Out of the 4, Spanish, French, German, and Latin, which would be the easiest to take?

From what I've been told, Spanish and Latin sound the easiest. A friend who was trying to learn it told me that French has like 7 verb tenses (whether this is true or not, I'm not certain!) and she said it was very very hard. I'm learning German, and it's quite difficult. I also speak a bit of Spanish, and I picked that up pretty easily.

Spanish. Also, come on, what are you ever going to use Latin for?
Also, poster above, I think Spanish has a similar number of tenses. past present future + subjuntivo (I'm guessing this is subjunctive in English) past present and future. Not to mention all the imperfect ones. And the commands.
Probably Spanish or Latin. I'm in Arabic right now, and let me just advise against it.

I think Spanish is kinda easy. If you're wanting to go into any medical/science, then take Latin. I thought French was pretty easy though too. French and Spanish have very similar formats.

German!! It's really similar to English. That was an easy class. I loved it.

don't pick french. I'm from ontario and had to move to quebec (my dads in the military). I've been here for 2 years now and i still can't seem to pick it up.
Its true about the verb stuff, they are very hard (at leaste to me) to learn and memorize.

Latin would be virtually useless in the real world. Spanish or French are your best bets, but in the end I would pick French. But that's just a personal preference.

6 verb tenses actually. Though I think all Romance languages are that way.
Spanish.
Not to hijack the thread, but I have to take a foreign languages class for two semesters. Do you think I should pick the one I'm most interested in(French), or the one that would be most useful(Spanish)?

Take Spanish, unless you plan on being rich, which in that case, you should take German or French.

Well, Quebec French isn't really at all like France French. I speak French and when I worked @ Disney World, Quebecians(?) would need me to translate and I would have no idea what the heck most of what they said meant.

I'd say Spanish. I've heard some horrible things about Latin.

Latin would be good for etymology.

02/18/09, 07:18 AM
If you have a background in either French or Spanish then the other one is easy to pick up
I speak Flemish (Dutch) and I only started learning Spanish after I'd studied the other languages (and English) for years, but I think I can say that Spanish is the easiest to learn if you don't have a background in any of them.
German is more similar to English, but the grammar is more difficult.
Latin is great, though the grammar isn't easy, but less useful unless you want to go in the medical direction.
French definitely isn't the easiest. (sentence construction is quite difficult)

I'm loving Arabic. I guess it depends on the teacher, class and individual. If all three aren't right it can suck really hard.

I'm a Spanish major and it's probably the easiest. All romance languages are difficult though because the structure and grammar is completely different than English. Generally speaking, though, of those, Spanish accent is easiest to pick up. So I'd say Spanish. BUT, if you have a hard time with accents, do the bilingual world a favor and DON'T take a language. Nothing gets on my nerves faster than people who speak Spanish with a bad accent. I cringe and my soul dies a little bit.

Taking foreign languages at an American High School is a joke.
I had Latin for 5 years in Germany, 4 years of English and 2 years of Spanish and German is my native tongue.
So when I was in America I thought I'd add French to that, we seriously in half a year only learned to say our names and the numbers from 1-10.
Needless to say I was the best in the class. But there where actually people who didn't pass.

I took Latin for 4 years, it was really easy because of our teacher but we didn't actually learn anything, she tested us on easy stuff and gave us A's. If you have a teacher that really wants to test you on it, Latin is super hard. I'd go with Spanish since you can actually use it.

Spanish is definitely easiest.
I have taken Spanish and French for three years each. French is really fun and cool sounding, but super hard. And Spanish is easier to pick up.
So if you are going for easy, definitely take Spanish

I take Spanish, but German is so close to English that I assume that it would be the easiest.
Do you even know any German? Are you saying this simply because English is a "Germanic" language? As someone somewhat fluent in German, with experience in Spanish and a slight understanding of French, I have to say Spanish is the easiest, hands down. I love German, but the grammar is a lot more complicated than English and Spanish, as there are 4 declensions for nouns and adjectives (the latter of which also change depending on the word they precede), and the sentence structure can become troublesome based on the stipulations on verb placement. Also, German prepositions are absolute hell.

And I love Spanish. haha

well when i started high school, i was going to take spanish. but i cant do the damm tongue roll. so i took french, and i think it's really easy. i have like a 99.1% in the class :)
but i wish my school tought latin. i think that would be so much fun to learn, concidering the fact that more than half our language is derived from it.
The correct answer is Latin. It makes you significantly more capable with English and gives you a massive advantage if you plan to ever study French, Latin, Italian, or any of the other romance languages.

Out of the 4, Spanish, French, German, and Latin, which would be the easiest to take?
Spanish is the most practical of the four and will most likely become mandatory in the future. However, Latin is helpful when learning other languages.
Personally, I'm taking the Spanish route.

Have you considered what career/ job you want? So many American jobs are begin outsourced to India, China and Japan, If you're doing something technical you want to look at Japnese or Mandarin probably.
If you're just doing it for school credit then you want to do something easy. I live in Texas, so it's easiest and it makes the most sense for me to learn Spanish. But in my area we speak a lot of Spanglish anyway, so it's that much easier.

German is closest to English. I know people who have studied Spanish for more than four years and haven't really learned much, they can only hold really simple conversations. I'm assuming you could get farther with German.

Not when you actually learn to speak real Spanish. You're referring to "cognates"- which quickly deplete in number once you are in a higher level Spanish course and not just memorizing nouns.
I took Spanish and hated it. If you can do the speaking do Spanish. If you only want to memorize do Latin.
French is SO EASY.
You should take it. I did grade 8 to 11 in French and kept my grades in the low 90s without doing much work. My pronunciation isn't amazing, but it is easy to learn the verbs IMO (contrary to what other people in this thread have been saying).

Spanish is classified as the simplest language by the US Government. But since you're from Ohio i'd recommend French and then Spanish. But for the broadness, Latin is good if you'd like to learn those languages faster when you're older.
Latin is definitely not a bad thing to choose as previous posters have said. It's incredibly helpful if you want to learn other romantic languages.
And I'd like to see where Spanish is listed as the simplest language. I'm not necessarily calling you out, but I don't know if that's something you can really establish. I have a knack for learning languages, and Spanish was the easiest for me to pick up. Anybody else speak Spanish fluently?

Out of those, I can only speak French and Spanish.
Personally, I found Spanish a LOT easier to pick up, and I hear a lot of people say the name.
I have some friends that have been taking German classes since they were really young, and they still have a lot of difficulty with it, so I'm kind of intimidated by it, and Latin is kind of a silly class to take if you want to be able to communicate with others, however, it would be really interesting, just because it helped develop a lot of the languages spoken today.
I'd say Spanish, I LOVE IT.
And the Hispanic culture is really amazing too. :)

I'm taking French next year. Spanish would be smarter based on the area where I live, but I think French is a beautiful language.
my spanish final is tomorrow. not sure if i just suck at it or if my teacher sucks at teaching but i can't focus and i need to learn 8 sections, 4 tenses and about 200 vocab words.
I'm taking French starting next semester. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

and then all other languages are very easy to learn =)
