Versus The Ocean - If You Only Knew
Release Date: January 13, 2009
Record Label: Take Over Digital
When Versus The Ocean added me on myspace, I thought that this was just another one of those shitty local bands trying to get their music out there. But Versus The Ocean is quite the opposite of a local post-hardcore band begging for an add on myspace.
If Only You Knew starts with a slow piano part that is quickly drowned out by growled vocals, a skilled drummer, and catchy guitars. Versus The Ocean sticks to this formula throughout the whole album. "Take Cover!" is another fast tempo song with a good mixture of both clean vocals and screams. In "Resting in the Palm of your Hand", Versus The Ocean showcases their great musicianship combined with great vocals. This track, hands down, is the best track on the album. However, because Versus The Ocean follows the same scream-sing-repeat formula, this album may become quite repetitive. "Between Me and You, An Illusion" is one of Versus The Ocean's slower songs, and the change of pace gives you a break from the rest of If You Only Knew.
Versus The Ocean has put out a solid release in the post-hardcore genre and should look to improve on the little things that brings this album down. I'll be looking forward to bigger and better things from this band in 2009.
