Papa Roach -Metamorphosis
Record Label: Geffen/Interscope
Release Date: March 24, 2009
That's right -- Papa Roach, a.k.a. "Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort, etc." The latest incarnation of dirty, grimy hard rock with black nail polish sheen eeks out a chart-topper every few years, churning out the same multi-layered production efforts every time -- and somehow, they catch the ears of hard rock enthusiasts, thanks to their loud, repetitive riffs and big, anthemic choruses. Some things never change.
The Northern California band came up through the late-nineties rap-rock TRL blowout sale, but eventually changed their game into the metal version of Nickelback, writing enough singles to peak on hard rock charts and get some mainstream attention every two years (remember "Scars"? Sure you don't). Now, ten years after their debut got them onto the Anger Management stage, Papa Roach continue to be one of the leaders in the current shiny-metal onslaught.
Metamorphosis is an enigma, since the term is defined as a "transformation," which would ultimately lead one to believe this album sounds nothing like their previous one... correct? Maybe the band just thought it sounded neat, because there certainly isn't any true change present, with 45 minutes of lackluster effort accompanied by mild theatrics. The album has a desire to sound epic (the marching drum introduction "Days of War" is a big indication of this), like it's playing on a battlefield with fireworks and cannons exploding all around them, the world on fire as the destruction is celebrated through song. Sadly, it's halted by the same old material, despite producer Jay Baumgardner's (Sevendust, Evanescence) bass-happy knob-turning. "Change or Die" is pretty standard, the first words being vocalist Jacoby Shaddix screaming out, "Let's go!" We know, we know -- you want to get us up on our feet and moshing to the metal... but do you always have to tell us? We can figure it out ourselves.
Like a carnival ringleader, Shaddix has a great presence on the microphone and can really howl -- he just never brings anything new to his vocal abilities, more concerned with showing off how powerful his arena-hall voice can be. "Hollywood Whore" sounds like it could have been stolen from Nikki Sixx's lyric book (oddly enough, he actually guests on "Into the Light"), another strip-club theme song -- it doesn't really fit in with the whole "battle call" theme. "I Almost Told You That I Loved You" is unmistakably a Buckcherry ripoff on all accounts, and "Lifelife" has a digitally-enhanced riff that gives the song an early-80's vibe -- the whole thing sounds like it could be a Mellencamp cover.
Guitarist Jerry Horton wants to restrain himself here and be more like Robert Smith, as Tony Palermo brings some big background beats to the mix -- there are just far too many turns where songs are hindered by one ingredient not fitting the recipe. The anthem ballad "Had Enough" is held back by Shaddix's slightly-pitchy vocals -- ask Randy Jackson, he would agree. The band then shifts to gutter-rock material they've done so many times before, sending a mixed signal as to where they're looking to go here. That's the largest drawback on Metamorphosis, which seems to dart in different direction at every moment, never settling on one path. With the final two tracks clocking in at over ten minutes, it actually opens up some doors for the sound Papa Roach may have wanted to go for. "Nights of Love" shows some soul, but only slips in the production aspect, as it could sound so much bigger. "State of Emergency" is Hoobastank-ish in the hook, but picks it up in the second half as it closes the album.
Big anthems, Jonas Brother album cover, lyrics that weave in & out of ambition-slash-unified hope and back-alley corners? Too many times the band takes one step forward and two steps back, at least showing some minimal signs of life in a dying genre built on repetition. Shaddix has a solid voice for this sound, and Horton seems to be discovering a new use for his distortion pedal, there are just far too many cliches in the ocean Papa Roach is trying to swim across, and the band can't seem to cope with their identity.

Any band who has toured with Eminem can't be all bad, I say.
And that EOTC thread still chills the ol' spine. Wonder if Brian, Ryan (rhymesies!), and any of the other musicians that have shit-talked AP (or at least an AP staff) will wake the hell up one day.

Good review, but I thought it was a great album but its coming from a big Papa Roach fan so I'm going to be a bit bias lol. Not as good as the old ones though, they need to find the right sound with the new drummer.

Why does this site even bother reviewing these albums? It's obvious that this is a niche site for a certain genre. It wasn't funny the first time and it's not funny now (and I'm not even a big Papa Roach fan).
Point being is that, you'll see a review for All Time Low on here that gets a good score for basically sticking to their genre and doing it well. On the other hand, you'll get a nu metal band with a mispelled name basically fulfilling the obligations to their genre and they get a poor score for, yes, doing the same thing (sticking to their genre and executing it well).
Again, I ask, why bother? Do you get to pat yourself on the back at the end of the day for "sticking it to Papa Roach"?

