I just sold my old grey iPod (20 gig) on ebay (with 3000 songs on it) for $500, and so I copied all the songs to my computer, went out and bought a new color one (40 gig), recopied all the songs, and pocked the cash

I think it's a big improvement over the mini's. I would still buy a reg iPod, but for those who don't listen to a lot of songs will love this.

Yeah exactly. I'd rather have something that can hold 10x the amount of songs for about 150 bucks more. That's a deal.

Plus on this thing, it breaks easier I bet. Plus how easy is it to lose it?

according to this report on engaget (it was published a year ago, they may have more or less market right now)
"The NPD Group said on Tuesday that the iPod accounted for 92.1 percent of the market for hard drive-based music players, up from 82.2 percent a year ago (if that’s not dominance, we don’t know what is). Coming up secord and third were Creative Technology players (3.7%) and Digital Networks North America’s Rio (3.2%). While those numbers are no-doubt daunting for the followers, the NPD Group report did mention that there seems to be room for competition in the smaller player market currently topped by Apple’s iPod Mini (which is why Virgin and Creative just rolled out their new 5GB players). The problem for the little guys, says the NPD Group, is that people looking for players in the smaller configuration appear to only know the iPod, with kids are asking their parents for iPods this year rather than just asking for MP3 players, much like we begged our parents for a Nintendo in late late 80s rather than pleading with for a video game console."

Sheesh. I stand corrected on the dominance. Apple products and accessories are sweet, but totally overpriced. I hate how people buy them and then can barely work them. Hopefully these iPods are better quality, it's funny how so many people complain about their iPods breaking down, every week we have an "iPod help" thread.

As for iPods in general, I don't like them. I'm not a fan of Apple. Plus everyone I know that has an iPod has had problems with them and recomended not buying one. Even the Best Buy near me is suggesting not to buy one because when you have a problem with it they can't do anything and you have to ship it back to Apple.

I live with my iPod, and I haven't had any problem with it, save one time when it froze, but was fine. My roommate had an ooolllld one and it died once, but was replaced with a newer one (same generation as mine) and it's been a year without a problem. I think, proportionate to the amount of people who own them, they don't have a huge issue with technical difficulties. I could be wrong tho, I have no stats in front of me, but for the amount of people that own one, you can expect there to be some problems.

Apple's marketing team is amazing, they've made all their products highly desireable, to the point where people who don't even need them will still buy them. It's uncanny.

Then again, apple isn't even smart enough to get the patent on their navigation screen, or click wheel, now both owned by other major corporations (including Microsoft). That's going to cost them.

How much status does an iPod bring? I know some fairly poor people who have them.

I also see some dirt-poor people spending hundreds on shoes they can't really afford and cars they shouldn't have (Escalades). People just have their priorities in the wrong spots, I don't think it proves too much if you have an iPod.

Hell, I probably shouldn't own one, because it's much more money than anyonein my family has to spare, but I do.

Wow, you really don't understand the term "status symbol," do you.

If you're poor, buying an iPod, even if you can barely afford it, makes you seem less poor. Therefore it gives you status. It's also a fashion statement to have an ipod. All the celebrities have them, etc...

And yeah, you should have bought one of the better players for less money. That is, if you're not concerned about the status symbol thing.

I dont listen to THAT much music, as i now have my 4 gig mini, which i bought a couple months back for two hundred bucks, filled with only 3 gigs...one gig left is enough for me, as i find myself taking off songs sometimes...

so i think im going to return my old mini, and buy this one...i go for the thin products...i just bought the Razr...and the black one will go well with the black razr...haha....yeah, for an extra fifty bucks im going to go for the thinner model, its a hell of a lot easier to carry, as far as im concerned, which is good for me...im still going to think about it though...maybe i will buy it in three months when the new iPod comes out

There's no opinions here. People buy apple products ALL THE TIME as a status symbol. Just google the words "iPod Status Symbol" and look at the 10,000 some results.

Very first link I found - apple advertises based on status symbols...

"It always amazes me what their marketing folks can get away with. Only Apple can get away with pushing a crippled product with no navigation capability and turn it in to a marketing slogan of "life is random". Never mind that random shuffle has already been a feature of $20 music players for nearly a decade. It's like the artist that can sell a photo of an invisible woman (a plain old white canvas) for a few hundred thousand dollars."

apple just dominated the entire music player industry

That's a scientific fact... they own over 82% of legal downloads.

Haha, that's so true. I've always thought the shuffle thing was a piece of shit.

A pretty damn expenisve piece of shit, actually. It's probably the worst product Apple has ever made... besides the flower power iMac G3.

well i think all of this is a difference of opinion. apple makes great products.. scott will always think that windows are superior to macs because of what he does with them. for the average user that just browses the net and want less viruses, a mac is for them.. sure you can buy virus protection for windows and not get a virust but some people want a mac for less spyware and want to have less trouble reformating things. compatability is a big thing windows will always win. as far as apple being a status symbol.. it depends on the user. i got an ipod, cause i liked the user interface and it was the easist one to use while some other people just buy it say they own an ipod.

Ugh. I don't even HAVE any anti-virus software and I've never gotten a virus since I bought this computer a year ago. The only way to get viruses is to be totally stupid about what you download.

iPods actually aren't even the easiest to use...my friend came over with this sweet Zen player the other day, and all you have to do to transfer music to it is drag the album onto it via USB...no software, no nothing, then it shows up on your player under the folder name. Really easy stuff and it doesn't have to deal with mistagged stuff (something iTunes is notorious for being a stinker about)

Also, how is it hard to reformat on Windows? All you do is turn off your computer, and put the windows CD in...reinstall...and you're reformated. lol.

I'd rather use iTunes than drag and drop USB.
It's a difference of opinion about status or not, and bringing mac/windows into this topic is stupid, I think. Windows users will always say windows is better, and mac users will always say mac is better.
But yeah, it's not too hard to reformat on windows..

You'd rather have to install the iPod and iTunes software on every single computer instead of carrying around your mp3 player to somebody else's house and filling it with music, regardless of what software, operating system they had?

ok.

haha we have had this debate so many times... but i dont know how to get rid of all this spyware on my computer.. it installs all these hidden folders and stuff i cant get at.. im having a lot of problems. i ran spybot etc and it cant delete them. if i were on a mac i think i would not be having this problem. its not because i want an ibook too fit in with the crowd (even though most people dont have ibooks, so there isnt really a crowd to follow) i just wantone because its easier and stuff dosent get buried deep into my harddrive where i cant delete it.
