five pillars of Islam
1. Believe that there is one true God (Allah) and that Mohammad (PBUH) is his messenger
2. Pray five times a day facing Mecca
3. Charity (Zakat)
4. Fasting from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan
5. Visit Mecca at least once if possible (thanks for fixing it)

well ya...things get a little more "strict"...shouldn't have sex, shouldn't gamble, shouldn't lie, steal etc. There's also a special prayer each night for 30 days. Ramadan is the month in which the Holy Koran was revealed to man so each night we pray and recite the passages from the Koran...some are longer than others etc but we eventually get through the whole thing by the end of the month.

I don't want this to sound shallow or anything, but I'm just curious... Is there a big celebration or something at the end or some sort of pay off for all the hard work through the month? It seems like a ton of work you guys have to do.

ya we can eat between sunset and sunrise but we're not supposed to eat a lot...A lot of people get around the fasting by eating double what they would during night and that's bad. There's always the restriction from eating pork and drinking alcohol but that's norm. We do eat some traditional foods...like the food they eat during Ramadan 1400 years ago...it's all good.

at the end of the month there's a big prayer...it's actually the prayer on the first day of the next month...you might know of it...it's called Eid ul-Fitr...and after that we're supposed to relax the rest of the day. A lot of people choose to stay at home, but others go and visit relatives etc. We do cook more extravagent kindsa foods I guess...but that's the extent to any celebration.
Not sure if they do this anymore but the Empire State building in NY would change it's colors to green and white on Eid ul-Fitr...neat stuff.

well there're different kindsa Muslims...Black Muslims who just wanna kill white people, Arab Muslims who wanna kill everyone, and south/southeast asian Muslims who really wanna avoid killing anyone but still get shit cause they're Muslim...I fall in the last category.
it's kinda fucked up. My grandfather was harrassed post-9/11 prior to a flight and it's just so messed up...I mean, the guy gets lost while taking a walk to the corner store, he's harmless...hopefully it'll pass within a decade or so.

you wake up before sunrise to have breakfast and declare your intention on fasting from sunrise to sunset in the name of Allah during the holy month of Ramadan. Then from sunrise to sunset you do not eat or drink. At sunset you sit together with your family and have essentially a small snack to break your fast and then you pray. Before breaking the fast you must again declare that you have fasted from sunrise to sunset in the name of Allah etc etc. Always drink water to break the fast. Then perform the Maghrib prayer (prayer after sunset) and then after that eat an actual meal with your family and rest/relax for the rest of the day. During the non fasting hours you should avoid strenuous activities, not eat a lot, pray, read from the Koran, and really try not to sin as this is the month where we can really releave ourselves from sin. That's pretty much it.

Bah, it's not a real fast if it's only during the day.
And, at least here, Eid is huge, not just some "prayer" thing.

ahahaha. Rashashashash.
I learned in one of my religion calsses that the entire religion of Islam was peaceful, except for the crazy fundamentalist fucks who most didn't actually consider true Muslims. There are really entire sects that kill everybody (not literally)?