Papa Roach is a good band. "Getting Away With Murder" and "The Paramour Sessions" are both good albums with solid hard rock songs. Yes, "Infest" and "lovehatetragedy" are weak at times but their new stuff is good.
Horton writes good riffs and hooks, and Jacoby's voice is fun and good.
And Jacoby cares abuut music.
Their is a difference in bands like this and bands like Buckcherry, Hinder, and Saving Abel.

I actually agree but it's unfortunate that they've chosen to tour with these bands and basically become a part of that crowd. It's strange to think that P-Roach once covered The Pixies.
That last album was solid, but didn't leave me really craving more Papa Roach. Maybe Ill pick this up someday when FYE has a sale.
Good review though.

The argument of "good" will always be objective. You and I can argue until we're blue in the face but it will always be objective. MY problem is that ap.net is clearly a niche site targeted towards a specific genre of music (sorry site admins, but it's true). With that in mind, why bother reviewing Papa Roach? It'd be like a country music site reviewing The Jonas Brothers, just doesn't really make much sense.

I dont think they target a certain genre at all. Its all about Thursday right now, which is a brand of screamo or whatever, they are big on Blink which is pop-punk, Manchester Orchestra which touches neither of those genres, and I've seen reviews of Adele and Ben Kweller. I think its a perfect blend so I think its a cool place to talk music up or see shit for shit. Why come to the site if it annoys you so much? That doesnt make much sense

You don't think they target a certain "genre"? You think it's just merely a coincidence that 95% of the bands reported about on this site have played the Warped Tour at some point in time. Sure, they veer off every once in a while, but most bands on here can be tied to the "pop-punk/emo/screamo/post-hardcore/neo-pop" scene.

Honestly....This CD is far more different than any of their other CD's. The only songs on this CD that are good are the Intro and Change or Die, the rest suck. I have liked all of their other CD's, but this one is horrible, sounds nothing like Papa Roach. Metamorphosis is the perfect title for this album but not every metamorphosis is a good one....aka this one.
I am very disappointed in their efforts with this cd and can only hope that the next one will be better.
Same thing I said in the Hoobastank review: can't believe people still listen to this.
Yet you have a New Found Glory avatar, as if they are on some other level. You have no idea how many people say the same thing about pop punk that you just said.
I'm so tired of fans of one subgenre of rock crapping on other subgenres of rock. There's no difference. It's a group of people getting together to write music and play instruments. It's understandable if it's a subgenre you don't like, but to act like "omg can't believe people listen to this" is pretty ignorant and just gets on my nerves.
Anyway, I need to give a listen to this. They haven't put out a bad album yet. And "Lifeline" is a cool single, though out of all their lead singles it's my least favorite. "Getting Away With Murder" fucking destroys.
Actually, the lead single was "Hollywood Whore", but it tanked, so they put out "Lifeline", which is a hit. But that too, not as good as their other lead singles.
Why did I used to listen to them?

Upon first listen, it wasn't a 44 for me. Then I listened to it over and over, and it just grew repetitive. I actually think their third album is a pretty good rock disc -- just because the latest releases by some of these bands you mention are not very good doesn't mean they all deserve similar scores. Just what happens -- this was sent to me, I reviewed it, didn't find much to give it a good score. Do I think it's the worst thing I have ever heard? Not at all. Just nothing I'm going to recommend. I graded it honestly, and it came out to a 44. It wasn't intentional.

Whatever the genre is, I don't care -- I grade albums as an individual whole. In this case, it seems to want to be one thing and veers into too many directions. If I had to call it, I'd put this as the band's weakest effort -- and I haven't minded their previous material, to be frank.
"Hollywood Whore" has the charisma and hook many other hard rock radio singles contain, it's just a bit too repetitive. "Lifeline" is a highlight, but the problem with that is the rest of the album can't live up to its potential. Most times, singles are the worst songs on the album... in this case, the best song here is the lead single pick. Kind of gives the rest a lot to live up to.

