I was listening to a podcast this morning and they're talking about Jurassic Park and I was thinking, what are the classic movies of our generation. I understand that there are a wide range of ages on this board, but I'm talking about people born from 1980 to 1990.
So, I'll start this off with...
Jurassic Park
Toy Story
Back to the Future (um, I'll just pick the first one)
and I'll throw a controversial one in there...
Mortal Kombat

Yesssssssss! Hahaha, I view a lot of "horrible" movies as classic just because they sort of hold the essence of movies of that time.
There are a lot of horror movies from the 80s that I consider classics as well, just because when I think of that era that's all I can think of. There was a certain level of cheesiness during the 80s that they'll never be able to capture in film again.

That movie blows so hard, but I still watched it three times in one day when it first came out. But I would not consider it a classic because it doesn't stand the test of time. It's not a movie I can back and watch now. It's so bad in every aspect. The only redeeming quality of that movie is it's theme song.

Classic in a sense that every regular person loves them or classic in a sense that that they are lauded by critics, fans, Hollywood, etc.? Mainstream films? I guess I'll name mainstream films that most people love that could be considered classics from our era:
Drama
Fight Club
Titanic
Pulp Fiction
The Shawshank Redemption
American History X
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Comedy
Dumb and Dumber
Billy Madison
The Sandlot
Home Alone
Wayne's World
American Pie (original)
All things Kevin Smith
Dazed and Confused
Horror
Scream
Candyman
From Dusk 'til Dawn
Army of Darkness
The Silence of the Lambs
The Sixth Sense
The Frighteners
Either or. For me a lot of classics of my time are just ones that are extremely representative of what period of movies were like. I'm not big on "typical" classic films, meaning the type that get Oscars and critics love, etc.
Your list are all great picks.

If you're talking about cheesiness then it's still unforgivable you put Mortal Kombat up and not Street Fighter.

I was never that into Street Fighter. I definitely watched Mortal Kombat a lot more.

MK was clearly the better movie and SF but SF is by far the better game.

Agreed.
I never knew the special moves on MK...I just mashed buttons and hoped for the best.

It makes me sad thinking about what the classics must be for people born between 1990 and 2000.

I have to say that no matter how many times I try and watch anything by Kevin Smith Im bored out of my mind within 10 mins. Clerks is one of the most god awfully boring pieces of shit Ive ever had to sit through.

Think of what your younger siblings would answer to this question. And to answer the original question again, I say Pretty Woman.

That's why I asked, I was curious as to what they would say, I know for sure Lord of the Rings and maybe the first Matrix? It'd be interesting to see their answers.

I've been catching up on a lot of "classics" lately, so more lists would be appreciated.

I'm more of a drama movie fan so ...
Titanic
There Will Be Blood
No Country For Old Men
Jurassic Park
Saving Private Ryan
Pulp Fiction
Lion King
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
Toy Story
The Matrix
Shawshank Redemption
Men In Black
The Departed
28 Days Later
Scream
American Pie
Fight Club
But in my opinion The Departed is the best film that has been made in my life time.

Knocked up
Kill Bill

True Romance

Not saying these are all my fav movies but I feel like most people around my age would know these movies and think they were def a big part of the generation.
I completely agree with the people who said American Beauty, Titanic, Kevin smith's movies, casino and toy story.
