I am surprised they didnt include that crazy 50 year old bitch who writes pretty much every grammy winning pop single in her basement.

I don't think Cobain should be on the list (they should've left it as a top ten, instead of having that eleventh spot), and I don't know about Townshend being that high up.

I'm glad Dylan was #1, though.

That list is aaaaace.

I agree with it.. entirely apart from Kurt Cobain.

Bob Dylan is without a doubt no.1

However .. I see no Johnny Cash

Talk about the usual suspects... It's the most obvious list ever, and while no one can really disagree, I think it's all kinda pointless... Give me a list of the greatest underrated songwriters of the last decade, and please don't leave Tim Kasher and John K. Samson off THAT list!

good list

if john mayer was anywhere near that list, i was gonna walk my fat ass out into traffic

Paul Simon? Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour? Elvis Costello? They all trump Kurt Cobain

Bob Dylan <333. But I agree they need Waters and Costello. Take of fucking Bono and put Paul Simon in his place. Jesus, I hate U2.

Bruce owns all! Check out my myspace at www.myspace.com/johnnygrushecky to see a picture of me rocking out with him.

Bob Dylan deserves first though.

Kurt Cobain? what the hell.

i'd swap dylan with lennon/mccartney, bump elton john/bernie taupin up a few spots, and add burt bacharach (or however you spell that). but overall, i'd tend to agree, despite how obvious it is.

edit: oh yeah, and i'd put smokey robinson on there too (definitely ahead of cobain)

Neil Young is so bomb....I'm of firm belief that he is THE hardest rocker of all time

I doubt anyone would agree with me, but I think Jim Croce should've been considered.

Cobain is overrated. Yeah I said it, wanna fight about it?

If you swap dylan with lennon/mccartney then i pretty much agree although I do think they should have left Kurt Cobain off the list.

They missed off the Madden brothers though! They're way better song writers than any of those guys! :-p

i like how everyone here disagrees with most of the list just cuz they don't like the bands and none of the one's listed are part of the "scene". although i am shocked that Kurt Cobain made it to eleven. i like him but still..no way.

Raffi wasn't included so the list is invalid.

Definately.

And other timeless classics such as "Banana Phone", "Down by the Bay", and "Apples and Bananas".

Agreed on Cobain. It's honestly a cliche to put him up there. You have to acknowledge him in terms of being an icon, but aside from being a part of moving music from hair metal to grunge, his music doesn't come close to the others on this list in any way.

haha have you ever seen that flash cartoon about the song "Banana Phone"?

thats a cliche list. Those lists are always the same, catered for the common music fan. Mccartney is shit.

I highly doubt AOL is gonna include people like:

Cash, Mike Ness, Brett Gurewitz, Greg Graffin, Joe Strummer, Tim Armstrong, Elvis Costello, Glenn Tilbrook etc...

i.e. people who actually challenged things and had something to say.

09/26/05, 01:12 PM
wow, what an astute list! AOL really nailed it with that one!

and to think, they went all out and found amazing songwriters that aren't on every other list.

and whats the deal with the top 11? haha

i agree with it for the most part, but seriously U2, i would have to put Pink Floyd ahead of them and Kurt above U2..... hate to break it to you guys but Cobain deserves all the recognition he gets even if he didnt intend to be what he bacame

On a serious note: I have never listened to Bob Dylan and according to a lot of you he's pretty good. I guess I might be missing out.

09/26/05, 07:32 PM
take off U2, get some Tom Petty on there, or Johnny Cash. Bob Dylan is good and all, but the Beatles are definitely better. And Led Zeppelin and Neil Young are definitely better than Pete from the Who.

Why are people hating on U2? I would venture to say that U2 and Green Day are the only two "rock and roll superstars" that are around right now. They pretty much are the Green Day of the 80s and 90s.

way too short! am i the only one who thinks tom waits should be on there, as well as johnny cash, elvis costello, simon and garfunkel?