It's not nearly the fact that you disliked it, its the fact that this is the mindless drivel im used to reading in the likes of NME and Kerrang magazine when i was 15. The first 2 paragraphs are akin to the writers of TMZ- giving readers who hate the subject - enough ammunition to bring the detractors out. What a fuking joke. Isn't AP beyond that rubbish? clearly not.
And past all of this - it actually sounds alot like the previous effort.

The first 2 paragraphs are akin to the writers of TMZ- giving readers who hate the subject - enough ammunition to bring the detractors out. What a fuking joke. Isn't AP beyond that rubbish? clearly not.
And past all of this - it actually sounds alot like the previous effort.
Wow, you need to re-read that then. You are looking far into my writing to see that -- that pisses me off to hear anyone compare my writing to such garbage.
You know what, until you start spitting out reviews of your own, I'm taking this with a grain of salt. I'm not here to please anyone -- if I don't think the whole record is anything worth a damn, I'm not going to pretend it is. This my style, critical with a touch of humor. I don't think anyone truly reads what I write, because I have the same conversations in nearly every review with someone telling me I'm either being too nice or too mean. There is never a medium we can all agree on, but to compare me to TMZ or Kerrang, who gives Aiden five-star reviews... that's bullshit. I don't write for sensationalism.

Take it in any way you like, but thats exactly the way i see it. The first 2 paragraphs are dire and following in the footsteps of the examples given. Great, you don't like the album - but at least be constuctive on its low points rather than the pathetic: "somehow, they catch the ears of hard rock enthusiasts, thanks to their loud, repetitive riffs and big, anthemic choruses. Some things never change" [this band has being doing exactly that for years, and been very successful with that formula]. come’ on what is this complete shit. You should not be reviewing this genre at all.
ps. its Mick Mars on 'into the light' and not Sixx

What makes you think I should not be reviewing this genre? I don't see how you can say that to me -- I gave Metallica a good review, and they're in a similar category (played on the same stations, cater to same fans). You really don't know my tastes at all or understand I have listened to Papa Roach's previous material many times -- don't tell me what I should and should not be reviewing. No one has the right to tell me or any other reviewer that. I review music -- if I were to stick to one genre, my opinion would become flaccid. I review anything I feel like I can write about. Unless you know me personally or pay attention to anything I have said (apparently, you have not), you need to keep your mouth shut.
You like the album, you think this band/genre does not deserve my review. I get it -- I think you're out of line, but I get it. Why don't we just leave it up to the people who are "big fans" of Papa Roach. Oh wait, they said they don't like it either and agree with me? Oh... weird.
And yes, I am aware I mistakingly put Sixx's name, not Mars'. Not really something that changes the thought-process of the entire album, so oh well. My bad.

That’s because you didn’t drench the Metallica review in the same cliché stigmas you did with this one. Oh right, we get it – they wear nail polish and sang that song one time and were on TRL. Incredible insight in to the band there. With a digs thrown in left and right for good measure [my reference to TMZ comes into effect]. I get the feeling this review was doomed before the play button was pressed.
You’re right, who am I to tell you what to review – but I reserve my right to use the comment button and state my reflections on it. I’ve always like a lot of the reviews on here, but this dumbfounded me how sensationalized this was (no matter how much you think it’s not) – anyhow I am a mere simpleton here, so as you were then.

When a band is cliche and rips off a band I think is far, far worse than them (Buckcherry), yes I am going to touch upon some of those cliches.
I'm fine with you commenting, dude -- I have no beef with you. I just don't appreciate the way you said it -- but all's fair and you have your voice, I have mine. Sorry you disagree.
I do agree that Chris could have worded the review better, without cliche comments, but he is right on the mediocrity of the album (though not as bad as the review suggests).
This is absolutely Papa Roach's weakest effort, after a listen and a half. Maybe it'll get better for me, but most of the albums seems like it's on the verge of being really good. They're actually one of my favorite bands, as every album prior to this has been solid from start to finish, but this feels like a step back.
There are some cool songs though. "I Almost Told You That I Love You" is awesome.

I think it's really stupid how everyone lets these reviews get to their head. Fallon is just trying to give his opinion on an album. He could think its a 44% and someone else could think its an 88%. Its all based on perspective. Perfect example: a lot of people weren't happy with the new Franz Ferdinand album, but I thought it was a great record. There will never be an album that everybody likes or dislikes, unless its BrokenCYDE of course.

