It's a very close race between "Eli, The Barrow Boy", "The Sporting Life", "The Engine Driver", and "The Mariner's Revenge Song". So yeah, I have a problem picking a favourite, but it is an excellent album (easily one of the best this year). Anyways, back to "The Sporting Life"... I think it is the most sublime expression of not being good enough ever recorded in song form, or at least near the top of the list.

That said, has anyone else here heard Picaresqueities, the bonus vinyl disc that came with Picaresque on vinyl? It's pretty sweet as well.

haha I fucking love this song

I fell on the playing field
The work of an errant heel
The din of the crowd and the loud commotion
Went deafening silence and stopped emotion

There's my coach he's looking down
The disappointment in his knitted brow
I should've known
He thinks again
I never should have put him in
He turns and loads the lemonade away

Honestly, the lyrics are just such an unusual description of a sporting event that it can only be described by brilliance. Especially the opening line, its what I wish I could write.

Is it the same songs that are on their Purevolume, because I enjoy those quite a bit.

I actually like "Everyhting I Try To Do, Nothing Seems To Turn Out Right" more, I believe from the Billy Liar EP, that may be my favorite Decemberists song ever. I have yet to find a song I don't like from them.

The Bagman's Gambit
On the lam from the law
on the steps of the capitol
you shot a plainclothes cop on the ten o'clock
and I saw momentarily
they flashed a photograph, it couldn't be you
you'd been abused so horribly
but you were there in some anonymous room
and I recall that fall
I was working for the government
and in a bathroom stall off the National Mall
how we kissed so sweetly
how could I refuse a favor or two
for a trist in the greenery
I gave you documents and microfilm, too

And from my ten floor tenement
where once our bodies lay
how I long to hear you say
no, they'll never catch me now
no, they'll never catch me
no, they cannot catch me now
we will escape somehow
somehow

It was late one night
I was awoken by the telephone
I heard a strangled cry on the end of the line
purloined in Petrograd
they were suspicious of where your loyalties lay
so I paid off a bureaucrat
to convince your captors they're to secret you away

And at the gate of the embassy
our hands met through the bars
as your whisper stilled my heart
no, they'll never catch me now
no, they'll never catch me
no, they cannot catch me now
we will escape somehow
somehow

And I dreamt one night
you were there in fours
head held high
in uniform

It was ten years on
when you resurfaced in a motorcar
with the wave of an arm
you were there and gone

I think this is one of the most fascinating and engrossing stories ever put to music. Just my opinion though.

I think the fact that I don't consider that the best song written by them is a testament to their talent. I mean, to me, that song is maybe 4th or 5th on the album, but it is an amazing song.

This is gonna be another week where the Decemberist take over my playlist.

That's probably my favorite song by them also.

I also adore On the Bus Mall, California One Youth and Beauty Brigade and I Was Meant For the Stage.

Seriously, there is nothing that should stop you from at least picking up Picaresque, then some of their earlier works.

You're awesome.

This album kicks more ass than Ultimate Warrior back in his heyday.
