View Full Version : What annoys you most in a song?

I'd like to know what really gripes you in a pop-punk/pop-rock/rock/emo/anime-hair-band/pop song. Whether it's certain chord progressions, instruments, vocal techniques, lyrical cliches, percussion, or anything else, I want to know. No detail is too small. If it annoys you, and you hear it all the time in songs, let it be known here. What lyric have you heard a hundred times too many? Which four successive chords drive you to the brink of insanity?
Here are some simple ideas to get you thinking:
- Pronouncing a word such as 'break', as 'braa-ee-aa-ee-ake'
- Filling in missing syllables at the end of a lyric with the words 'now', 'tonight', or 'right now', even when completely inappropriate and out of context. i.e., 'Today we walk this road alone tonight.'
- Ending the bridge with a soft, piano and voice version of the chorus (even when no one in the band plays the piano), then going back into the chorus with the full band; poorly attempting to emulate dynamic.
- What I like to call 'octave solos'. Which is an octave chord being played as the rest of the instruments cut out, leaving the drums (usually just cymbal and snare hits for a measure or so) and the octave solo. These are awfully overused.
The options and aggravations are endless... I've been thinking about this for a while, and have plenty of my own generic song annoyances, but I want to hear yours.

Most of those things can annoy me but aren't always that big of a deal. Nothing annoys me more than bad production, especially pushing the volume way too high (see: "The Loudness War" on YouTube; Death Magnetic). Bands with generic breakdowns are high up there as well. Also, stupidly auto tuned vocals drive me crazy. I don't mind 808s and Heartbreak because it fits the mood, but so many scene bands do it just to easily have a generic "catchy" chorus.

Burning bridges... Awful, awful metaphor in a song. Especially if that bridge happens to be burning 'tonight'.
G-C-D is bad, but can be used properly and quite well. G-D-Em-C and variations thereof are in this category as well.

Thanks man!
Overproduction is a funny thing... I love listening to bands who abuse auto-tune, and have the most slick, practically fake sounding instruments; then imagining what their songs would sound like if they were recorded 15 years ago, before any of that technology existed. The sad truth is, those bands wouldn't even be able to record an album. They would never be able to spread their talentless poison. And the world would be a better place.

I like that most of the time.
Lyrically I hate rhyming just for the sake of rhyming, or because the writer thinks that a song needs his song to rhyme in order to be good/catchy. I tend to like when words don't' completely rhyme, but have a close "sound" so they work together. i.e. I'm listening to Eminem and he just used piss and turbulence. On their own, they don't rhyme, but the way he delivered it, made it work without sounding forced.
Edit: And when a band tries to showcase talents too much. Like on guitar or drums. Cool, you can play a solo, too bad it ruined your song.

Ooooh yeah... Very nice.
'Wearing my heart on my sleeve' is one of the worst lyrics out there.
Here's one for you:
What I like to call an 'Echo-echo-bo-becho', which is a partially-repeated lyric at the end of a line (usually with some sort of cheesey vocal effect). For example, 'I've got my heart on my sleeve, is it too much for you to take tonight? (take tonight?)'

I really like the idea of a hidden track, but two songs on the same track, with a ton of silence in between, is definitely very annoying. Maybe if the "hidden" track wasn't the same track as the last (or technically second to last) track, and in place of silence, they had a soft, repetitive guitar/piano piece, or sounds like waves, rain, a fireplace, traffic... Something like that.

