My headphones just stopped working on me. I can hear through one side, but not the other.

Those were the pair I had.
I don't want to get them again, they have broken twice on me so far.
Anyone have a recommendation for quality headphones? Price doesn't really matter. I just want a pair that sounds excellent, and is durable

i get the $20 sony studio headphones. they sound great, fit nice, and are durable. and if they do break, it doesnt cost u tons of money for new one. dont let the price fool u, they are pretty good, not as good as like 50,60 100 dollar ones, but they do the job for me.

I go through an average of 2 pairs of headphones a month. Therefore, I only by cheap ones

Those probably won't do for me. I'm some what picky when it comes to sound. $80+ usually fit my preference of sound.

Never buy Skullcandy unless you get a warranty. I went through 2 pairs of Skullcrushers within 3 months; they're made really cheap. Right now I have Panasonic RP-HTX7 headphones. They're only around $70 and have great sound. I've had them since September and havn't had any issues so far.. and they look really badass ;)

They do not cancel out noise as well, but the quality of sound coming out is very comparable to the ones you had. Also they are a bit more durable. I have messed mine up pretty bad and they still work. Also, the cable that hooks into your iPod is replaceable. Mine broke once and I went to the Bose store and they replaced it for free. Lemme find a link.

I never compared them side by side. But I bought them after my first Bose ones (the same ones you just had) and I have never been disappointed. The only thing I really noticed was that they didn't cancel out noise as well, but they were more comfortable. So it is a trade off. I prefer the comfort after having used both for extended periods of time.
Audio wise, they are probably the same if not slightly better.

The main difference I noticed was clarity, at least in the audio department. But I am a music snob, so stuff like that matters to me. Also, comfort was a BIG factor. With the amount of time I spend a day with them on, comfort really is what sold them.

I use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT880s through a headphone amp when I'm at home (they're far too large to actually walk down the street with, but great sound). When I'm out I use a pair of Sennheiser PX200s. They retail for about $70, but you can get them on Amazon for about $50. Having used quite a few pairs in their price range before, they're by far the best quality for the price. The PX200s are closed to block noise, but the PX100s are an open model of the same pair, and a little cheaper.
Don't get Bose, Sony, Skullcandy or whoever. Not that they're particularly bad (except the Skullcandies, I have no idea why those are popular), but more often than not you're paying more for the brand and not the quality.

go to best buy and pick up a pair of logitech headphones -- dont bother with the clear chat or the chat comfort or whatever the fuck they call it just pick up the stereo headphones with a regular 1/8 inch jack. they cost 25 dollars, and i have heard 100 dollar headphones that dont sound as good as that pair, let alone the fact they work with an mp3 player (hence why i stopped buying USB headphones).

Shure SE210 (Sound Isolating Earphone) - Were recommended to me by a friend, and they sound fantastic. You can get them for a little under $100 on Amazon. I paid $10 extra for the black ones :-|
I currently have them on rotation with two other pairs. The others are a pair of Koss Porta Pro (great sound, a tad too heavy on the bass), which are my preferred choice when I'm at home, but I don't really like wearing them outside because they aren't very practical (and they mess up my hair!)
The third is an old iRiver pair of earbuds, quite solid when it comes to sound, but impractical when jogging and doing stuff because they fall out quite easy, and the chord isn't long enough. Use them when going to sleep though, because I find them more comfortable then than the in-ear ones from Shure.
I used to just stick with the ones that came with my iPod and iPhone, but after realizing the difference in sound quality compared with other alternatives I just tossed them in the trash!

Once you get the chance, I definitely recommend going for it. Not exactly loaded myself being a student and all, but when you do most of your listening through headphones it's absolutely worth just eating bread for a week ;) Makes for a much more enjoyable experience, and you might even find that you'll hear much of the music you like, or even stuff you thought you didn't like, in a completely different way.

I've gone thru about 15-20 earphones in the course of about a year. I hate it when they lose sound on one side! I've had Sony, Skullcandy, RCA, and many, many others. They all broke.
Until one day I desperately needed some earphones so I got some for $5 @ Blockbuster.
They've lasted for 2 months. And they're still workin. Only I went bck and got me some white ones that would match my myTouch. So I don't use my first pair anymore.
Anyhow, I doubt they're available @ every Blockbuster, but if u find them. Get them. I was shocked.

