Gas prices by me (Long Island, NY) have soared to a whopping $3.27/gallon (regular, not premium) as a result of Hurricane Katrina (or, as a result of the government wanting to cash in on Labor Day weekend). Just out of curiosity, what's the gas prices around your area?

it's because Katrina knocked out many of the nations refinery infrastructure (plants that convert oil to gas) in Louisiana.

don't blame this on politics. politics didn't make China's demand triple the last two years and up the prices.

its Venuezela where they hoard all the oil!!! and places are alot more accessible by bike or foot in foreign countries than in the U.S. Our country needs to raise minimum wage to match the inflation. I dont know how anyone could survive making $5.15/hr

This is obviously price gouging, where the fuck is the government on this one?

Let's think here:

The oil rigs in the gulf coast pump OIL. Not gasoline. The oil needs to be refined to be turned into gasoline. This takes time. This means that while the price of oil is rising, and rising ridiculously, the price of gasoline should NOT be rising just quite yet. In theory, it should rise when the cost of the oil is passed onto the gas station, and subsequently, we the consumers.

Granted, stock market tensions and worries will be reflected on the pump, but 30-40 cent jumps? Come on. I'm a fucking biology major and even I think this is bullshit.

Maybe I won't be seeing Coheed in Des Moines come October.

And I just saw on CNN.com that in a "Worst Case Scenario", gas will go up to $4 a gallon by September's end. Then again, they also said that New Orleans would be the next Atlantis.

While it's close, it's still hyperbole. Yet another example of the media striking fear into their fellow man. People get scared, and people do anything when they're scared (stockpiling for the millenium, anyone?).

Also, I'll eat my hat when they release these 'strategic oil reserves'.

Just think what would've happened had we not invaded Iraq causing all of the initial price raises....perhaps we'd only be screaming that gas was breaking $2.00 a gallon......oh well, that's the best part about being a college kid...no car!

We have a grocery store that started building gas stations and when you use a card for groceries you can get free gas or discounts. The problem is the gas is watered down and i get 50 miles less a tank. But with the rising costs I might have to use the crap. Do any of you have something like that?
Giant Eagle's GetGo stations are like that. They're selling gas at $2.79 for 87 octane, but the gas is SHIT.

Last night's gas prices were $2.59 a gallon for 87, and this morning were $3.09. Let's all keep in mind that it's OLD gas that's been sitting in the tanks for at least a week or so. There should be no reason prices are going up if the supply is the same as it was 12 hours ago.

read my last post. gas would have to cost almost $6 a gallon for your hybrid to save you money over the same sized, non-hybrid car, even with the tax break, unless you drove it for ten years. then, after ten yeras, you could rub those two shiny nickels together and say you saved money, if the car lasts that long, which i'm pretty sure they don't/won't

I live about 15 minutes northeast of Los Angeles, and yesterday morning the price for reg was $2.98. Drove by the same station at one this morning and it's now $3.05. Most stations around here have been right under $3 (with premium stuff running about $3.07... now $3.18). Guess that ship has sailed.

I'd walk. Ride a bike. Whatever. But I have work and school and a regular life. Walking is plain ridiculous in this weather and these distances, and taking a bus would be more time (2 hours for 5 miles? Give me a fucking break) and grief than it's worth.

So I pay. I can't afford to fill it all the way up (I draw the line at $35 for 11 out of 14 gallons), but I need gas. I understand people have it worse, and it's terrible. What I'm worried about is that we haven't merely fallen on hard times or whatever, but that times are changing; that the cost of living is going up. Things were cheaper in the 50s.

That's what they'll say about us. Things were cheaper back in 2005. Fuck.

First of all, they save you plenty of money, that's the freaking idea. It takes 6 gallons (roughly $20) for a Honda Insight to drive from Baltimore to Boston. Whereas a Dodge Caravan takes 16 gallons (roughly $50). $30 saved. I hope you don't plan on involving math in your career. And who cares about a fast car. Yes, I love driving a fast, nice car as much as the next guy, but when it's going to cost me thousands of dollars upfront and then hundreds more each month, I could care less. I'd rather have the money to take a girl out in a "crappy" car than have a nice ass car and take her to McDonalds.

ADDED: Yeah if it were the same model car, just not Hybrid, it would be closer, but still, I'll take all the help I can get at this point. Good thing I don't own a car.

I bought my 04 Civic for about $16,500. A Prius would've been $26,000 before haggling. Let's just say, a hybrid would've cost another $10,000. If I could save $20 a week on gas, that still means it would take 9.6 years to just break even on the hybrid. I'm pretty sure in 10 years we will have some alternative fuel and my hybrid will be completely outdated.

This has gone around before during last years gas price woes. It has got to be one of the dumbest ideas ever conceived.

And to the piece of shit who is saying that a hybrid isn't a good econmic decision, you are missing to whole point of hybrids. Beyond just saving money, you are consuming a whole lot less gas, thus reducing our substantial dependence on oil (mostly foreign) and reducing harmful emmisions that cumbustion engines emit. Thus taking a step in saving the environment from the cataclismic damage that we are causing every day. Its not just dollars and cents, it is the bigger picture. Pull your head out of your ass and take a step back.

p.s. Those poor people in Louisiana have a whole lot more to worry about than gas prices going up a few cents, think about that.

i mean i hate it hear cuz its boring. theres nothing wrong with it other than i have nothing here. im not a basketball fan, im not a country music fan, i like nascar and ill go to the race but im not a die-hard and the drunk red-necks piss me off. there really isnt a "scene"here. and what there is, are older punks who do nothing but put the younger kids down and beat up on them. its just lame. id rather be in a city like chicago where at least shopping would be fun...not to mention a million other things to do.
there's a lot more to do in indy than people give it credit for. yeah, not too many good concerts come here, but there really is a lot. i grew up in indy, moved away, and moved back with a new appreciation for it. it's the 12th-biggest city in the country, so it's not as small as everyone in indy always thinks it is. i'm not saying that it's the best city in the world, but you get out of indianapolis what you want to get. there's a ton to do downtown if you look hard enough, and carmel, castleton, avon, greenwood, and the other suburbs have plenty to do, too.

ok plenty is stretching it...most of all those places you mentioned have serious faults in them. most of those places dont compare to half of what you can do in other cities...and downtown caters to a select crowd that i want nothing to do with... im not a bar hopper...i dont really drink. nor do i want to be around people who feel the need to get extremely wasted and puke all over everything...thats what downtown, broadripple and castleton have to offer
