I'd say The Late Great Townes Van Zandt would be a good choice.

silver ships of andilar - amazing.
i can't stop listening to that song.
also, there's a really awesome video of townes playing with steve earle on his song "darling commit me"
i can't find it right now, but in the case that i recover the motivation, i will post it

his first 3 albums, awesome.
after that, not so much.
he's supposed to be releasing a townes van zandt tribute album at some point soon

No way, he got much better as his career progressed, save for the last few albums which were just decent.

I'm with Chris. Aside from his debut, Earle's peak was between Train a Comin' and Transcendental Blues.

Definitely. Train a Comin' might be my favorite album of his. I do love Copperhead Road though, even though there's some filler. But songs like the title track and "Johnny Come Lately" are classic.

Favorite is probably El Corazon for me. Emmylou again. :-)

Haha. She's got a great track record, that's for sure. El Corazon is a good one too.

guitar town, exit 0, copperhead road and train a comin were all good albums.
i just don't enjoy his later work.

Fair enough. The early albums aren't bad at all.

The only problem I have with Townes is that a few of his albums are ridiculously over-produced, particularly For The Sake Of The Song. He sounds so much better in a live setting with just his guitar and vocals.
That being said, he's one of my favorite songwriters. I love this scene (and song) from Heartworn Highways:

Everything from Our Mother The Mountain to The Late Great is stellar.

Dude is real good. I need to check him out more. Waitin' around to die has always been one of my favourites.