If you have a Microcenter around you, buy them from there and pay the extra whatever it costs for the insurance. That way, you can always bring them back and get a new pair if they break on you (which they will). That being said, I use the Skullcandy Mutton Chops headphones. The sound is decent enough and the cord isn't like rubber or anything, it's some type of material covering the wires which for some reason works really well and doesn't get caught on things. Actually, I did. Or did you just choose $20 as an arbitrary number with no particular value just to prove your (rather misguided) point?
Any reasonably priced pair of headphones is going to offer better sound quality, even with an iPod, than cheap earbuds. Even with that source the difference is going to be enormous.

What are you actually comparing your ipods to? And are you telling me that the quality jump I experienced going from Skullcandy Ink'd to Head-Direct RE2 and THEN to Etymotic ER4S was all in my head? If so, it's still worth the $115 dollars to me.
Old rule of thumb: Whatever your listening "station" is (in this case it's iPod + headphones), at least half your budget should go on your speakers (in this case headphones.) So if you're spending anywhere from $80 to $400 dollars on your amp/source (iPod) then aren't you the stupid one for only spending $20 on your headphones?

You people aren't fucking listening. I never said the sound quality wouldn't improve with ipods. It drastically will. But that doesn't stop ipods from playing compressed pieces of shit. So if you're going to go for some high quality headphones (and get bose), you'd better have a better music than an ipod to justify your purchase. And to zonto up there, I have ipod buds for my ipod, but I have a good quality cd player and an expectinal surrond sound setup with a record player. I promise your skullcandies don't sound better than that.

You can use lossless format music with ipods though, yeah?

I didn't know ipods were capable of that. Thats a step in the right direction. Mine is very very old and probably can't handle all that fancy technology.

Yeah you lost me when you started going on about compressed music. That's not to say I don't listen to compressed music for the most part when on the go, mostly to preserve space. The difference between a properly ripped and encoded V0 VBR file, while still noticeable, isn't huge enough to justify the additional space it takes on my iPhone and iPod, at least with the headphones I have at my disposal. Although when home and with laptop access, I listen mostly to FLAC and ALAC (lossless).
And I certainly agree that listening to music on a proper stereo is the right way to go, but when you're a student and your accomodations don't really allow for playing music above a certain volume, headphones are a decent substitute. But I can promise you that when I'm out of Uni and start chasing the dollar, quite a bit of what I earn will go towards my stereo budget ;)

Yeah, I have the newer (but not newest) ipod classic, so since it has so much space I've been putting all the music I have a solid copy of into lossless format.

I'll definitely take advantage of that technology when my ipod dies and I'm forced to upgrade. I still have a 30 gig from when 30 was the largest size. I love my stereo setup but I can't exactly take that to Starbucks with me to read.

I also often play live and bose in-ears are the only way to go for that.
If you're recommending Bose, you have a gross misunderstanding of proper sound and instead prefer a bloated, colored presentation that isn't true to the original recording. In fact, they design Bose in-ears to PLAY compressed music, hence their coloration and "non-fatiguing" sound.
Again, I just really question your credibility because you don't seem to be able to express what you're trying to say in a coherent way. Stop swearing. And please learn how to read my posts the same as I read yours. I don't own Skullcandies anymore. I asked what you played your music on and you said a "good quality CD player and an expectinal surrond sound setup with a record player." That means nothing to me. What brands and models? What DAC chips do they use? Which turntable, cartridge, etc...? Which model of speakers? Why do you have surround sound to listen to stereophonic recordings?
And the necessary question: Have you ever double-blind tested a LAME v0 mp3 with the original *.wav file or lossless file from the CD? I think that you're assuming when we say iPod we mean iTunes 128kbps AAC files. That's not the case. My 30GB iPod plays lossless just fine, and I'm relatively certain if you have the most recent firmware yours should too.
If you play live, you should look into Ultimate Ears custom molded monitors or, better yet, JH Audio JH-13s.

