I just realized something....this country is so pumped with fear that all of the citizens are now fearless. This China being the future superpower and a potential cold-war II doesn't faze me at all. The Avian Flu (bird flu) is a potential catastrophic disaster, and IT doesn't faze me at all. So my question to all of you guys is....Is this country so pumped with fear by politicians and 24 hour news networks to where us citizens have built a tolerance? Or are these issues just simply nothing to worry about and they're just 2 more boogie-man stories by the media and government?
Duh. But trust me, more people are scared of this stuff than you think.

I've read some interesting stuff on how the media (by putting out what "sells" and keeping the citizens "warned") are only helping the administration get whatever they want. Not only that but the administration has a way of putting things that make everything seem so one-sided. This isn't new thoughl.
China is feared because of a lot of hype. It's not like they're going to wake up in the next month (or even six months) and say, "Hey guys! Superpower!" They're also not feared because of the American self-delusional concept, "We're better."
People just get spoon-fed. They need to do research.

If people were used to "fear," Bush wouldn't have been elected again, or you know, been supported in the first place.

I get fucking terrified every time I watch Unsolved Mysteries... I've watched it since I was eight and I used to get really scared hearing murderers were still free, and on the rare occasion that the story took place in Michigan, I would be trembling for hours. Yet, I still watched the show, because that was part of the amazement of it, a fucking tv show doing that to me. I still watch it to this day, and I get the exact same results inside.
So... I am American, and I am pumped full of fear.

When my mom was a kid, her next door neighbors' niece and nephew's mom was murdered by some guy. She was fresh off the bus stop from work and walking home..when some guy runs up behind her..grabs her and drags her in to the bushes. He killed her and cut out her..lower area I believe. Supposedly he had escaped from jail or something, and the people weren't even told. Really sad story though. :(

Avian flu is going to be a huge problem. I've been predicting China being the major world power ever since reading the booklet from Empire Earth (PC Game); all they have to do is finally realize how to fully utilize their abundant population.

What you're saying almost sounds like, in a twisted way, the fear instilled by the media has caused somewhat of a false sense of security in the American public. This is more or less true. Remember in the months following 9/11, there were countless news stories and reports about possible terrorist attack sites or anthrax warnings or bio-warfare plots, and the public bought it all. Everyone was really on edge. The American public was incredibly frightened. But now, 4 years later, it seems like the public has gotten used to these 'credible terrorist plot' and 'catastrophic edidemic' stories. I wouldn't say we're fearless, but we're definately not thinking about it as much anymore.

haha, i used to watch that show with my grandma.
but yeah... i know what commatosa is saying, i'm not afraid of a disease or flu or whatnot sweaping the country right now even if it would be horrible. i dunno why. But maybe thats not a bad thing. Like the Men In Black movie approach... if they can stop the flu and save the world without me knowing or worrying... cool?
