View Full Version : you think bit torrent is safe?

this post is like a general rant about fools who think that bit torrent is a safe way to download pirated software, music, and movies.

using bit torrent is the absolute most surefire way to get nailed these days. the riaa and mpaa are going after bit torrent tracker sites and they are winning settlements.

this is how it works:
the riaa/mpaa sues a site (such as lokitorrent) citing millions or billions in infringements
the owner of the site flips out
the riaa sets up a deal -- the owner wont get sued if they hand over the site, the log data, and promise to never do it again

when this happens, the riaa now has the tracker logs, including a list of ip addresses, timestamps, and files that were downloaded and uploaded. if you use torrents often, you know that you upload AND download, and that you have a share ratio.

this share ratio isn't a number just pulled out of someone's ass, it is a statistic generated by how much you are uploading and downloading, and it is personally identifiable to you!

long story short, if you use torrents with a tracker that gets owned by the riaa/mpaa any time soon, don't think that they will take things to court. they will sell you and everyone else down the river in a heartbeat to save their own asses.

ya its messed up how torrent programs log your ip adress, but if you do use it use peer guardian also.

okay einstein. tell us something we don't already know. oh wait... what you said was just a bunch of stupid crap. the riaa doesn't make a deal with anybody. they simply sue the people who host the tracker.

it seems to me that the RIAA havent really nailed anyone for downloading music over limewire..etc lately.. so im guessing the new trend is to nail people from these sites

so you are saying that makes it ok to download songs. I'm not saying I don't download music I'm just saying I don't think your logic is right.

if i buy a cd that has copyright protection on it, i cant put it on my ipod.. so in my opinion i should be able to download those tracks off the internet cause i already paid for it.

you do realize that that's a silly comment, right?

because I basically meant that we want to rip cd's to put them in our mp3 players. and if I buy the cd, why the hell would I purchase the same tracks on iTunes?

record companies have no right to do this. once I buy the cd, it's mine, and I should be able to do whatever I want with it.

1. That's what you get for having an mp3 player.

the acceptance cd, i couldnt get onto my ipod.. same with foo fighters. there are ways to get around the copyright protection but its dumb that i have to go through all that trouble in the first place to listen to something I own

And if you owned a record label you would think it was stupid that a bunch of teens downloaded your cds for free.

agreed but you have to think about the ones that paid for the album also, and like i said before.. people buy the cds with the copyright stuff on them and it only encourages to download the tracks they just brought on a cd because they want to rip them to their computer.

Ya but in all honesty there are more downloaders compared to people who bought the album.

be it the riaa or the mpaa, they are making deals with tracker owners. i believe it was lokitorrent that paid an insignificant amount considering what they were up against (something like 50 grand as opposed to millions of dollars in potential fines), transferred the site, and handed over the logs.

(If you can't read between the lines, the chances RIAA will sue outside the states are, well, fucking slim)