Vacaville native here, meaning...Papa Roach hometown. Saw them at Three Oaks many many times and then Sacto. Their last album, I still feel, is their best. The 2 singles I've heard have not impressed though "Lifeline" is not bad but not long lasting. I do feel like this album will be a disappointment. It feels like the last Smashing Pumpkins album before they broke up, how they released 2 singles before the album came out. Hollywood Whore did not captivate me. One thing I will always agree with when it comes to this group and still will is this: Shaddix does have a great fucking voice and Tobin is a damn good bassist. Who knows maybe I will like this album but I just get the feeling that I won't. But I will say this too: Think of all Nu Metal...this band has beaten them all out. Hate them all you want, you're allowed too, "the art is hard" - Cursive. I still love them and it's not because I am from their hometown I just dig them for some reason but I will comment again when this does come out which seems way way too far away. Two singles and still more than a month away? It seems the label is wanting them to drop. No hate Onion Hardcore. I'm allowed my opinion and your concert with AAF, Dredg, and Far before all of you were signed is still my favorite concert of all time...and only cost me less than 10! Long live Three Oaks...

Ok I finally just heard the entire album and I was disappointed. It does not sound the same though; it does sound like a transformation or that they are wanting to experiment a bit. I think the lyrics are lacking and that there is not much going for it. The best thing about it, IMO, is the drums. This is my least favorite, major label, album from them. Not a fan. Paramour, Murder, Infest, LoveHate, Metamorphosis is the order for me. Definitely upset.

Same thing I said in the Hoobastank review: can't believe people still listen to this.
cant believe u still listen to NFG after their "coming home" poppy gay shit, as others have said i also have no idea why you people rate these albums when there far away from the genre u sit in...ok ur defense is that u like Getting Away From Murder....Im a fan of these guys having all their albums but i always try to be unbiased i can easily accept bands like Breaking Benjamin n others r more creative....but alll that said i think ur review was a bias one, and i have no problem with u not liking it but u seemed negative from the get go, starting off with a tone that turns anyone off to give this album a chance...ive gave this album 6 full spins cuz when I first listened to Paramour sessions i hated it but it grew "a bit" on me...now this album is VERY solid from the Intro "days of war" all the way up to "Had Enough" the rest is ok, although "Into the light" has a nice short solo from "Mars" good song.
Album Ranks. Infest, Metamorphosis, GAWN, Paramour sessions, LHT.......GAWN haves 4 great tracks but the rest of the album blows...people give this album a chance....it grows on you, guaranteed

What the hell are you talking about? I didn't review this record or the Hoobastank record. I just posted in those reviews.
Obviously to call NFG's last record "poppy gay shit' is a sad attempt of a comeback.

can I just say everyone should listen to lovehatetragedy? their new shit has an identity crisis, but that album was fucking gold.
lovehatetragedy was badass. Honestly, this is their first album I'm disappointed in. Getting Away With Murder was really good and their last one, The Paramour Sessions, was a huge change for them, but still very good. Jacoby's voice was very distinct and all the songs just screamed "epic arena rock".
But this album feels a little off. That being said, it has grown on me a little. The guitar in, I think it's track 11, is really cool, and that last track is pretty rockin'. And "I Almost Told You That I Loved You" is my favorite song about oral sex in a while.

I've commented on here already but I decided...one more time. Colour & The Shape took me 20 listens to get into, as did The Devil and God, crap...it took me 50 listens to get into Vheissu. I guess I am the type of person that just has to really invest and take time with an album to finally reach a decision. Now...I am digging this album. Yeah I know this band really should not be on this music website but if Killswitch Engage (who i do like) then it doesnt matter. For their style of music they do a good job. Not going in depth but after all the times of listening it really is a rather solid record. It does tend to stray towards the end but the new drummer adds a lot to the band. Change or Die is probably one of the best songs I've heard in awhile when it comes for everyone in a band to have their spotlight shared in one song. Paramour is still my favorite, followed by Infest, Murder, Meta, and Lovehate. Jacoby's voice has gotten a lot better but the dude really needs to work on his writing. I think he could do much better.

I hear what the review is saying, but I don't listen to Papa Roach to hear anything groundbreaking; it's solid anthem-rock. Sure, I preferred when they varied themselves between each album, but I can deal with this. "Lifeline" and "March Out Of The Darkness" are the best songs here.
