So I was poking around on Modlife, I had never been to the site before, I signed up for an account but then I realized most of the stuff on there can only be accessed when you pay for a premium account. Its like $6 a month or something.
Does anyone else think that's kind of weird that they are charging for what I can only assume can be medicore content from medicore bands, most of which are fairly inactive (Finch, The Color Fred) or I have never heard of (Runner Runner, The Silent Comedy). I would check these bands out if I didn't have to pay for it!
I know it isn't a big deal but I take issue with it for a few reasons. First, I find it kind of self-serving for these bands to feel like you should have to pay to have some minor social network interaction with them. Second, ModLife bands are doing themselves a disservice by charging fans and potential fans for what is essential a PR outlet for the them. Third, when I read all of the messaging on the site I don't get any sort of clear indication of what I am paying for!!!
So is anyone a paying member of ModLife??? I am curious to know if people are paying for this?

Tom said that he meant for Modlife to one day become something that helps bands put out more free music. You gotta realize that these bands are the members' only real income. So an ambitious band like AvA does this in the hope that one day this will become a good source of revenue, which will enable them to put out free music.
I feel like the site is an attempt to start to move away from record labels. It's meant to help bands promote themselves and whatnot.
It's also a really new site, so there's not much stuff on their. I have a feeling that in the future, if Tom sticks with it, and more bands decide to pick up on it, it could become something great and worth it.
As for the content, I only pay attention to the AvA one. I don't pay for it, but I know they have a shit load of video updates, Modcams (where the band basically talks directly to the people), and other shit. They did also once stream one of their concerts on their.
Apparently NASA is getting in on it to, which I think would really help them.

I would bet Tom made that up. NASA is government funded and run by it. I highly doubt they will do anything with it. Especially because Tom is a UFO/conspiracy theorist.

I am going to assume that you are talking about the lesser known bands when you refer to it being their "only source of income". Having said that, a lesser known band with ModLife being their only source of income (something I highly doubt) is not going to be in the financial situation to be doing things like recording exclusive remixes, exclusive b-sides, or even doing heavy touring (which would fall into things like exclusive in-stores and meet and greets). I think it would be much more beneficial for the lesser known bands to give that contact away for free as a way to get people going to their shows and buying merchandise. I am certainly not going pay money to subscribe to a band I have never heard of.
So if you subscribe to ModLife, lets say you subscribe for three months (the minimum subscription available) to the Finch ModLife, and in 3 months they don't post shit. Do you get your money back???
Now Tom and Blink 182 are different stories, they have an immense following. More importantly than that, they are personalities their demeanor has always been entertaining. I have always found the DVDs they released and shows they perform to be funny and amusing. I would understand if they wanted to charge for a weekly 2 hour video podcast where they basically just goofed off or whatever (I still wouldnt pay for it, but I can understand them charging). But I think that charging kids $7 a month (per band!!) for the off-chance that the band may do something cool is kind of crazy don't you think?

People are paying for it. A decent amount. But nowhere near what they were hoping for.
I like how you think NASA getting involved would help them. NASA would help Metro Station if the two teamed up.

Yeah. It's what I think. Doesn't mean I have any doubts about it. The only doubts I have are whether or not they are really launching a page like Tom said.

I agree with most of this. But it's the bands choice whether or not they want to charge their fans, not Tom's/Modlife's. Then it's the fan's choice if they want to pay it or not.
I mean, if people are paying for you to give them exclusive stuff (like the videos, signings at shows, early access to ticket sales) and you never post videos, or have any events, then people are going to stop paying for it. That's part of being in a band, marketing it.
The fact that it's connected with Tom, AvA, and possibly blink-182 is a big marketing thing for these bands. The smaller bands know that people who follow any of those 3, will know about Modlife, and go on there and see Finch, The Silent Comedy, or any of the others, and get fans from it. Example: I'm a pretty big fan of Timmy Curran's music now. As a surfer, I knew who he was, but never knew he did music. I probably would've never known his music existed if it wasn't for his Modlife profile.

I kinda meant that it's pretty obvious that any aid from NASA would help them a shitload.