Has any got a pair of Grado's. I saw someone had earlier. Last year I spent £35 on a pair of decent headphones and was really impressed by the increase of sound quality (I used to use the Sony In-ear type ones that retail at about £20). However now I am really considering taking the next step and moving up to the low-end Grado (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grado-SR60-Hifi-Headphones-Which/dp/B0006DPMU4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1252855083&sr=8-2). Anyone got any advice on whether it's worth it? Or, knowing how much I want to spend, up to, or preferably, slightly less than £90, recommend a different pair?

SR60s are a great entry into the Grado lineup. Check Head-Fi.org forums for good deals on used pairs too. You might find that you can even spend a tad more and get 80s or 125s for a price within your budget since they're used. If you've got $150 (USD) to work with that can get you quite a bit.
Check out Sennheiser HD280s, 25-II, or even AKG 271 Studios. A lot of factors can be considered here: do you want a closed or open design? What type of sound signature do you prefer? Is true portability (aka being able to fold them up) a concern? etc...
EDIT: For information, I"ve never heard any of these 'phones I've recommended, only posting what I've read about. My Grado HF2 will be my first full size headphone so I'll try to remember to post impressions here once they arrive.
I just want to start off by saying that I have the absolute WORST luck with headphones. I hardly even use them due to the fact that I plug my iPod into my car.
Ok, so I after my white iPod headphones came apart, I probably bought about 4 Gum headphones in a row. Each one lasted maybe a month or 2 before the earpiece came apart.
Then I got a pair of the Bose In-ear for my birthday. They broke after around 6 months. They were 100 dollar headphones. I took them back and made them give me another pair. That pair broke after 2 months. I got one more pair and they broke in 2 months. I will never own another pair of those things again.
Then I just bout the Skullcandy Smokin Buds. The sound quality sucks, they hurt my ears, and the left bud just broke. I've had them for 3 months.
I'm probably going to get the Full Metal Jackets, and if they break, I'm just going to buy some standard Apple Headphones. They seem to be the most durable.

I put them in my pocket. I don't get it either. I swear, I don't do anything that nobody else doesn't do. It's always a different problem too. It's not always the same. Sometimes, it shorts out at the plug, or one of the ear buds will come apart. I don't get it either.

Cheers for the tips. To give more details, portability isn't a concern as they will always be used in the house, so really they can be open backed as sound leakage won't be a massive concern either. As a sound-novice I'm not sure what sound signature I'd want, I have usually prefered to have an above average bass response when using a custom EQ.
I still think I am leaning towards the Grado's but now I am wondering whether I can justify the extra expense for a pair of SR80i's or even up to the 125s

Grados aren't usually described as "bass heavy" phones, however they are described as glorious for rock. Again, I won't know until I get my pair in about a week.
Did you check out the head-fi.org forums for good used prices? You can try out a pair off there from another headphone aficionado and if you don't like it, turn around and sell it for what you paid or maybe a tiny bit less. I've seen used SR225s go for $150 there before.
I use the over-ear Skullcandy Hesh. Yeah, I know Skullcandy is apparently "teh suk", but they were only 50 bucks, and I'm happy with them, very much so. The bass is slammin', and it all sounds clear to me! Definitely beats the hell outta the mediocre in-ear skull candies. Although if you're listening to them loudly (they're not enjoyable unless you do =P), the people next to you had better be prepared to hear what you're listening to just as well as you are

I have Sennheiser earbuds that retail for about £30 ($49ish) that I got for free from my university (ahh, the perks of being a music management student). Before that I had Skullcandy ones and they broke really easily and the sound quality was really not that good.
I got given a pair of the Skullcandy Hesh headphones (these: http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/images/skullcandy-hesh-white.jpg) for my birthday last year and they're alright but nowhere near what they're cracked up to be and they leak sound like crazy. I'm dying for a pair of Sennheiser HD-555 headphones though. I really want some great quality ones.

I'm currently using a Bose set around-the-ear set that I've had for about a year-and-a-half, and have already had to superglue each ear piece back to the headset. The left one twice.
When I can afford it, I'm looking to get a set of these:
