no replies about such a great album? been listening to a lot of the stones lately, along with a lot of blues & blues inspired sounds. this era of the stones music is incredibly awesome. my favourite tunes from this album are "midnight mile", "sister morphine" & the essential "wild horses". & who can forget those dirty blues/rock riffs that make richards such an immortal in musical history. this album never goes out of style

Haha, I'm a little shocked too at the lack of replies. I agree though, this is probably the Stones' strongest era. My favorite songs on this album would be "Moonlight Mile", "Dead Flowers", "Wild Horses" of course, and "I Got the Blues". Whole thing is solid start to finish though.

Never been a big Stones fan for whatever reason. That song doesn't really inspire me to change my mind.

Agreed. Two of my favorite Stones songs. I like Townes Van Zandt's cover of "Dead Flowers" alot too. Steve Earle does a pretty good version of it as well.

I've had a hard time deciding which of these albums I enjoy more. Exile can get a little long to listen through, at times, and feels a tad top-heavy, but that's just me. Still a great album.

If I were to rank my favorite Stones albums, It'd probably be:

Sticky Fingers = Exile > Let it Bleed > Beggar's Banquet > Goats Head Soup

:highfive: I prefer the late 60's/early 70's Stones to the early-mid 60's Stones but Aftermath is a good one too. As is December's Children. I remember when I first got Goats Head Soup, I was in 7th grade and got a huge kick out of "Star Fucker" hahah.

hahaha some people just don't know something so good, even when it's right there in front of them. this is probably my favourite stones album, followed by beggars banquet, let it bleed, then exile on main st. but that changes a lot haha. it's albums like sticky fingers that really showcase the real heart & soul of rock'n'roll, that strong traceable decent from the blues, that honest feel of country tones added to such rockin', & even sometimes very sombre tunes. if only more bands reconnected with their musical history, who knows just what might inspire them, instead of only tracing music back to the birth of blink 182...

Haha, sad but true. Oh well, what can you do but hope people wise up.

My ranking changes alot too when it comes to my favorite Stones album haha. They're all so good in their own unique ways. Sure, the bulk of their recent work isn't much to speak of, but damn, those 60's-70's albums are gold. (I still need to check out A Bigger Bang though)

I wish more people on the board were into them and realized how truly vital they are. Anyway, thanks for helping keep this thread alive. knew I could count on you! haha

Let it Bleed, Beggar's Banquet and Exile on Main St. I just love that bluesy rhythm that paves the way throughout Exile and Banquet has this raw quality to it I love. Bleed just has my all-time favorite songs.

It's kind of funny to me that the Stones, unlike the Beatles, really didn't get kicking until after the Beatles split. That's when they began to continuously releases album after album of quality material. Even the albums that didn't spin off a ton of hit singles are still good records in their entirety. Tattoo You might be the last full record I can admit to liking, but they had a few singles in the decades to follow that were alright.

I'd agree on all thise points. The bluesy swagger to all those albums is top notch. Richards is such a fucking great guitarist, but he doesn't get quite as much recognition as he deserves (I feel like that's the case, anyway) because he doesn't completely shred.

Agreed on this as well. Ha. Their material released during the 60's is good too but I think they really hit their peak in the 70's. Some of their later career albums such as Steel Wheels and Bridges To Babylon are pretty bad and have maybe one or two good songs each, but I agree that Tattoo You is a solid album.

It's great to see this thread.

I've run into too many people that are too reactionary with them because they're old and lame now. "Fuck those guys!" and so on...
:-)

Yeah I know what you mean. I got that all the time when I was on my steady diet of Beatles in the 6th grade. "Oh my god that band is so OLD". Ugh. I mean, yeah, sixth grade but still. The weird thing was that once I hit like, freshman year in high school, all those old bands I loved all throughout jr high were suddenly the cool bands to like. That was always pretty weird to me.

I'd say Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Dead Flowers, and Moonlight Mile are the immediate standouts for me.
Cool cool. Those are my favorites as well. Just add "I Got The Blues" to the list because I love that one as well.

Yeah, like I said in my response to Chris, Keith is an excellent guitarist.

It's definitely out of place, ha. But if you grew up on it, that's understandable. I wouldn't call it better at all, but if you enjoy it more on a personal level, there's nothing wrong with that.

"Play With Fire" isn't an album. It's a song from their album Out Of Our Heads.

I listened to nothing but the Beatles and clean blink-182 until I was in middle school, which is when I discovered Green Day and Avril Lavigne. Hahahahaha. I agree on the fact that in high school, classic rock became trendy. I looked around and saw Beatles and Doors shirts, and was seriously confused.

Sweet.

Yeah, exactly! I think the t-shirts had a lot to do with it. I'm not sure when exactly it happened, but one day I just noticed "woah, you know?....everyone's been wearing classic rock t-shirts lately". I'd like to think some of them legitimately enjoyed and appreciated the music but there had to be a few who were making some kind of fashion statement. But who knows.

As much as I hated "Across The Universe", at least that move helped spark a lot of interest in the Beatles' music. Maybe not for the right reasons, in some cases, but still, I liked that more kids were at least aware.

Yeah I think there's some Parsons influence on there. Him and Keith used to hang out all the time and would often shoot up together. If anything I think that the Stones were an influence on Parsons but I don't doubt that he inspired them as well.
