Right now I have:

Tera Melos / By the end of tonight: Complex full of phantoms
NFG - NWAF
MCS - I am the movie + Even if it kills me
minus the bear - menos el oso
protest the hero - fortress
limbeck - hi, everything's great
saves the day - stay what you are
fear before - art damage

+ some old stuff like simon and garfunkel and stuff like that. I really just started and have a few that I know I'll be buying soon. I started just by getting the classics, some of my all time favorites. Now i'm looking for new stuff.

Fall out boy next to the gaslight anthem? Paramore next to alkaline trio? That picture makes my dick sad.

Do you guys actually have record players or do you just collect the records for fun?

mybreakingpoint
03/25/09, 09:44 AM
I typically only collect 7"'s. The only 12"'s I own are Elliott's "False Cathedrals" and Cursive's "The Ugly Organ"

i have probably 4 or 5 7"'s and that's about it. i have a record player and listen to a select handful of my 7"'s pretty regularly when i'm in my bedroom.

This is my Minus The Bear collection so far. All I need now is Highly Refined Pirates and Interpretaciones Del Oso and then I can start looking for the different color variants of the records.

The only new things I have on vinyl are Manchester Orchestra's newest album and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. I have a lot of older vinyls that I've inherited (stolen) from my parents as well as picked up from garage sales. Lot of Beatles, The Who, etc.

They're pretty fantastic. Kind of chamber pop-y with a lot of great hooks. Plus, Wes Miles's voice is just awesome. Check them out sometime.

It's a great album, and for some reason it feels a little more 'correct' hearing it on vinyl, especially after it gets a little beat up and gets kind of grainy sound to it. Don't be an elitest ass please

Hahahahahaha. Except for the fact that I NEVER claimed to be cool or underground. I was just sick of listening to old crusty records and wanted one or two of my own. You're just starting an argument for no reason whatsoever.
When things are packed in boxes, its fun to go through and discover what your parents were like when they were your age.
I know my record "collection" may not be as expansive as yours. So be it. I'm not gonna go crying about it and I don't have a fucking thing to apologize for.

There is nothing elitist about calling you guys out for what you are: trendhoppers who wouldn't be buying records if it wasn't cool.

I don't care how shitty your collections are. Mine would be quite shitty if I posted it here. Mostly noise/skramz bands nobody cares about and the rest are hipster essentials/punk records nobody cares about, but it's mine. That's the difference. Basically every collection here is interchangable. No personality at all.

Ap.net Vinyls Collection 2k9

Fall Out Boy Record
Brand New Record
Obligatory Old Record (probably bob dylan or the beatles)
preordered Daisy
shitty metalcore
repeat x five.

Perhaps, and I know this is a stretch, but is it not possible that I was talking about one of the other 30 or so users that posted in this thread? No need to be so defensive.

Your list makes me laugh though. Although I will never punish anyone for owning Dylan. I don't care if it is for street cred.

I will 100% back you up on the people buying vinyl when it became cool though. I guess you could throw me in that category since I only started collecting a year and a half ago. But it really only throws me into confusion when people buy records with no player. I don't really care why you buy them but if you don't listen to them than it's just insulting.

Do some of you even have record players or does seeing Lil Wayne's giant ugly mug or RIOTRIORIOTRIOTRIOTRIOTRIOT on your wall truly just put a giant fucking smile on your face? Would definitely pay 50+ for My Chemical Romance Watchmen picture disc?

HOW MANY VINYLS WERE MADE FOR IT? IS IT AS RARE AS DEJA? MY PREORDER BETTER GET HERE ON TIME. BETTER COME WITH A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD TOO SO I CAN LISTEN TO IT!"

Alright first off, the quoting things I said in the chat thread thing is quite creepy. Secondly, yeah I like Gaslight and Bon Iver. I'm a fan of bands who make quality music, what a trend jumper I am! I'm not sure where the Circa thing came from but I guess you needed some band to make the oh-so-original mommy's credit card joke with. I like the music I like. A lot of it gets swept up by this site. That's why I frequent it. Not so I can learn new insults, use them in arguments, and feel superior, but so I can discuss the music I like with fans of that music. I'm not pretending to be above all the posters here. That's the difference between you and me.

