View Full Version : Which sport is most undeserving of the title Sport?
I think the title says it all, but which sport in your opinion shouldn't be called a sport? Sport being something with a decent known league or in the Olympics, etc

Rhythmic gymnastics?
Basically I'd go with anything that is judged by a panel (gymnastics, skateboarding, figure skating, etc.).
NASCAR, most other racing "sports".....and womens basketball.

Yeah...that used to be where I drew the line of "sport"...if it was entirely subjective and had no true basis for how it was scored (as in a snowboard run can be a 91 or a 93 depending on how the judges see it...whereas a TD is 6 points if you cross the plane no matter what)

I think nascar should be considered a sport. It is physically grueling driving the cars for that long, and it is a competition.

That's exactly the reasoning I have - if something is scored on a subjective criteria then it's a competition. NASCAR and other auto sports are tough calls because while there are set rules and drivers are judged by how they finish, the driver is not the only factor.

yes. I know this. I didn't disagree with any of those, but it's not judged by a panel. I don't know - I'm not a fan of Nascar, but I've always considered it a sport...

agreed on NASCAR. i think that's something where the equipment you use has a direct impact on the outcome. where as in baseball everybody uses the same bats, basketball the same shoes, etc.
and while curling is indeed awesome, i don't think that is a sport, more of a game.

not a Nascar fan, but it is definitely a sport. you'd be naive to think it isn't. an exhausting 3 hour competition every Sunday... 9 months out of the year... not to mention its pretty fucking dangerous... the fan base is bigger than that of American football... a lot of the drivers hate each others guts. how is it not a sport?
as far as shit that isn't a sport but is televised on ESPN... The Spelling Bee, Billiards, and Poker.
No, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is a sport, it takes mental and physical endurance (apparently).

NASCAR isn't a sport because it doesn't require any athleticism. You can be a fat bastard and drive a car for 3 hours. Look at Tony Stewart. He's not huge but he's certainly not in any shape to compete in a real sport.

try driving at 170 mph making turns every 7 seconds without power steering for 180 laps in a racecar thats about 140 degrees on the inside while wearing a thick firesuit... and winning it. No way you can tell me that's any less physically grueling then a 300 pound offensive lineman who's only job is to wrestle with another 300 pound lineman for a few seconds at a time.
Pit crew members go through just as much physical training as any other athelete in order to change 4 tires, fill a gas tank and fix any body damage in 15 seconds or less.

Awesome, so now anything that requires a lot of talent and is difficult is a sport? That is such a bullshit answer. Nobody questions that NASCAR is difficult.

Football, baseball, hockey and basketball are the only sports. Also, remember, the world is flat and women are inferior and pot heads are dumb.
The funny thing is this can be debated FOREVER. No one has proof, only opinions. What is a sport really? Basically a competitive game governed by a set of rules. That's the base. If that's the case then these are all sports. Why get into fights about this? It's pointless. When it boils down to it, it's just entertainment. If it wasn't, then we wouldn't see all these rules changes as time went on. If you don't think that majority of "sports" isn't just "entertainment" then you are completely naive.

with that arguement... are baseball pitchers athletes by anymeans? the fundamentals of baseball is just throwing and catching.
Chris289
02/12/09, 09:58 PM
Now with that, you're beginning the argument of what makes an athlete. In my opinion, an athlete is one who can physically and/or mentally excel in the sport in which they participate. Can I pitch? Yes. Can I throw a fastball at 95+ and paint the corner? Fuck no.

One definition: An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
That rules out spelling, I think. I guess it depends upon what degree of activity constitutes exertion. I'm pretty sure clay pigeon shooting is an Olympic sport and I wouldn't say it requires much exertion, though by no means have I ever participated in the activity, so I can't say for certain. I'd say the same for fishing, playing cards and auto racing.
Some have suggested that being in some type of shape is required and cited basketball, football, baseball and hockey as sports, while hating on NASCAR. I just wanted to point out that, while he's no poster boy for a fitness magazine, Tony Stewart is probably in far better shape than say David Wells and Sidney Ponson ever were.
I'll take the high road and say they're all sports. Better yet, just get rid of the word and call them "competitive activities" to eliminate any gray areas. Sport or not, I won't be in attendance for the chess championships.

Still, what David Wells does requires direct athleticism and physical skill without the aid of mechanical equipment. Tony Stewart is a facilitator, not an athlete.

Say "motorized equipment" and you'd get me to agree. Otherwise rowers would be disqualified because a boat and oars are required. Hell, even Ryan Howard would be a facilitator of sorts, since he needs a bat to hit a home run.

No. Howard's bat speed and the direction he places it in are directly connected to physical effort. That's beyond a stretch.

Explain how the style has changed? Are you telling me that the Bulls teams of the 90's are not built essentially the same, if not exactly the same, as the Spurs, Celtics and Lakers are nowadays?
