Last I checked Oscars were given based on acting skill, not pity. Ledger did an exemplary job in Dark Knight but I think any other actor nominated displayed more acting prowess in their roles.

Unfortunately, all of the award programs seem to weigh pity as a factor this year. I think Hoffman and Brolin clearly had better roles, but we'll see.

In my opinion, the best supporting male performance of the year wasn't even nominated; Bill Irwin in Rachel Getting Married.