Also, because I feel the need to call you out, I will also add that I seem to recall you having a certain black and white Bon Iver avatar before you decided you were too hardcore for avatars. Bitching about people liking bands you're a fan of. Now that is original.

I decided recently that, with the decline of CDs and my love for physical albums and the artwork that comes with it, it'd make sense for me to hop on the whole trendy vinyl bandwagon. I bought a copy of this on vinyl last week:

http://ticktick.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/microphones_glow_pt2.jpg

Yeah, I felt pretty lame buying such a typical hipster album, especially since I don't own a record player yet, but you have to start somewhere, right?

Yesterday, I got some vinyl from my brother's church's rummage sale for 10 cents each, including Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. I also bought Procol Harum because the cover looked sweet; turns out I kind of enjoy this band. I still live with my parents, and there's not much room here, so I'm not sure when I'll actually buy a record player, but I'd love to have a nice one in my room when I have my own house someday, and it's not a bad idea to have this pseudo-collection ready for then.

There's no personality to it. You can easily make fun of most of these collections because they're all derivative. They're not collections so much much as mere accessories that people are posting on the internet to be verified. Cool, you got that Deja Record, awesome you have thrice! It's different when you go through a collection of someone who's actually into vinyl. You'll see a reflection of their personality. It isn't exactly about the literal bands being collected. that's why i think this thread is dumb. it's just bragging that you bought something. would you think a post pictures of your cd collection thread be cool?

AlternateToLife
08/22/09, 07:51 PM
Yeah it looks cool but who honestly gives a fuck if it looks cool it's just something you're going to be listening to. I don't whip out my purple/blue/yellow/diarrhea vinylz, take pix, and then upload 46 images to my PhOtObUcKeT account so I can brag about them on the internet.

Ok you win. You're substantially cooler than everyone in this thread because you love music for the music man. Collecting records can't possibly an enjoyable experience outside of the songs on the album. Why don't we all just download music from limewire and play it on our ipods? It's all the same songs anyway right? Music collectors for decades had the wrong idea, trying to have a physical experience they can enjoy outside of the song. Lyric sheets? Overrated. Colored vinyl? Overrated. So fuck all of us right? You don't get any pleasure out of the design of the album so everyone who does is just a tool looking for bragging rights right? Right! You're so smart. I'm glad you found your way onto this thread to enlighten us all.

I'm not necessarily saying that but I just think it's a little ridiculous to take the color of the record into account when making a purchase.

Eh... If the color matters to the buyer for artistic/aesthetic reasons, then I see no problem with it. Also, if it's his/her favorite band, why not try to have a more complete personal collection? If it's a matter of being able to brag about having said color(s), though, then it is pretty ridiculous.

I'm not saying that shit doesn't play any part in the listening experience, all I'm saying is that there's no reason to make a huge post in some thread on AbsolutePunk so you can brag about all the vinylz you have. I don't give a fuck if someone has a blue take this to your grave repress or even if someone bought hard candy by madonna for 30 dollars at best buy, theres no reason to brag about it and try to seem "cool" to a bunch of anonymous fucks on the internet.

Yeah I sarcasm overloaded a little. I apologize.

Nothing in your post has pointed you in the direction of hipster/elitist so I will not call you that. I have no problem with elitism, at least then you make an actual opinion on your own tastes and opinions instead of just making generic hate posts. I for one am interested in some people's purchases. Many of whom, unlike you, have been posting on this board before so I do know a little about them and seeing the types of albums they buy interests me. If that makes me an "anonymous fuck" or whatever else you wanna call it then so be it.

Posting pics is a way to start conversation. Conversation had actually started in this thread before this argument arose (which I am partially to blame for)

I personally don't really care for the posters that frequent the general forum as much as this forum. I think it's a good thread idea. If it wasn't for the extreme throat jumping that came up, it could have been a good thread. In my opinion of course

People are mocking them because they are bragging about owning them. it isn't what they own, it's the fact that they're bragging about owning something that most people here who buy records probably bought.

that's why i think this thread is dumb. it's just bragging that you bought something. would you think a post pictures of your cd collection thread be cool?

agreed times a million.

i bet the "standard" vinyls collector (vinyls for nubs who don't actually collect records) on this site comprises of these records:

brand new, neutral milk hotel, saves the day, gaslight anthem, thursday, and some well known postrock band like explosions in the sky. if you search around DF or VC you'll see how extensive peoples' collections can get.

