View Full Version : Forgotten Debut Albums

Throughout the awesomeness that is history, many bands have exploded onto the scene or gained a massive following with their second album. Many of these times, the bands have taken that album and grown from it, disregarding the first one, for better or for worse. This thread is to discuss, list, and even link (if legal circumstances allow) to a download these debut albums.
What first comes to mind:
Thursday - Waiting
Fall Out Boy - Evening Out With Your Girlfriend
Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island (first official album)
Manchester Orchestra - Nobody Sings Anymore
A Wilhelm Scream - Benefits Of Thinking Out Loud (first album with that name)
I can't think of anymore.

I would define it as first thing that got reasonable exposure.
A cd-r demo, I would not say counts, unless it like, put them on the map. A 12 song studio album that sold a few hundred copies, that would work.

Hey it's no problem. I should've specified more. And I agree with those songs being the strongest. Musically and lyrically they're amazing, and the raw sound of the production adds even more power to those songs.
Pure awesome.
I'm sure they play a couple of songs off their first album, but only the real big hits like "Taste of Ink" or "Buried Myself Alive" or songs like that.
It would be awesome if they were playing "Box Full of Sharp Objects" every night though.

That's so awesome. Refused is awesome, and anything off of the s/t was amazing. The rest of their music is alright, but it really lacks the personality that their first album had, although the direction with Lies was interesting, and not the worst thing they could've done IMO.

Yeah I agree with that. In Love and Death lacked a serious amount of emotion. The songs were fairly decent, but some of it was just not that great at all (the last two songs seriously lacked I thought, and that spoken word was AWFUL), but at least they did it right with one album. Maybe they'll go back to that some day.
And yeah the Anthrax thing is weird. I don't mind them, but I just thought it was interesting that they of all bands were doing a cover of New Noise.

i think you're right about that. they've been around for ages without getting huge. but a part of me kind of likes that. but it does bum me out when people judge the band based on songs like time to waste which is so far from being one of there best. well at least imo anyway

Yeah it's nice that they've never been commercially huge, because that tends to ruin good bands some of the time, but there are times when I wish that more people would like them because that band is just so awesome. Luckily for them, their fans are very die-hard.
And yeah, that album was only alright at best. The Production quality was too clean. I liked Agony and Irony solely because it had similar production quality of From Here to Infirmary, which imo, was their best album production quality-wise.

A&I is definately not as polished as crimson which i think is a good thing. that being said, i never really disliked crimson. its just that i realised that it wasnt their best work. what i find a shame is that people got into them from that album but those people probably wouldnt like any of their earlier work.

This is very true. I won't lie, I didn't get into them until Good Mourning, and that was only after I saw the video for "We've had Enough" on Fuse, but after that I got into their older stuff and it's all so good, especially the songs they release on comps like Jaked on Green Beers and Warbrain.
And you're right, Crimson wasn't a bad album per se, but it was far over-polished, and lacked that "flavor" that Alkaline Trio has. It was a bit too much emphasis on the dark lyrics (which they do so well), and not enough on the music to back them. It was a good album, but it lacks compared to A&I and FHTI.

Jaked on Green Beers is awesome. One of my favorites too. I'd never really heard of them until I got to High School, and I'm so glad that I got more into them. Every album they've made has not in the least bit been disappointing to me, but I was shocked to find out exactly how much of a catologue they had. yeah, they've got quite an extensive discography which is good. it means i never get bored of them because each album is a bit different from all the others. That whole split they did with HWM is great. its much better than the one with one man army. i thought hwm version of bleeder was pretty good too. but my fav song off that is queen of pain which is my fav trio song

I love that song. I think mine might be War Brain, but I really like Donner Party(All Night) a lot too, mostly because of the lyrics.
And you're right, they have very subtle changes in their albums, so I guess that it's not surprising that they went from lyrics like those in Good Mourning to the ones in Crimson, and then changed them from Crimson to A&I. That's actually a very profound statement. I never realized that, but if you think about it, one album is just a subtle change from the last album that gives it a wholly different dynamic.

As am I. I'm astounded that they've managed to grow and evolve over every album without making any of them more radio friendly or mainstream. But then again I guess that's why they never really get that much attention. They have this dynamic about them where they evolve every album and never "sell out" like a vast majority of bands do. It sucks that they don't get attention, but at the same time I'm glad that they're continuing to constantly change while at the same time doing their own thing, regardless of how popular it is.

haha I was with you until this. if you're being controversial just to prove a point, that's fine, but if not I'd like to know what modern band you consider "good" pop rock.

Fair enough, but he did have a point after that, and however much you disagree with it, it didn't warrant that response.

The genre's pretty ambiguous, but speaking of artists that generally blend mainstream elements of Pop and Rock together in an enjoyable package:
The first two Weezer albums, The first two Rilo Kiley albums, Billy Joel's The Stranger, Fleetwood Mac, Blonde post-Parallel Lines, The Shins, certain New Pornographer albums, certain Cheap Trick albums, The Kins, The Cardigans, St. Vincent, The Delgados, The Fiery Furnaces, certain Camera Obscura albums, the first Islands album, most of Lou Reed's '70s albums, Mirah, and many others.
Fair enough, but he did have a point after that, and however much you disagree with it, it didn't warrant that response.
AP always needed referees. Thank you.

The genre's pretty ambiguous, but speaking of artists that generally blend mainstream elements of Pop and Rock together in an enjoyable package:
The first two Weezer albums, The first two Rilo Kiley albums, Billy Joel's The Stranger, Fleetwood Mac, Blonde post-Parallel Lines, The Shins, certain New Pornographer albums, certain Cheap Trick albums, The Cardigans, Phantom Planet, St. Vincent, The Delgados, and many others.

I'm sorry that I think it'd be nice if people weren't dicks.

I'm one of the awful elitists of the board. I'm just trying to maintain my cred.

I have a copy, bought it on eBay for $30
Could have bought something better with that money. Like cereal.

What you did there, I see.
Ummmm...they had a self-titled before Static Prevails. And most people don't know Jimmy Eat World outside of The Middle. People don't know that Clarity is a legendary album. I mentioned something to some people about the webcast of the Clarity rehearsal and was like, "you won't care, they probably won't be playing the middle"
Chase This Light came out before you were a teenager so chill. The band and many fans alike agree that before Static Prevails, they were terrible. Jim has said he would like to forget that first record, as would I -- so bad.

I don't know that either, but your definition of "classic" is varies heavily from mine and nothing Jimmy Eat World has ever done transcends fun Pop Rock.
