it depends one the style of packaging you want. For the 4 panel cardboard kind thy opens like a book, disc makers was about $900 for 1000 units, plus a bunch of extra stuff. For actual cases though, we went through builtbyicon.com for our ep. Disc makers always has specials going tho and if you live near an office, you can go pick out samples and talk to the people direct.

I highly recommend Ultra Entertainment. They have been cheaper than everyone for a LONG time, and have very personal service. Disc Makers only lowered their prices recently, fuck disc makers. I have heard nothing but bad things about them
www.ultraentertainment.com
I've heard only good things about Disc Makers and it's the only place I'd go. I think it's easier, they have a lot of good offers going all the time and paying like $50 will get your CD on a few of the major online retailers without you having to really worry about it.
I heard good things about Ultra Entertainment as well and some place called Freedom Disc. Don't know much info on either though.

My friend once told me about some sort of machine that duplicates a decent amount of CD's at the same time... someone he knew had one... I believe it also did labels... I'm not sure how much $$$ one of these would set you back, but it sounds pretty worth it, if you'll be doing this often.

We went to Icon as well. The staff is great. They still send me Xmas cards even.
We got 1100 cds for about $1400 when you figured shipping, silk screen and everything else. Best deal we found for the quality.

Nothing irks me more than going to a "cd release" show and the band is selling cheaply made cds with labels printed from their computers. For reals.

Well some of them are local bands trying to get their start

Most bands that do that around my parts do it as a demo or hand out at shows. Not throw a CD Release.

i actually found a really cheap place for a short run duplication. copy cats media. if you guys are too looking to get CDs printed, check 'em out.
I can vouch for Freedom Disc out of PA. Not only have they always matched/beat the cost, the timing and quality are superb. Being a producer, I get to order a lot of CD/DVDs...
Keep it up.
PS. Sure, you could figure it out - http://www.freedomdisc.com/

I'd go with rainbo records- more flexibility, and they do cassettes, dvd's and vinyl as well.

dont bother with CDs. Load your stuff onto CDbaby or tunecore and sell it on iTunes. and for selling at shows.... DropCards are where its at. 500 cards for $250 (+S&H), sell em for $5 a card....you do the math....thats around $2250 in your or your bands pocket. For the people who you know are gonna bitch about no artwork, upload te artwork on your myspace and let people download it. Take advantage of technology....
when you have enough money drop some vinyl.

we used the cards for a while, and we still have a fucking ton of them left. we sold them for $2 and even gave them away, and not even half the people who got them actually used them. we sold way more physical cd's. I like the idea, but people don't seem to be into them just yet.

To me, cdbaby.net sounds like a good deal also.
No matter how much I love a band, I would never buy a DropCard.
If I'm going to pay for music, I want an actual CD.

createspace is pretty amazing you dont need to press 1000 at a time i did a pretty in depth thing with them here.http://musformation.com/2009/06/why-you-never-need-to-press-1000-cds-youll-never-sell-again.html

Abet Disc is where it's at. My band got are CDs done there. They have a really low minimum number of CDs you have to get (only 50), and most places make you pay extra for the stuff they do. (Free Barcode, free color cover, free all color disc printing, etc). Was a pretty solid deal, I would recommend them.