There's one lyric in particular that I'm hoping someone will mention. And of all the things mentioned in this thread, this one aggravates me the most.
I'm not saying what it is... But once you notice it, you'll hear it in almost every pop-punk/rock song out there. And it will hurt your brain that so many lyricists could use the same generic words and not even realize it. I don't blame them, as it's incredibly subtle and sneaky - which is why none of you have noticed it yet. But I still yearn for its death. It gives me 'Frank Grimes syndrome', as seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEr5I5d_EKw

One thing I hate is when bands have really straight-forward lyrics that aren't clever, funny, and don't even sound cool. Just very, very literal.
-In general, predictability. If I can predict the phrase/chord/note in the vocal melody that comes next it's really disheartening for me.
Yes, definitely. I find myself being able to sing along to a lot of pop songs when I'm hearing them for the first time.
The old 'Right before we repeat the chorus for the last time, let's either slow down or become very quiet, or both'.
With the right song, I actually like this.
Songs ending in random, annoying noises for no apparent reason (such as static, screeching, phone off the hook, etc.).
This reminds me of the end of Dark Blue by Jack's Mannequin... that one really low not played on the piano. Almost ruins the song for me.
Where there's a song at the end of an album, twenty minutes of silence, and a hidden track (often useless).
It's kind of petty, but the thing that bugs me the most about this is that usually I just listen until the song is over and then skip the silence and "hidden track" so it shows that I've listened to that song 0 times even though I haven't. I could easily just go to the very end, but I always forget and I'm pretty lazy.

I hate deathcore in general, or any band that is heavy for the sake of being heavy.
I cannot stand it when a metal band plays the double bass peddle almost the entire time.
The same chord patterns used over and over.
Music that lacks passion, and when you can tell the band has mailed it in.
Generic music that strives for nothing more than picking up on the new craze.

i also hate when bands leave the track recording and it's just an obnoxious monotone noise for 1 minute after the song is over, just cut and go to the next track.
and i'm with everybody else on the irritating cliche lyrics thing.

I hate when a band simply plays an open E string tuned to Drop D over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over.... etc.
I also hate when songs do the chorus twice in a row, but once with a choir..(AAR - Gives you Hell). Like seriously, be creative and come up with another verse.

I definitely agree with you. Usually, I'll have my ipod on its dock and I'll think the song is over, only to be startled when music starts playing ten minutes later.

i hate songs that end so abruptly. like they just end it on that note. see josie- blink 182 for an example (with the exception of the little guitar fade part at the end)
Overly obvious lyrics in a chorus annoy me. Example: "Life Is Good. Eternal Life Is Better."
Lyrics that sound like they were written by a 13 year old boy coming into puberty: Example: "Something In Your Mouth" - Nickelback
If I were king you'd be my queen type lyrics. Example: "If I Were King" - Queensryche
When you can predict the next line to the song due to the most obvious of rhymes. Jeremy Camp is the master at this.
Drum fills where zero effort is evident. Example: "Second Chance" - Shinedown

Because in that case I very much agree.
Very good... I didn't think anyone would get it.
Though, it's actually just 'This is...'
Oh how I loathe 'This is' songs...
'This is a broken heart tonight'
'This is the final stand!'
'This is setting the captives free'
'This is a revolution!'
'This is like gravity tonight'
'This is burning the bridges tonight'
'This is the final warning'
'This is my heart on my sleeve tonight'
'This is a brand new concept'
'This is what every other band is doing, so I'll copy it tonight''
I promise you'll be hard-pressed to find ANY pop song out there without 'This is...'
Or for that matter, any song without 'This is...' AND 'tonight'.
In fact, I challenge anyone to find me a pop-punk song that doesn't use 'This is...' or 'tonight'. I would be blown away. I love pop-punk music, but the music and lyrics are just getting lazier and lazier. You shouldn't need to tell us what 'this is'... Just write some good lyrics that tell us what 'this is', without cheaping out and saying it...

I hate the "Saves The Day" breakdown when it's used by any other band besides Saves the Day. You know, when the guitarists sustain one power chord, and as it slowly fades away the bass can be clearly heard, but all it's doing is playing the root notes of the chords in the verse. Then the music stops for a split second, and then it speeds up again, usually faster than before.

How about...
Singers who take a big, exaggerated breath, generally before before a super cheesey phrase, attempting to sound 'sexy'... Whether they'll admit it or not, they're trying to sound sexy. There's absolutely no point in taking that loud breath otherwise. Can you imagine how frightening it would be if I called up a friend and said, 'Hey man, wanna go play some (loud, sexy, breathy inhale) basketball?' People don't do that in real life. Although, for some reason I can picture the kid from Metro Station doing it all the time...
Also, 'one-word-whispers' at the end of a lyric are really funny... Not so much annoying. But they're quite hilarious, and can make a song go from serious to comical in that split second.

This, and it's not always to sound sexy. The singer from Muse is absolutely terrible at this, and I really don't know why they don't edit it out in their recordings.
THIIIISSS (gasp) IIISSSSS (gasp) THE LAST TIME I'LLLL FORGET YOU (gasp)

Oh how I love NFG, they are my favourite ever punk-pop band. I don't think they are by any means the best lyricists ever but I certainly wouldn't call them generic. I think musically they are pretty tight as they have played different styles over the years (I think NWAF showcases this nicely as it kind of takes their back catalogue's different sounds and mashes them together on this album)
Pop-Punk simply isn't the same anymore, I just think theses new generation bands of today/last couple of years are so bland and samey. I mean I saw The Metro Station for the first time on Kerrang! TV last night and jesus... what a pile of utter nonsense. It's so squeaky clean and slick sounding meaning there isn't any "rock" elements in the music at all, never mind the whole image.
I did enjoy All Time Low's first two EPs (TWTRIDWTE/PUOSU) and their first album (The Party Scene) as I thought that was solid pop-punk with a much faster and rough edged sound compared to their lastest stuff. I mean SWIR did have a couple of catchy tunes, but it was very dissapointing over all. It is far too OVER produced which results in squeaky clean and slick sounding albums, much like most other modern bands of today.

I downloaded Metro Station's CD last year. I was waiting a while to listen to it, and then I saw them in concert with Cobra Starship. Before I even saw them play, I just saw the creepy-Cyrus kid and the troll, and I knew it'd be a disaster. The minute I got home from the concert I deleted any evidence that I had ever had that CD on my computer. It's just awful, awful, awful; they have the worst stage presence ever, let alone sound.
I love All Time Low's entire discography, so I'll put it out there first. SWIR, for me, was hella catchy. It wasn't strictly as "good" a CD as The Party Scene or Put Up or Shut Up, but it achieved what it meant to. I tend to have a very balanced perspective when I evaluate a CD. I'll expect different things from, say, Explosions in the Sky and The Friday Night Boys--but I can like both.
So, for SWIR, they went for a expressly more pop sound, and they achieved it. It might be a bit overproduced, but I guess that's what you get when you're trying something new. I really like the clean sound, though. And though Gaskarth's lyrics may be less "deep" on SWIR, they're fun and catchy as fuck, not to mention clever.

-Overly auto-tuned vocals or just terrible vocals in general.
-Electronic drum patches over real drum kits that is showing up in most "screamo/electronic/hardcore" shit now.
- Songs with a bass drum that sounds dead or like a bullet shot. Nothing more annoying that a bunch of double bass where its not needed.
-Bands who don't record to a metronome and you can hear the song either dragging or speeding up. In some cases its OK for a band to do this, but 99% of the time it sounds awful.

agreed. sometimes the obscure lyrics are good though because you still feel what they mean, if that makes sense.
But I definetly think lyrics that are clever, witty, but still understandable are the best.

I've seen ATL twice since they released SWIR, and both times were awesome. The Sellouts Tour was especially awesome. There're bands that I'd love to listen to by myself in complete silence, and there're bands that I'd rather be surrounded by 1000s of people, just having a good (albeit completely ridiculous) time.
I'm anticipating the new CD, and I'm thinking it might be absolutely amazing--more pop-punk than pop, but hella singable/danceable/amazeable.
This summer could be amazing. Brand New, All Time Low, Blink. Man...
The strength of their lyrics is that they're easy to relate to. I agree with everything else though.

