Release Date: November 18, 2008
Record Label: Epic Records

Hey Mudvayne,

I recently chose to review your new album The New Game over here at Absolute Punk. I liked some of your guys' music, and it only made sense that I should check out your new album, which seemed to go fairly unnoticed by, well, everyone. I have to say, I've always been at least fairly impressed by your releases. I mean, Ld. 50 was completely tight, and you've never had a single I didn't like. There comes a time, however, when everyone has to change their sound, and I think you guys are a bit overdue.

The New Game sounds pretty much exactly like every other one of your guys' releases. "Do What You Do" is your cookie-cutter single, you have those heavy-hitters you always include, and you've even got the one haunting song where Gray sings ("Never Enough"). What just falls flat in it is that it sounds really similar to the rest of your discography. The vocals are still on top form, the instrumentation is just as tight, you still balance between both haunting and cheesy yet eerie lyrics, but enough is enough.

You guys really had to deliver after By the People, For the People, but I'm afraid The New Game just didn't do that. While there may be a bit more aggresion in there than your other albums, it's just not enough to change it up and give me enough progression to be satisfied. There are still a couple of sweet tracks, "Have It Your Way" especially, but they don't really make up for the monotony of the album.

Well, this is so long Mudvayne, untill you release another album. I'll keep the faith, and hopefully I'll be rocking out to another of your guys' singles again sometime in the future.

Sincerely,

Andrew Klatzke

The New Game was very very bad...Wish Taproot was still big. They're still a solid band and their last 2 albums were actually very good, especially Blue Sky Research (underrated and wasn't even marketed I think).

I had no idea they were still around. I remember them being popular back in 8th grade (in 2001) but I han't heard about them since. I'm guessing they still aren't very good.

anyways kudos for doing so many fucking album reviews dude.

Blue Sky Research is an amazing cd in my eyes.

I thought Mudvayne's Lost And Found was pretty good. This just came off as bland, but I did like "Fish Out Of Water". Nice review.

This is easily Mudvayne's weakest release, and that makes me sad, as I used to be a huge fan.

The instrumentation and vocals are still good, but their sound seems more dulled and commercial than ever. This is apparently one of two albums recorded back to back, so I can still hope that the second album they recorded is stronger/sharper/heavier than this one.

Good review btw.
