It's the easiest way to get community service hours I need in one weekend. Has anyone been a counselor before? How do you deal with rowdy kids and whatnot?

yeah, seriously. are they really going to let you be a counselor for a weekend...for community service? You'll have to watch like 6 year olds because you can't obviously be a counselor to kids your own age. Do you have babysitting experience even?
And what did you do to earn the community service punishment? that's the most interesting part about this thread.

Kids are annoying. I wasn't even a counselor -- I just aided a beginner photography class filled with thirteen and fourteen year old freshmen and it was awful, and I'm only a few years older than them. I'd imagine that you would be dealing with younger kids though? I have an eight year old sister who screams, hits, pinches, etc. I have yet to find an effective method to deal with that.

ahh, ok. Uh, yeah watching kids in the grade below you is going to be weird because they will not respect you as an authority figure at all, but i'm sure you figured that out already. Just be cool with them, don't try and act like you're so much older than them because they're not stupid, they'll walk all over you if they sense you're trying to have a power trip. Plan some games and activities in advance. Just think of things you'd like to do, don't dumb it down at all for them and it should be a good time. I'm sure also there will be some older people around to help out if things get out of hand. Do you happen to know how many people you'll be "counseling"?

It's a cabin of 8 kids. But there's another counselor my age in there too.

I volunteered at an retirement community. Old people are mean sometimes and well if kids are like old people and I think they have many similarities. They like food and naps.

I worked from being a CIT to a counselor to assistant site director at a summer day camp for five year olds pretty much all of middle/high school. It was definitely a great experience, but at the tail end of it I was so done with it. I never want to be a camp counselor ever again. Seriously.

Being a camp counselor is probably the best job I ever had. Me and my best friend since 3rd grade were partners and counselors of the year in 2001 and told we would have won it every year but they tried to spread it around.

I do this every summer and love it. 14 year olds shouldn't be left responsible for anyone other than themselves and what the hell kind of camp is up and running in weekends during the winter?

haha, yes this is one similiarity I like to block from my mind. But thanks for reminding me, now I remember why the retirement community smelt the way it did. :puke:
