Sleeping At The End Of The World – Perspectives
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: January 1, 2008
Who?
This New York quintet blend some pop-punk, some punk-pop, and some alternative-punk-pop, and…. There’s really no way to describe a group like this right now without sounding cliché, but think of Silverstein’s Discovering The Waterfront – the perfect example of making something out of lots of different kinds of nothing – and you’re on the right path to understanding why I can’t stop listening to Perspectives.
How is it?
Unconnected, borderline pretentious song titles will reveal the ‘art’ right off the bat, but you might not catch it right away in the music. At first listen, some of these tracks will sound a little bit familiar, but give ‘em a chance. These are songs that warrant repeat listens in a genre I tend to insultingly dub “Sparta-core”. The pop-punk in the vocals borrows more from groups like Alkaline Trio or Pennywise than Circa Survive (thank God), but the ambition here is just as large as Anthony Green’s, and you can thank God for that as well.
There’s no room for clutter, either: Perspectives is perfectly portioned here in its five-song version. But that’s not to say that we aren’t looking forward to the full-length, because these guys have it in ‘em to make something really solid.
Track Listing
01. The Queen Sleeps / Is Dead / Is Alive
02. Almost / The Dying Piano / We Thought
03. Black Hole / Illusions / Fates
04. No Poet / No Legend / Deep Breaths
05. Make Yourself Believe / The Queen Slept / Escapist
Recommended if You Like
The Black Maria, The Moment, a much less boring Senses Fail
Judge For Yourself