And in some ways I could be considered that. With me though, it's not about the records or how cool vinyl is or wow this is really old school or whatever. It's about the music. I haven't bought any of my records, they all were either given to me or I recieved them at a concert with a bunch of other stuff that came in the package. It's about the music and I don't turn down music. It's not that it's cool, it's just music. If I got free concert tickets I wouldn't turn them down. Free CD, I wouldn't turn it down. Music is music no matter what type of format it's in.

Ease up on the people who are new to it. Who cares?

Vinyl sales went up 300% last year. Best Buy is starting to carry vinyl while the CD section gets smaller and smaller. Did that happen because it's all of a sudden "cool" again? Probably. So be it. As I get more and more into music, I feel inclined to hear some of these albums the way they were originally meant to be heard. That's why I'm devoting a room in my house to this type of stuff. As music evolves from something I enjoy into something I have become passionate about, I want to further my experience. Many are in the same boat. The MP3 era has forced things such as album art, lyric sheets, etc. into the background. I find great enjoyment in digging through the boxes at record stores. Is Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album rare? Shit no. Is it cool to stumble across a copy of Who's Next that was probably used as a surface for drugs in some basement in the 70's? To me, it kinda is.

Just because some of us are late to the party, don't shit on the fact that we're here at all.

The fact that you have a record set that I've wanted for some time and instead of listening to them, like they should used, you mount them on the wall. That upsets me as someone who enjoys listening to records on vinyl and as a Thrice fan.

Sorry to have upset you sir. Fortunately for me, I'm also a huge Thrice fan and of course already owned the CD releases of the albums - which I can listen to anytime I want, anywhere I want. The vinyl set didn't exactly sell out quick, there was plenty of time to order it while it was up.

I think part of the vinyl experience is not just listening to them, but also the artwork and physical aspect, which in the case of this box set is incredible.

People who think buying Guns N' Roses and Metallica records at Best Buy makes them cool.

I'm not going to ease up on people at all.

The people I'm criticizing aren't being criticized because they're new. If you read anything I wrote and think that, then you're a fucking moron and shouldn't be posting on any forum ever. There is a mentality that is very prominent in "new people" (not that it isn't also found, though in lesser amount in "old people") that collecting records makes you somehow cool and unique and also a better music listener.

That's what I'm pointing out in threads like this. It's just kids bragging about shit they bought as if having that awesome paramore record on vinyl makes you cool. I'm saying this because you would never see "post pics of your cd collection". Merely owning some shitty LP doesn't make you passionate. Nor does bragging about going to record stores. drop the act, because there's ways you can talk about vinyl collecting in a meaningful manner.

don't you mean "nobody who's ever heard of cds has a reason to rip their lps"? at this point, i don't even know why someone older would want to do it.

I spelled this out to you.

You could be legit and have that new thrice record or whatever but this thread exists to pump up egos that don't need to be pumped up.

I think this is a very good point. I feel sorry for a lot of you kids whose only access to vinyl is through Hot Topic or your parents' collections. I know what makes my collection special for me personally is that many of my records (particularly the ones I bought early on) have a story to them - either in terms of how I came to possess them, or the records themselves being documents of my life at the time. Now, it seems like most people are buying vinyl just to possess some so-called 'collectible' that they think they have to have, and every list for nearly every kid in this scene is exactly the fucking same - you've got Deja, Circa Survive picture disc, some fucking piece of shit Hot Topic release like the Juno or Watchmen soundtrack that no one ever plays and fuck knows why they buy them, etc. etc. It's like no thought, no love has gone into it at all. It's totally homogenized.

I do. I have mostly records from the 60's/70's, but some recent ones as well. I've been listening to records for only 9 years, but honestly, I love listening to my older albums on days when I'm at home and relaxing with a hot cup of coffee. Nothing beats it....well, maybe rummaging through crate after crate and pulling out a long-time want for only $2.

Ok. Vinyls = Records
Record player = turntable.

And records ARE cool! They have bigger artwork, better sound quality, and you can get them for very cheap if you know where to look. But if you're just gonna buy Daisy and / or Revolver, I think one should just stick to CD's.

I only have a shitty Ion USB turntable that I got from Newbury Comics :/
