic "man/nature romanticism" lyrics of the decade.

Start with their best release, 2002's Folklore: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/21763-sixteen-horsepower-folklore

If you enjoy Calexico, Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), or Uncle Tupelo, you may enjoy 16 Horsepower.

Folklore and Secret South are quite good.

Folklore and Secret South are quite good.

They were the culmination of everything Edwards was building to prior to Woven Hand. However, I do have an affinity for the older stuff (Sackcloth 'n' Ashes is incredibly fun).

Yeah, 16 Horsepower is good stuff.

Come to think of it, they got progressively better with each release. Always a commendable feat.

I defy anyone who enjoys contemporary Folk to listen to Flutter and not instantly fall in love (off the album Folklore people). Yes, that statement is hyperbolic hype, but it's such a good track.

Vinh, what do you think of Woven Hand?

Odd how everyone can hop on singer-songwriter bandwagons (Beam, Oldham, Bon Iver) yet no one is giving this a chance despite the clear RIYL portion of your post.

Woven Hand doesn't do much for me, although I will admit I haven't devoted much time to them.

Ryan will find this thread two months from now and fall in love with it. Give it time.

Woven Hand is really enjoyable, in my opinion. It's Edwards expanding on the direction 16 Horsepower was headed towards. I prefer Mosaic to most 16 Horsepower releases (with the exception of Folklore).

I'll be sure to give Mosaic a few more listens.

I have Folklore, and I really like it. Haven't listened in forever, though. That may be on tonight's agenda.

Good to see some fans, you have any of their other albums?

I don't, my good man.

I think I'm going to get back into this one, see how it goes, and then scoop up some more if I'm feelin' it.

Any guidance?

Well another album similar to Folklore would be Mosaic (which is actually Woven Hand, but still David Eugene Edwards).

Sticking with 16 Horsepower I'd say Secret South if you want a sound closer to Folklore.

Their earlier work isn't as good, but as Kearn1tm said, it's still a lot fun. FzJHt4AU71c

I've always loved his other project Woven Hand, but still haven't given 16 Horsepower a good listen.

i didn't even know Woven Hand existed until i started looking through the related artists on RYM. It looks pretty promising since most of the albums are close to 4/5.