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
That's the problem with the internets, dude. The tubes are just full of this free stuff, and, then, next thing you know-- BAM!--you're listening to Tokio Hotel and Metro Station, crying yourself to sleep.

i find blatant attempts to be 'now' annoying in bands. case in point late of the pier. utter fucking shite band who are just jumping on the whole electro indie bullshit scene and i hate them all
so basically what annoys me most in songs is electro and indie
weownthestreets
02/24/09, 07:56 AM
Isn't that a bit too harsh, Paulb?
I can see the dislike of seeking novelty because it's hyped, but there are bands that do the electro/indie thing without being forgettable, even if you dislike the genre itself.
The funny thing with electro music is that it's so seldom that something comes around that actually really sticks. There are crazy-popular songs that cycle and fade away. Living in Montreal I really notice this; nothing stays 'cool' too long.
Still, there are CDs that I can't get enough of. Like, for example, Digitialism's Idealism. In the summer I can listen to that over and over and over.

I agree entirely. I think the lyrics on SWIR are good, and very honest. They might not have the emotional impact of, say, Lullabies (well, maybe Remembering Sunday has a bit of that.) But, yeah, they are easy to relate to, at least at this age, at least now.

In fact, I challenge anyone to find me a pop-punk song that doesn't use 'This is...' or 'tonight'. I would be blown away.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on motion city soundtrack lyrics. I just read through half a dozen or so of their songs (ie. the future freaks me out, my favorite accident, everything is alright, hold me down, fell in love without you, l.g. fuad) and other than an occasional 'for the night' and the obvious 'this is for real' (not my favorite song) they seem pretty clean.
I think fadeouts are fine, its a legitimate way to end a song as long as you arent using it on a regular basis. Same goes for any other song ending.
I had a music teacher tell me once that fadeouts were for people who didn't know how to write a real ending. Perhaps I agree to some extent, but in any case I thought it was funny.

Put it this way, the only time I have ever used a fadeout it was because I wanted to use a fadeout, not because I didn't know how to end it. There are lots of songs I love that have fadeouts that I couldnt image ending any other way - especially in songs that have this driving expansive feel (take be quiet and drive by the deftones as an example) because the fadeout gives the feeling that the song just keeps going which works.
And also, lets be honest, a lot of song endings out there arent very creative or awesome in some unique way. Most songs come to a calculated halt with all the instruments and vocals ending tight or letting the last note ring out, and neither of these take any more thinking or writing than fading out really.
and nothing against you, just how I feel.

I've never been a fan of Motion City Soundtrack (simply because I've never owned an album, or listened to much of their stuff), but Justin Pierre is a smart and funny guy; and I wouldn't expect much cheese in his lyrics.
As far as fadeouts go... I think it depends on the context and quality of the song. The Beatles and Beach Boys could fade out almost any song, just because of the way those songs were written. Songs like 'Paperback Writer' and 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' practically demand a fadeout. There's nothing else that can be done.
Now, imagine that 'How You Remind Me' by Nickelback ended with a fadeout, with the chorus repeating over and over. That's an example of how not to use a fadeout.
I think they're definitely appropriate in the right circumstances. We have a song that I believe is going to be an absolute exclusive any day now... Although it might be a different song, I'm not sure. But the end lyrics talk about 'fading away', as the song fades out. We wouldn't have done it if it didn't fit the context. And that's what's important.

Oh, and using overtly sexual lyrics in pop songs irks me for some reason sometimes. For example: "Warm Me Up" by the Audition is an awesome song.
However I heard a pop-ish song early that's lyrics were like "we're made for each other.. blah blah.." and the irksome: "we're gonna do it all night, yeah, do it all night" which just was kind of like a major WTF in the middle of the song.

Like Metro Station? They seem to do this a hell of a lot
eg: "Tonight we're falling in love. This feeling's turning me on."?
In heavy music where the band suddenly stops playing their instruments for a couple seconds so they can have some gang vocals going 'duh duh duh' to the tune of their chugg-ery.

