but you guys won't like them because they aren't hype.

Yeah, they don't sound enough like Springsteen for me to like them.
Seriously though, these guys sound awesome! Thanks for the rec.

that's because he sounds like tom waits!
edit: yeah, it kinda sucks that his best songs aren't on the myspace.

Am I allowed to check them out or should I just wait for the bandwagon to arrive?

I might have to track down some of their stuff then. I love the use of the horns and the strings in that first song on there.
And yeah, he has a little of the Tom Waits about his voice. Very cool.
He sounds a little like both of the singers of Two Cow Garage actually.

You have to wait until they start getting distributed by VC.

I don't see the Tom Waits at all. Again, Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Then you want to get stuff off I Gave Too Much Time To The Wine or There's No Love In This War.

Did you listen to 'July 3, 1944, I Shot a Man'? Waits influence to the max. I love it.

Okay, great. I'll try to grab those first. Thanks!

Yeah, Waits influence, but I still don't see how the guy sounds like him.

I Gave Too Much Time To The Wine is like four EPs. he used to be a solo act but after touring for awhile, other people joined his band so he decided to rerecord a bunch of early stuff with the new band, which is where you get the horns and stuff. the old versions are good but not as good as the ones on that comp.

Okay. Will listen then.
Actually, this is pretty nice. Hear some faint Waits-like vocals, but definitely a Barrett thing you're talking about.

the waits thing i'm talking about was a reference to one of his songs where he makes fun of people for saying he sounds like tom waits. i thought the song was on his myspace but it's not. oh well.

Cool. I wonder how hard the older EP's are to find? I'd love to compare them to the rerecorded ones.
Also, $4 Pabst is such a fucking beautiful song! Just downloaded it off their/his website.

Not liking them. Not hyped enough.
But really. I hate that voice. It's one of the reasons I can't stand the bosstones.

I have no idea. I bought it all when I played with them. I think they're out of print.

Looks like I need to find someone to go see them next week considering they are playing with Murder by Death and they don't sound bad at all.

i'm surprised you haven't seen him before since he's from chicago. though i've seen him like three times in the past year so he's probably gone all the time.

I just don't pay enough attention to the music around here. I'm not sure why, but I guess it's because I don't attend too many shows anymore and I never hear about these bands/musicians unless it's from somewhere like this website (which happens maybe once a year, so it looks like I've hit my quota). I need to figure out some way to keep up to date, but it's hard to sift through shitty bands, just to find a decent/good one.

i guess i never thought about the good band to shitty band ratio. my scene is really fragmented, so the ratio is shifted in the other direction: i basically like every band in the fragment my band caters to and only think a couple aren't very good. but i know that we have a lot of terrible punk bands.

Yeah, I'll vaguely check out bands on any Kinsella band's top friends or something, and that just ends up leading me in a circle so there's that. I'd hope once I get another band going, I can get back into finding bands and such, but for now, I'll just stick to what I know, and if something falls onto my lap, then I'll take a grab at it. None the less, nice rec.

that's what i end up doing. there will be stretches where the only local bands i listen to are the ones i play with and then i'm like fuck there has to be more than that. then i find a couple. it's weird. that's how i found out about these guys. they came to town and someone put us on the show because they thought i would like them. then i spent all my money on their merch, haha.

yeah it's crazy how he came up with all those songs based on letter's his grandfather wrote in world war two. it's definitely my favorite one. i saw him on that tour with mustangs and madras as his backing band. they did all this ambient spacey noise in the background of his songs instead of the normal strings and horns and it was probably one of the best sets i've ever seen. definitely the most unique.

i saw that...i was planning on going to the murder by death show @ schubas, wish he was playing that night too.
really like Reason to Retreat, good song.

I downloaded 'I Gave Too Much Time To The Wine' and am loving it!! Can't find anything else though. Didn't have too detailed a look though. Might just order some off his website.

from what i remember, the earlier stuff was like cds in kind of digipacks/kind of plastic bags, a lot more DIY packaging, so it might be harder to find online. if i get around to it, i could go dig them out of storage. i need something else outof that box anyway.

Also, i've been listening to the clips from There's No Love In This war on iTunes, and i can't wait to buy it. Sounds amazing!
