I said that what he said was racist and sexist. I think that we are all racist and sexist, myself included. Actually, I think you're incorrect. I understand your concept, but your terminology is off.
Racist is generally used to describe words of racial intolerance. Kind of seems like Caleb was going the opposite direction, doesn't it? He didn't mean it like, "black women are my meat" (which sounds funny). It comes off more like a description: i.e. the red-head, the blind boy, the filipino. Technically, couldn't you say it was better he said "dark" instead of "black" or "african-american" since Tyra is bi-racial, and may prefer a term that isn't so limiting? She is darker than him. Not a lie.
Sexist is a term that is discriminatory based on sex. "Meat" can be used to refer to any sex. Now, if he said, "Women are meat"...that's sexist. I get what you're saying, but you're talking more about objectifying, not sexism. People (especially women) use them interchangeably. They certainly aren't.
But we objectify things all the time, so, you can't fault him there. Also, I don't think he said his remarks out of malice or ignorance, but maybe more out of satire and jest. Anyways, I'm sorry you're getting trashed on pretty bad in here. I doubt anyone is racist, but they are saying stuff just to fuck with you. Let it go. You can only control yourself.
P.S. Wigger is not a white person who loves african-americans. Rather, it is a white person who imitates them. Just...to clarify. :)

A well thought out post. Refreshing. I still disagree with you. You can't remove a statement from its cultural context. His remarks were not made in a vacuum, but in the cultual context and social history of the U.S.. Saying that objectifying someone is never racist or sexist is incorrect. I would argue that objectification is at the heart of racism and sexism. In American culture, black women have long been seen as sexually available for white men, a commodity really. By using language that objectified her as a consumer good he reinforced these stereotypes that are racist and sexist in origin. Caleb made it seem acceptable to reduce Tyra to only two aspects of her person, her skin color and her gender.
I understand the many ways you can use the word wigger. Look at how he was using it.
I think it would be wrong to not say something. I don't want to live in a world where people think it is ok to say these things.

I agree with you, hip-hop is incredibly sexist, but that isn't what I was talking about. I was talking about the power of language. What Caleb was engaging in was discursive colonization. By reducing Tyra to just two characteristics, race and gender, and linking those to a consumption commodity, he is able to take ownership of her. He has gone from being the viewer to the owner of the subject matter...in this case, her body. And that is an important distinction. "She was my first taste of dark meat." This is the moment at which he appropriates her for his own use. He is free to do with her what he chooses because she loses any agency of her own. She has become a passive object for his pleasure, hypersexualized and classified as an exoticized "other." Caleb would not say Kathy Ireland was his first piece of white meat because white is the normative group. Tyra Banks is labeled as dark meat because she is perceived as different. By using the term meat, which does carry a sexualized weight, he was informing us that she is not to be dealt with as an equal but as a pleasure source, open for the use of any man who should choose to have her. It is fundamentally linked to her gender and her sex. Race and sex were essential to his objectification. Imagine his stamement without them. Blank was my first taste of blank blank.
I don't think he needed to have malicious intent for the comments to be racist or sexist, because we live in a racist and sexist society.
I think we are fighting over semantics in the case of wigger. I understand his use of the sterotype, and I find it incredibly problematic. In the first case it assumes that only a black person can care about race and only a woman can care about sexism...and that they would both be wrong. In the second case it assumes that a white male caring about those things is ridiculous, and I would argue traitorous.

geez, you guys must have been on the debate team at one point in time or something. although the subject is interesting to discuss (i guess) it sounds way more extreme than what caleb really meant.

Becuase racism and sexism have very real consequences in the lives of many people, and this is a place where I belong as much as any of you. Caleb started this thread, not me. I just spoke up when I saw something I thought was wrong. You can disagree with me, but I hope that you would do the same.

:)haha i love you

I agree with you, hip-hop is incredibly sexist, but that isn't what I was talking about. I'm talking about your statement "American culture..." from the previous post. I just wanted to see an example of where typically a white man thinks black women are his commodity.
Not to sound like I'm running out of arguments (which I'm not, and I'll probably have to revert back to what I was doing if I don't get around to doing my Chinese homework), but is it possible that you created a more segregated view of race than Caleb? I mean, you put words in his mouth. First, you assumed he was white ("the norm") instead of possibly asian/latin/anything. I don't know Caleb, I don't know if he's white or whatever, but saying that he used the word "dark" to differentiate from the "norm" is absurd since there is no proof. He may be mexican, and always liked "white girls" and suddenly Tyra is the first "darker" person. You see his comment as a mark from the typical, I see it as a categorical description, nothing else.
The word "meat" in the sensualized form that you are using would, yes, not mean that he considered her to be his equal. But he was talking about masterbating, and no boy looks at Eva Longoria and says, "My. What a fucking charming personality you have. The way you crinkle your nose at politics makes me pop a hard one." He was talking about raw, one-sided sex, with "meat" meaning a device of the human body. Natalie Portman, Eva, Scarlet Johansen, Kiera Knightley, would all be considered of "meat" in this situation. Same with men though. I mean, to fix this would mean to tell every man, "Only masterbate of your girlfriend/teacher/someone you admire as a person." Tough luck.
Also, I think intent means a great deal. Why is that? African-Americans can use the "n-word" without malice, but instead in satire. In the colonist days, the Americans stole the term "yankee" from the British's discriminatory slang. Today "yankee" reminds you of a baseball team, but in the deep South it's an insult because of the civil war. Because society is flawed, is the individual? If a child grew up and never understood the impact of the n-word, and they said it, does that make them racist, just because the adults are?
We'll drop the wigger argument. I was simply clarifying what he was saying, not telling you that is how it should go. He meant it as a satirical joke to piss you off.
Actually, I'm sure everyone is tired of this thread. Sorry.

Debate team? Nah. :) Those kids were going to law school, and I was pimping a Daewoo. Yeah, I figured everyone would get tired of reading after it stopped being funny. I'm not trying to make it out to be anymore than what Caleb said it was, but I'm trying to point out that not everything should be taken so literally or even so politically correct. Caleb meant it as a joke, and that is all. I was just trying to show that it was a joke, and not a derogatory comment.

I would do Eva. God knows I would. She can be my meat. I can say that though, because I'm a chick. I'm not sexist, I just hate myself in that dirty, hypersexualized way.

That's not true.so you would of said something to caleb if he was black? you're full of shit if you say yes
and plus what caleb said was in the general forum. he has a right to say what he wants just like everyone else. i would agree with you about being "professional" if he said this in a news post, but it wasn't. I'm sure you have said far worse things then this.

Tell me you're half-woman, and it makes the argument even better. ;)
Shit, I had to kinda defend you. Hotlanta is as good as Athens, and that makes us practically family. Hell, and since we're from Georgia, that brings the total to two branches on that family tree.

That's exactly what I am thinking. Tyra Banks knows that guys are masturbating to her pictures. If you were a model and were using your body to earn money, then what does that make you? She sure isn't selling her personality on those Victoria's Secret ads.
