do i need to keep listening or is this ep really as average as their full length? their demo's showed so much promise, but to me so far, they're the best songs by a ton.

The EP contains 2 of the demos, the full length contains the rest of them; you're argument doesn't really add up.

i'm aware captain...let me clarify for the jury...the demo songs remain the best songs they've done to me...everything they've written since has been far less in quality. i don't consider rerecording a demo that they released originally as an online EP a very large step forward when the new material around is lacking. add up?

and it wasn't really an argument...it was a question followed by an opinion.

Agree to disagree. I love this band.

so is it never gets easier just a rerecorded version of Costello?

i think so...it sounded familiar, i'm guessing that's what it is

This band doesn't really do anything for me, the music is done well enough, it just isn't very dynamic or interesting.

i think that's my problem with the newer stuff...i know john can write good music, it just seems like everything he's coming up with is lacking lately

there's something to me that doesn't make slr's music distinct, but i still love them all the same even though the whole ep ALMOST feels like filler songs.

Well the newer version of costello and a slow decent is fucking amazing. Hands in the sky was great. On their full length Sunrise Highway and Sympathy were fuckin amazing songs too. So I would have to disagree that the demo songs are not their good stuff only. The full length and new EP def has some worthy stuff on it.

i like them. loved the demos. liked the album quite a bit. thought the ep was okay.

i've just got to be in the mood for them.

I like SR alot, i liked the full length and the new ep, the new EP just bothers me. It seems like they put no work into it. I love hands in the sky, i think its really different from their other stuff, but i dont want this anymore is like ten words long, later that year has practically nothing behind it, either. Theres a bob dylan cover that they even took a few lines out of changed the words around a little, and they already had a slow descent. Sooo...considering how much it was, it was a little ridiculous.

Yeah, but at elast they got it out, so now they are done with victory I believe. So after their tour that can get a new label and start recording a new full length. Plus I was so excited to hear A Slow Decent, the new version is amazing. That would have & should have been on the full length. Also You forgot to mention Costello was also redone, but better.

I think they're aiming for a more musical sound. They're not exaclty scene music, they aren't falling into any of the phases or trends of the scene and they're just making music for music's sake. Track 1 and 6 on the EP are beautiful songs, but I find them boring becaue they're not what I normally want to listen to. Much of the full CD was like that too. They aren't making music for fans today to listen to 3 times and forget, they have a sound that you can play 50 years ago and it would have fit in, and I'm sure in 50 years it will still not be too far off.

This just makes me laugh.

Quit having such unreal expectations just because its John Nolan and just sit back and enjoy the great EP.

Call it what you want, but please dont try and over analyze and say that their demo's are the best thing yet. The demo's were that exactly, demo's. Their newer stuff is more polished, far more dynamic even though I read in here someone said it wasnt dynamic.

Quit expecting Straylight Run to be the second Taking Back Sunday, or one of the greatest indie rock bands in this era. Just listen to their great music and accept it for that, great music.

who said anyone wanted them to be taking back sunday? or even a great indie band? i just don't like their newer songs. i don't think they're catchy, i think the production is flawed, i think the harmonies are overdone in some places and not done enough in others. i just don't think it's the best they've done or will do. it's not really overanalyzing to say that i disagree that this is a great EP. i'm not knocking the band at all, they're super people.

You asked if you should keep listening to the EP and wondered if it was as average as their full length.

Average....no. Amazing....no. Good with its own sound, yes.

If you dont listen to the whole thing that means you will miss the Dylan cover, which would be a shame.

I would say they are amazing. Why can't they be amazing? I LOVED the EP. A betetr more complete and final version of A Slow Decent and Costello with much better production values is somehting I have been wanting since they were not included in the full length.

Not many people like I Don't Want This Anymore, I think it's pretty cool, since I can't cmopaire it to much else.

I think Hands in the sky is a great new song, I like the energy it emotes.

Later that year is pretty good, my least favorite on the album. It's a nice tune to have though, calming.

With god on our side is great. If it werent for the remake of a slow decent, this might have been my favorite song on the whole EP.

the guest singer is jeff darosa of the exit.

and straylight run really is an amazing live band. even if you've seen them once and said they were boring, maybe it was an off day or you weren't paying attention. seen them ten times, amazing EVERY time. and hands in the sky is a MILLION times better performed live.

Am the only one who wishes John would sing the chorus in Hands in the Sky at least once without the vocal effect? It sounds raw even with it, but without...damn, that would be awesome.

I get where you're coming from, but I don't think Hitler was brilliant. Charismatic and what the people of Germany were looking for? Yes, very much so. He had smart advisors, and he had a mind for exploiting weaknesses. But not brilliant. He made plenty of mistakes that normal generals/leaders could have seen as obvious. Though, that might just be Hindsight speaking. :)

The demos did have a certain passion and story behind them that some might feel lacks from this EP, particularly because now its polished and not raw. I personally think this band is pretty good, and this EP is still beautiful. I expect good music from Nolan due to the fact that this is what he's shown to be capable of, so far.

"Existentialism on Prom Night" is a great video.

This EP is some of my favorite stuff this year.

I LOVE every song on it, especially Later that Year(disagree with the politics and hope they don't do too much with that, but...) and every other song.

The RHYTHM and FLOW of the verses in Later that Year are just amazing.

In fact, I will safely say, this is my favorite EP this year.(From the kid who's obsessed with The Morning Of...)
