i chose lyrics, because it doesn't matter how great your voice is, how amazing that guitar part was, or how 'new sounding' it is. if the lyrics suck ass, than it just makes everything else seem shitty and corny.

I would say the vocals are what catch my attention first but the musicianship and lyrics are what keep my coming back. If I can't stand the vocals then I won't listen to a band. As for good lyrics I usually care about them but when it comes to poppy music I'm extra lenient.

Where are the options for fashion sense, good looks or cool hair?

Not what draws me in, but bad vocals will turn me off a band in an instant. I saw a local band that in places reminded me of Kyuss, Slayer and Verse. All should have been well until the "singer" opened his mouth and sounded like an elephant in labour*.

*I've never actually heard an elephant in labour but I imagine it was about as tuneful as this guy.

It's usually a combination of all of them. Some artists I listen to have sub par lyrics but great musicianship and vice versa. I would like to say creativeness, but again that's not always correct for me.

The thing I voted for was vocals. If a band has a vocalist I don't enjoy, then it is hard for me to get into them. Overall I would say musicianship

MADSTA

Musicianship for the most part.

02/09/09, 12:25 AM
creativeness just beating musicanship for me

then vocals and catchy

dont care for lyrics that much, sure great lyrics really make a song, but unless theyre super lame dont care, im more of a music and melody man

hell one of my fav songs is Rollin by the bizkit and look how stupid those lyrics are!!! :)

catchiness lures me in, but if i get lured in and discover how bad it sucks, i quit.
so lyrics play a big roll in my yay or nay-ing of a band.

I've got to admit catchiness is the top quality that lures me in, but the music can't be catchy alone to keep my attention. It's also gotta be personal and genuine for me to seriously listen to it.

Being creative is what makes a band special, that they can take something and make it their own. Lyrics and vocals come in next for me, respectively, followed by musicianship. It doesn't matter if a band is catchy, but unfortunatly, most of these crappy pop-punk bands think catchiness is the most important thing, it's why they all sound the same.

All of the above, specifically witty, relatable lyrics while still being catchy and having good/decent/well produced vocals.

It depends for me on the 'genre'. For pop, I couldn't give a shit what the lyrics are, just as long as it's catchy. For heavier music, I go for musicianship and for general rock music, I go for lyrics mainly.

All of them are improtant, but I'd say catchiness takes it for me.

If you like Metal, lyrics have no bearing. So that is easily the last choice.

With all the generic stuff out today you gotta be creative.

I kind of feel as if catchiness and creativeness are directly related to the other options available in various ways. Almost too vague of a choice compared to the others, but oh well, moving onward. .
I'm going to flip the question around a bit, giving you what can ruin the band for me instantly, therefore making it the attribute that is most important in a way, and that is vocals.
There seem to be so many bands out there that my friends highly enjoy, and that are "popular" I guess you could say, that I just cannot get into, no matter how much I want to try and like them, I just can't, due to their singer/vocals.
Although obviously everyone likes different singing styles, I have to say I like good vocal range, amazing melody quality, and most importantly being able to put emotion and passion into a voice while singing. There are various singers out there for me that can sing crappy heartless poppy middle school lyrics all they want, but god do they make them sound damn good, therefore I overlook what they are saying, and just how they are saying it (putting emotion into a verse that lyrically is emotionless).
However, I know I've been emphasizing vocals a lot, but, if there is a beautiful voice, with just downright awful musicianship behind it, it does take away from it a significant amount.

Damn, I should stop and get ready for work. Have a good day everyone. Hope you listen to beautiful singing voices today =]

I'd say this is pretty accurate for myself as well.

Lyrics are the most important factor for me. Creativity is a big second, and vocals are fairly important as well. Technical musicianship is valuable but not as important to me as creative songwriting. I think a band with very basic musical skill and a boatload of vision is more interesting than the opposite.

But the overall vibe the music gives is the only thing you can go for.

Totally the vocals--but creativity and musicianship are a must as well. Honestly, everything but the lyrics. If the lyrics are incredibly bad (a la Quietdrive's new album, etc.), then yeah, it's annoying.

But for the most part, they have to be able to sing.

Hard pick but i went with lyrics. If the lyrics aren't good I can't really feel the emotion from the music, but I think you need all of that to really have a band you can listen to for a long time..

I think you could have a really great singer or lyrics, but without good music its probably going to suck.

I went with Musicianship but I can't stand hearing an intro to song and digging it just to have it ruined when the vocals come on. So vocal's are a close second

Vocals, then creativity
Sometimes I love really simple pop punk with a great singer
but overall originality is what I respect the most