4 minute songs that only really need to be 3 minutes
Vocals on duets that don't work
Vocalists who try and be someone they just aren't.
The Halifax full length fell victim to this.
I went back and quoted you because I LOVE 808s and feel that the album does what its supposed to perfectly. If you don't like it then listen to Graduation and pretend like Kanye never released it. He's gonna go back to rap don't worry.
I also can't stand forced gang vocals (The Maine's "Everything I Ask For").
Songs by bands who used to be pretty good (AAR and TAI come to mind) and ditch it to write a catchy song ("Gives you Hell" "About A girl").
Faded intros, best example I can give is We the Kings' "Check Yes Juliet"
I also can't stand when a band uses "different" intros to ALL of their songs on ONE album. It's okay to do it every now and then.

haha I think I am the same way. There are bands I hear today that make me think to myself "I would have liked them if I heard them in HS, but hearing them for the first time now at 24 I can't stand them"

exactly! i cant stand most these current 'pop punk' bands, when they clearly have no punk in them

I liked it when "pop-rock" and "powerpop" were used more. It fits those bands so much better than "pop-punk".

ahh yes, powerpop... i hate the shit out of that genre. i guess that this fits the thread - i hate anything having to do with the genre. i also hate it when a band you really like gets discovered by a shitty FM radio station and then all the 13 year old boys that wear chick jeans and eyeliner and all the girls that are pete wentz's "soulmate" hear it and think its the coolest thing. that, in turn, makes you hate the band and feel bad for listening to them even though they really didnt "sell out"
this has happened to me too many times

When a band names a lyric in the song, and then in parentheses something else from the song, just decide on one title!
Then everyone ends up calling it something different and it just gets confusing.

I get pissy when there's one part that's really good when the rest of the song is shit. Like, the intro... Or the bridge... Or even the fucking ending.
"Sidewinder" by A7X, anyone? Fucking seriously. That song is fucking shit up until the acoustic guitar part at the end, which deserved probably a song in itself instead of a however-long-shit-epic.
i hate the whinyness!! like in really emo bands... the way they sing hurts me ears!! :(
octave chords. for awhile i thought bands were incapable of writing a song without them.

Examples, mm? I've felt that way about a few... But for some reason, can't name 'em off the top of my head.

The end of that song is literally the only part of that album I even listen to anymore. Like, I skip forward just to that last minute or so.
-When a song starts off with the singer yelling "1! 2! 3! 4!"
-When the production is so rough that you can hardly hear the vocals (although this happens to some of my favorite bands)
-Whiny, high-pitched, nasal vocals
-Low pitched growling
-When the first riff sounds awesome, but it turns out it's the only riff in the song.
-Overproduction
-Generic, overused chord progressions
-When songs end by fading out. It's really unoriginal. The only song I like that does that is "Richmond Is A Hole" by Pg. 99.

I hate when I pick something in a song, that keeps repeating. And then I notice it every time. I don't hate it about the song, but I hate that I notice it. For instance, quite often on Nightmare of You's s/t, Brandon Reilly takes a deep breath before a lot of lyrics. I didn't notice it at first, but my girlfriend did, and then I couldn't stop hearing it hahaha.

hes an awful producer!
also, any kind of drop D tuning pop punk, a chord progression change of D to G annoys me also as its overused by pretty much everyone who likes my friends over you by new found, annnd gang vocals in the vein of hit the lights, four year strong, set your goals and other shit bands like that
Are you serious? he produced Pollyanna and Between The Heart And The Synapse

I wasn't talking about those chords specifically (although they ARE quite common...) I'm just talking about any annoying repetition of chords. I listen to a ton of pop/pop-punk music so I'm kind of being a hypocrite here, haha. But it does get old after a while.
Keep in mind there are only 7 notes.
