I went to the Black Sheep Cafe last night (valentine's day) to watch some "fast hardcore" bands that some friends were talking about, and I was rather surprised.
The show was a three band show, so it was a short one. Matt Lucas for Coroner opened, which is nothing to really talk about, but as xTake Controlx sat up I knew I was in for at least a good loud heartfelt performance.
They brought quite a bit of energy, and the crowd really enjoyed them. There was dancing all around. People came up from saint louis and out from peoria. I believe the black teeth guys were there to support.
The main thing that stuck out about take control was their rhythm section. The bassist was rocking a music man five string, and the tones he had were so thick and he was beating the shit out of those strings. They have a real thrashy sound mixed with a bit of a blocky rhythm style reminiscent of everything I ever loved about old school Refused. I would check them out if you are really into hardcore.
The last band was Rattletooth from Louiseville, KY. This band is LOUD. Thier guitarist was running a jcm 800 and a traynor, and thier bassist was definitely using a RAT distortion box.
They had some exceptional energy. The bassist was full throttle rock and they reminded me of old school Secretary days with Wil Spent playing bass, except louder, ruder, and maybe a little less concern with hair.
This band is one of those few bands that I've witnessed that almost made me lose control of my bowls.
They were raw, thier singer was in your face, and they when it was over, it left me aching for more, even though my ears weren't just ringing, they were pulsing.
I give the show 3 out of 5 stars, beings that there wasn't a worthy opener.

I love the DIY ethic bands like this have, and I totally suggest supporting them.
unfortunately rattletooth misplaced thier merch the night before or I would be the proud owner of a new record.
Much love.
